Story
Bluto is a confident, playful and affectionate boy with a heart as big as his 70-pound, all-muscle frame! He’s house trained and knows how to sit, and while he walks pretty well on leash, his fabulous foster is working with him on not pulling when something exciting grabs his attention. Bluto is a total lovebug adores being around people. He would happily cuddle up with you on the couch any chance he gets. He’s gentle when taking treats and doesn’t mind having his paws handled—making grooming and vet visits a breeze. He loves meeting new people and greets guests in the home with full body wiggles. So far in foster, he has done great with other large dogs who have calm demeanors. When playful dogs approach, he's eager to get involved but he's not quite sure exactly what to do. He takes human or dog direction well though, and will be a playful companion in no time! As he's a large boy who's still learning how to keep all four paws on the ground when he's excited, he would be best in a home with adults only or older kids. He means absolutely no harm, but could easily knock over small kids or anyone unsteady on their feet while he's working on this. If you’re looking for a strong, confident, and affectionate companion who just needs a little polishing, Bluto might be your perfect match, apply today to find out!

Story
Meet Bane, a big-hearted boy with an equally big presence. With his smooshy face, stunning grey coat, and sweet demeanor, Bane is well on his way to becoming the perfect companion. He’s friendly, playful, and has a lovable personality that wins over everyone he meets. Bane walks politely on leash most of the time and is very responsive to treats and attention (two of his favorite things!). This gentle giant appears to be housetrained and thrives on affection, soaking up every bit of love you give. He will need a family who can support him on his journey to a healthier weight with regular walks, balanced nutrition, and continued positive reinforcement. Bane is a lovable, loyal dog who’s ready to bring joy, cuddles, and lots of tail wags into a home that’s ready for a little extra dog to love.

Story
It’s been months and no applications completed for this sweet guy. It makes me sad that he’s dying of loneliness in our backyard when I know the right owner would have a ball with this boy! We got Dutch from a foster home a few years ago and our family has grown, and moved, and grown, and moved. We love Dutch but he’s not getting the care and attention he deserves, we leave all day for work and then immediately have sports in the evenings which means Dutch is outside alone all day by himself. he’s very social and sweet and loves walks. His hips have been achy lately but he still loves to play and walk. He’s a big guy but doesn’t jump up or act overly rambunctious! Great teeth and coat! He hardly barks, unless someone unfamiliar is approaching the house so he’s great as a guard dog, but he might just lick them to death if they get too close! He’s very friendly with people and knows how to be gentle with food and toys. He does like to power chew so he needs heavy duty toys!

I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereMotown is a 1-year-old, 69-pound mastiff mix, equal parts guardian, goofball, and gentle giant. With a natural protective streak, he adores his people and keeps a watchful eye over the home. While he may vocalize a bit, he greets new friends warmly after a proper introduction. Continuing his training with a guardian breed specialist would be a fantastic way to help him reach his full potential. In his foster home, Motown has been a total gem with both a dog and a cat. He’s playful with gentle canine pals and respectful with feline friends. He’d thrive as a solo dog with regular playdates or in a home with a well-matched, easygoing companion. Motown is a smart, food-motivated pup. He already knows several commands, including Watch Out, Wait, Leave It, Drop It, Knock It Off, and Sit. He walks beautifully on a short leash and is currently working on curbing his prey drive toward squirrels. He’s learning to ignore non-food items with great success using positive reinforcement. With a structured routine, he’s making excellent progress with potty training and learning to be okay when left alone for short stretches. If you're looking for a loyal and affectionate companion, Motown might just be your match! Click here to learn how to adopt and submit your adoption questionnaire.June 10, 2025, 2:36 pm

Story
I am at Oakland Animal Services in kennel Dog H:7Croissant's story begins on the side of a busy freeway, overheated and shut down, where highway patrol officers found her lying motionless in the sun. At the shelter, it was clear that she's not just physically exhausted—she's emotionally overwhelmed, too. Croissant is gentle soul navigating the world with quiet hesitation. She startles easily, balks at doorways, and often tucks herself away in her kennel, unsure of what's next. And yet, there are glimpses of hope. She'll rest her head softly in your hand. She'll lean in for chin rubs. She'll take a few hesitant steps closer when you speak to her kindly. Around 6 years old and 94 pounds, Croissant walks beautifully on leash, seeks out calm companionship in playgroups, and shows signs of deep affection when she feels safe. She's not ready to be the life of the party—but in a peaceful home with patient people, she could finally exhale and begin to heal. Quick Facts: • Timid but non-reactive and gentle • Walks calmly on leash but startles easily and needs a steady pace • Enjoys calm dog company and slow, quiet outings • Looking for a quiet, loving home with patience and compassion Croissant has lived through something we may never fully understand—but she's here, trying her best. All she needs now is someone willing to meet her where she is, and love her as she is.         View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Oakland Zoo (@oaklandzoo)  June 5, 2025, 9:53 am
