Rescue Story
Hina was born to a rural outdoor dog. In April 2025, her owner contacted rescuers asking them to take the puppies born to the mother dog, and Hina was rescued along with her siblings. She spent approximately four months at a boarding facility before moving into a foster home in August.
Hina adapted to her foster home within about a week, but it took closer to a month for her to become fully comfortable with body handling and being approached or caught by people. Her journey has shown that while she may be shy at first, she is capable of building strong bonds once trust is established.
Social with People
Hina is a gentle and somewhat shy girl who takes a little time to warm up to new people. She will readily accept treats from strangers and will even work up the courage to approach for treats herself. Physical affection takes longer—she generally prefers to get to know someone before allowing petting and handling, but she can become comfortable within about a week.
She has met children under 13 and was willing to take treats from them, though she did not actively approach them on her own.
Hina can be picked up by placing an arm under her belly, but she does not particularly enjoy being carried and dislikes being grabbed unexpectedly. Because she is naturally sensitive and somewhat timid, sudden noises or startling situations may cause her to retreat and seek a safe place. For this reason, she would do best with a calm, patient family that can help her continue building confidence at her own pace.
Once she trusts you, Hina becomes incredibly affectionate. She enjoys being petted, leans into her people, rubs against them, and happily seeks attention.
Social with Other Dogs
Hina generally gets along well with dogs that are similar in size, smaller than her, gentle, or socially appropriate. She tends to avoid large dogs that are overly enthusiastic or pushy when trying to initiate play.
When meeting new dogs, she is polite and typically limits interactions to sniffing and greetings. Once friendships develop, however, she becomes playful and enjoys interacting with her canine companions.
Cats
Hina lived with a cat in the same home for approximately three months. When she sees cats during walks, she may watch them with curiosity, but she follows her handler’s guidance and moves on without issue.
Energy Level
Hina has a moderate energy level. She enjoys outdoor activities and walks but settles down nicely and relaxes once her exercise needs have been met.
Walking
Hina is an experienced walker who follows her handler well and does not pull on leash. She enjoys exploring the outdoors while remaining attentive to her person.
Additional Information
Hina does not guard food from people. However, because she enjoys food, she may occasionally growl if another dog approaches her while she is eating. When treats are distributed by people, she patiently waits her turn and takes them politely.
She is generally a very quiet dog and rarely barks. Occasionally, she may give a few hesitant alert barks when encountering unfamiliar people.
One important thing to know about Hina is that she has historically shown anxiety whenever she transitions to a new environment. During her early days in foster care, she chewed on door frames while trying to get outside. When she later moved to a training facility, she initially attempted to climb out of her kennel and repeatedly scratched at doors in an effort to leave unfamiliar spaces.
Because of this, Hina’s adopter should plan to spend significant time helping her settle into her new home. It is important not to leave her alone immediately after adoption and instead focus on building trust, establishing routines, and helping her feel secure. Enrichment activities such as nose work, food puzzles, and interactive games can greatly support her adjustment and confidence.
Hina travels exceptionally well. She is calm in a crate, knows how to jump into and out of a vehicle on her own, and rides comfortably. While she currently prefers to eliminate outdoors, she has successfully used pee pads indoors when walks were not possible.
Ideal Home
Hina would thrive in a patient, understanding home that appreciates the rewarding process of helping a shy dog blossom. She may not be the dog who immediately jumps into a stranger’s lap, but for the person willing to earn her trust, she becomes a deeply affectionate and loyal companion.
