EXTRA, EXTRA — READ ALL ABOUT IT!PAPER BOY IS READY FOR DELIVERY!  Meet Paper Boy, the 18lb, 7yearold Mini Schnauzer who has never delivered a newspaper in his life — unless you count delivering joy, naps, and light snoring. He’s got that “distinguished older man with opinions about the thermostat” energy, and honestly… it works for him. Personality SnapshotLazy — he believes steps are optional.Easy — the kind of dog who makes you say, “Is he… always this chill?”Clean — tidy beard, tidy soul.Great on a leash — walks like he’s headed to pick up his dry cleaning.Good with dogs — nods politely like a neighbor taking out the trash.Good with cats — respects their boundaries and their superiority. Paper Boy is fully vetted, neutered, microchipped, and ready to retire from his imaginary paper route and settle into a life of snacks, soft blankets, and mild gossip. WISE is entirely volunteer-run and all of the donations made to our rescue go directly back to the animals in our care. By partnering with veterinary practices that support our work, we are able to save animals lives and restore them back to health. While some animals only need standard care, others require more extensive veterinary or behavioral care. Regardless of which dog you are applying for, we are looking for adopters to support our program with a minimum donation of $850. The donation may or may not be directly applied to care of the dog you're adopting but rather goes toward supporting all of the dogs in the rescue. We appreciate the understanding of our potential adopters. Please keep this in mind prior to applying.NAME: ShowgirlBREED: Mini SchnauzerDOB: Oct 2, 2018 (7 years 3 months)Home Recommendation: Showgirl would do best in a calm, quiet, adult-only home. She thrives with routine, patience, and gentle handling, and would benefit greatly from having another calm, confident dog in the home to help her feel secure. Why did they come to WISE: Showgirl spent her entire life as a breeding dog in a puppy mill. When her 'breeders' decided they no longer had a use for her, they planned to discard her. Thankfully, WISE was able to step in and rescue her giving her a second chance to experience the love and warmth of a real home. Now shes ready to start that new chapter!Personality:Showgirl is incredibly sweet, gentle, and affectionate once she feels safe. She adores being close to her trusted person and will happily curl up beside you or climb into your lap for snuggles. She is mellow and happiest simply being in your company. During the day, she enjoys relaxing in her own dog bed and is comfortable when left alone.KIDS:Showgirl is good with children, but the noise and activity of a busy household can be stressful for her. An adult-only home is strongly preferred.DOGS: Yes! Showgirl loves other dogs and gains confidence from them. A calm canine companion would be ideal.CATS: YesTraining:Showgirl is fully house-trained and does very well with a consistent routine. She reliably goes to the bathroom in the backyard and follows a predictable daily schedule. She sleeps in bed with her person at night. She is shy at first and can be easily overwhelmed by noise, movement, or unfamiliar people, but with patience, she settles and shows her loving side. She has been working on leash walking and has made great progress, particularly in quiet areas like parks.Visit WiseAnimalRescue.org to fill out an adoption application. All potential adopters are required to come to New Jersey for to meet and take home WISE's dogs.

Good with dogs,
Story
Meet Millie! Same old story different dogs… people buy a cute fluffy non-shedding puppy, never get them groomed or socialized, and surrender them to the pound when they are a matted inconvenience 🤷‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️ Millie is under a year old and a nervous girl but opens up into a happy playful puppy once she feels safe. She seems to be some kind of schnoodle or maybe havapoo? (Well, we groom everything to look like a schnauzer, but that definitely looks like a schnauzer nose to us!) About 16lbs full grown and is now spayed and updated on shots. Shaving her was a dramatic occurrence and she will need sleepy time meds and getting her more used to being brushed and handled now that she’s more comfortable and not clumped in mats head to toe. She’s ok with other dogs but also gets nervous with them in her space too much and prefers to dine alone… a bit socially awkward and still learning how to play and be a normal puppy. Millie is looking for an adult home that will continue to socialize her in a positive way to new people, places, and things and be committed to her for life, for better or worse. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Millie in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
We love a schnauzer, and we love a challenge, so Hunter is lucky he ended up with us! If he had gone to the city shelter as planned, things definitely would not have gone well for him 😞 This 7 year old has been quite a project and we have been working with him behind the scenes for the past few weeks as we try to figure each other out. He came to us a matted terrified screaming snapping mess from a home in the Bronx. They took him in when he was left abandoned tied to a pole a couple years ago but couldn’t really take care of him either. He shut down and starved himself for several days before finally taking some chicken from us- we can usually make friends with even the most aggressive and feral schnauzers pretty quickly but he has been most challenging by far that we have ever had. We had to have him completely sedated to be shaved and he wouldn’t let us pet him for weeks, but he finally is starting to trust and give us a happy greeting and letting us pet his head and shaved-off whiskers. His saving grace is that he’s more comfortable with dogs than people and has even started playing and flirting with them, so he’s finally learning we aren’t so scary if the other dogs like us. He’s gentle and sweet with dogs of all sizes so we know despite the fierce show he puts on toward people, deep down he’s not a bad guy, just terrified and has been let down by humans over and over again. We still can’t pick him up and petting has to be on his terms, and he panics about leashes/collars going over his head but we will continue to go at his pace and on his terms. He is still very much a work in progress but we see a lot of potential in him and he’s much more relaxed and happy around the other dogs at least so we will continue to give him time to figure out his place in the world. If you also love a project schnauzer, have a friendly dog or pack of dogs, and would be interested in giving him unconditional love (at a distance to start), respect, and understanding for life, please reach out to us at njwoof@cs.com. Until then he will remain in foster with us in Northern NJ as we continue to work to earn his trust and we will continue to post updates on this scared little boy 💜 When you support our rescue, in addition to helping the many sweet adoption-ready dogs we take in get vet care to prepare them for homes, you also help us give the gift of time, space, and acceptance to some of the most traumatized little dogs like Hunter. Dogs who have been disappointed, abused, neglected, or misunderstood and aren’t quite ready for society, but are just as deserving of a second chance Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls.
