Take Barney outside and his nose is on the ground before his feet are, and he will work his way across every patch of grass and pavement you give him like each one has news in it. Barney is a three year old male hound mix, around 35 pounds, and our best guess is beagle and Plott hound. He has a brindle face with a white blaze down the middle, long soft ears, a dark saddle across his back, a white chest, and four white socks. He is slim and a little long legged for his size, built like a dog who was made to follow his nose. He came to Petersburg Animal Care and Control as a stray. When the sniffing is done, he sits, looks up at whoever is holding the leash, and waits to see what you have in mind. He leans into a hand that scratches his neck and is happy to stay there. He is a sweet, easy dog to be around, and he is very treat motivated, which gives you a simple way into teaching him anything you want him to learn. Barney gets along with other dogs, and so far he has seemed fine around cats too, so a home with a friendly resident dog or a cat is a real option for him. A family who likes long walks and does not mind stopping every few feet will make his whole day. A few honest things before you apply. We have not seen Barney around children, so we cannot tell you how he would do living with them. We are glad to set up an introduction with any dog already in your home. We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Story
Maggie will cross the room for kisses and then put both front paws around whoever she has decided is hers, which is a lot of dog to be hugged by and very hard to turn down. She is a five year old Plott Hound mix, about 55 pounds, and she has been in foster care since October of 2025. The dog in that house now is not the dog who arrived. She has grown cuddly and confident, she is house trained, crate trained and spayed, and she settles into a household routine on her own. She is good with children. Maggie has spent that year working. She graduated a beginner obedience class with high praise from her trainer and she is enrolled now in an advanced program with additional classes and private sessions. She knows how to be told things and she likes it. The rest of her day is sunshine, birds and the yard. In a secure area she gets off leash time and comes back to the door on her own when she is ready to come in. She will chase a stick as long as you are willing to throw it, and then she will come lie down inside and let you get on with your evening. A few honest things before you apply. Maggie needs a fenced yard, and that one is not negotiable. She is also strong on leash, strong enough that her foster still works at holding her after a year of daily walks and training, so she needs an adopter with the physical ability to manage her and the willingness to keep that training going. Her prey drive rules out homes with cats or small animals. She can be reactive to some small dogs and will need slow, thoughtful introductions to any dog already in the home. Story
Chloe has been in our life now since 2021 during movie. SHe was born in February 2021. We are unfortunately moving to my in-laws home and there is no where for Chloe to go. She is a loving playful dog and is very smart and alert. She loves children and she loves to go on walks, she is a peaceful dog and I love her so much. I want the best for her so I am willing to let her go to someone who loves dogs.

Pumpkin Spice spends her walks checking in. Every few steps she stops, tips her head back, and grins up at whoever is holding the leash, like she wants to make sure you are having as good a time as she is. She is a seven year old mix, and our best guess is some Chesapeake Bay Retriever and some Plott Hound. She has a red brindle coat, a white chest and white toes, and a face that has gone silver around the eyes and muzzle. She came into the shelter on October 8. Pumpkin Spice is built like an athlete and moves like one, so she wants a person who likes to get out and walk. Give her a good one and she comes home, settles in, and leans over for a cuddle. She has gotten along with other dogs when the introduction was done properly, so a home with a dog already in it is an option for her. A few honest things before you apply. Pumpkin Spice can clear a four foot fence, so we would like to see her go to a home with a secure, taller fence around the yard. Any dog introductions should be done slowly. We have not seen her with cats or children, so we cannot tell you how she would do living with either. We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you.
