Story
HI - I'M MISTO! I am a young (about a year old) husky-shepherd mix rescued from a crowded California shelter not too long ago. I was terrified there -- I mean really scared. I wouldn't even come up to greet people. But after a few days out of there, my sunshine personality came out! I'm a loving, dog-friendly boy who would do well with another dog in the home, or as an only dog, too. I love to play and am happy! Change is a bit scary for me so I would do well with both a patient and active person, who could take me for walks, hikes and other outings. I have the most beautiful blue eyes, and I weigh about 50 lbs. Please email for an application! I currently need a foster or forever home.

Story
Meet Zephyr, the husky mix. Zephyr is an adolescent that is looking for an active guardian to meet his day to day needs mentally and physically. His previous guardian reported that he was friendly with strangers but can be exuberant when greeting. He loves to go for hikes and play tug of war. He lived with a dog-savvy cat in the previous home but would try to play with her. A home with a cat and a very slow, thoughtful introduction may be a fit but not all cats may tolerate Zephyr’s attempts at play. This smart cookie knows “sit”, “down” and “wait”. When meeting other dogs at the Shelter – Zephyr has been interested in interaction but can be a lot, slinking down low and then exploding with playful energy when greeting the dog. This may not be every dog’s play style but for a well matched dog – Zephyr would be a fun pup to be a dog’s companion. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Lewis, the husky Samoyed mix! Lewis came to the Shelter with his partner in crime Lavendar (who is also up for adoption). They were found by a good Samaritan in the roadway in the Santa Cruz Mountains. After their stray hold was complete and no individual came forward to reclaim them, they were evaluated for adoption. Although they came in together, Lavendar and Lewis are not required to be adopted together. But if someone is looking for a duo, they could be considered to go to a home together. Here`s what we have learned about Lewis – he is a social guy can be a little nervous at first but warms up. Lewis has been interested in interacting with primarily female dogs since his arrival at the Shelter, which may be hormonal at this time. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Lewis with children or cats. Story
MEET TENOR & BASS! This happy and loving duo has waited much too long for a home. They are a loving, fun pair of playful dogs who need a foster or forever home! They are very affectionate toward people, and love, love, love each other. They are likely brothers, who found themselves at a crowded California shelter with no adoption interest. Fortunately they were rescued but still haven't found a home yet. They must be adopted together as they are extremely bonded. Both are almost 7 years old. Bass, the brown-and-white pup, weighs only 55 lbs., and Tenor (tan and white) weighs about 60 lbs. They are fun, active pups who love to run, play and snuggle. They would love to be adopted by someone who could take them on hikes, walks and other outings. They currently play with each other for entertainment but it'd be great for them to branch out and see the world. Bass & Tenor love to jump up and give kisses. They are not super friendly with other dogs, so should be the only dogs in the home - but they have plenty of love to give and will be grateful to whomever adopts them. If you can foster or adopt Bass & Tenor, please email for an application.

Story
Meet Portia, the Belgian Malinois Siberian husky mix. Portia arrived to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know much about her life before the Shelter. After a day of decompression, she was relaxed and ready to interact with staff and volunteers. Staff have reported that she enjoys sniffing around the exercise yards and then checks in with her person and often getting excited. During her dog to dog interactions, Portia has had a spectrum of reactions – interested in sniffing and then playing with some while taking a bit more time to warm up to others. We suspect that Portia had some limited dog socialization experience prior to arrival at the Shelter so adopters should be patient with her as she settles into the home. High traffic areas like dog parks and beaches may not be good for Portia from the get go. She may enjoy a canine companion in the home provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Portia has enjoyed digging at the Shelter and finds it enriching. Adopters may want to consider a dig pit (like a big, deep sand box for dogs) to give her safe, appropriate outlet for that behavior. We do not have any history of Portia with cats or children. Oversized teddy bear seeks snuggle partner. Cuddly, smart, and eager to please, swipe right if you can handle this high energy heart with a soft side. Hatchi’s story is heartbreaking — he came into the shelter with his brother, but when their owner returned, they only took his brother… leaving Hatchi behind in a high-kill shelter. He soon found himself on the euthanasia list. Hatchi is now in a loving foster home and is looking for his forever home where he can feel safe, loved, and supported again. Hatchi does require eye drops daily for the remainder of his life. In our dream world, Hatchi would find a human that would help him feel confident and secure in a FINALLY stable environnment.

Story
Meet Nike, the Akita Siberian Husky mix. Nike arrived at the Shelter by no fault of her own – her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Nike has been described as energetic and friendly with people. She enjoys going for walks and runs. She’s lived with children ages 5, 8, and 9 years of age as well as teenagers and did well. She was crated when left alone for a few hours and was eager to reconnect with her family when they came home. Nike is a smart cookie and comes with a whole vocabulary of things she knows including: “sit”, “lay down”, “high five”, “shake”, “wait”, “slow down”, and “come here”. She would love to work her brain with her new family (and bond through positive reinforcement based training. Nike enjoys riding int eh car on her way to adventures. She can be selective in her dog friends (liking some but not others) so if there are any resident dogs in the home, it would be recommended they meet prior to adoption.
