Meet Rocco! This special complicated little guy is about 4 years old, less than 15lbs and some type of floofy terrier/poodle type mix we are guessing. He may bark and put on a tough act when meeting new people, but is lovable and happy once he bonds and loves walks and car rides with his favorite staff. He prefers to dine alone and is looking for a calm adult home with people who will give him his space and let him come over for attention on his terms. He was never socialized with other dogs either and will loudly try to scare them away first before they can scare him. Medically, he's also a complicated little dude. His owners never brought him to a vet, even when he had a severe back injury and was temporarily paralyzed. Luckily with rest he was able to mostly recover on his own from a suspected disc injury, but is still a bit ataxic and wobbly in his hind legs. He does best walking on grass and softer surfaces with traction, and shouldn't be allowed to jump on and off furniture or do stairs as there is more of a change of re-injuring his back. He's had some GI issues on and off as well and was diagnosed with IBD after an endoscopy and GI biopsies: he's doing much better on a strict prescription diet and medications now and is well-managed We know this guy isn't an easy sell... he's not perfect, but the bond that comes with taking the time to get to know and love quirky little dogs like him is extra meaningful. We have been on a very expensive wild spending spree at the vet this week with lots of new medically-challenged emergency intakes 🤯. Things are bad right now in the shelter/rescue world. Really bad. None of us are ok 😔 We are still catching up on getting to know all our new little friends- some young, many seniors, some likely hospice cases. But all deserving of a fresh start. First up, meet Maya! Her owners were moving that day (of course) and showed up at the pound with this skinny matted blind 10 year old ragamuffin they said was a purebred poodle. She had not been to a vet in a while and was eating well but not gaining weight… her bloodwork and urine test showed she is diabetic! So we are grateful she was surrendered just in time before crashing without treatment. She’s a sweetheart, loves attention and cries to be picked up and put on your bed. A very good girl for her twice daily insulin injections with her meals, goes to the bathroom outside when taken out in time, and is fine with other gentle dogs who won’t get mad if she accidentally bumps into them. She has a libre sensor and we are working on getting her stabilized and regulated and will soon be looking for a permanent home committed to her ongoing care- she is otherwise pretty healthy and happy and hopefully will have many years to be loved and spoiled.
