Story
Meet Dean!  Dean is a 1-year-old Pointer/hound mix with a huge personality and an even bigger heart. He’s very much still a puppy at heart — energetic, curious, and always ready for his next adventure. Dean is currently working on basic manners like sit and “nice,” and he’s learning quickly with treats and consistency. One of Dean’s absolute favorite things in the world is cuddling. If you’re hoping for personal space during movie night… Dean may not be your guy. He will happily climb into your lap, shower you with kisses, and then flop over for belly rubs, channeling some serious Puss in Boots puppy-eyes energy. When he’s done loving on you, he’ll settle in close by — or sprawl out dramatically on the couch or bed. A tidy house and supervision will help set Dean up for success since anything left within reach is fair game.  Dean loves other dogs and enjoys playing and cuddling with them. If one dog goes on an adventure, Dean will happily tag along — and come back together. Cats are still a question mark; he wants to play, but may be a bit much for cats who prefer lounging and being admired from a distance. Dean would thrive in an active home that can provide exercise, structure, training, and lots of affection. In return, you’ll get a hilarious, loving, loyal companion who believes there’s no such thing as too much togetherness. If you’re looking for a playful, affectionate, and endlessly entertaining pup who will keep you laughing and loved, Dean may be your perfect match   If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will send to the foster family to set up a meet! The adoption fee of $250 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm and any other necessary medical treatment to assure a healthy new pup for your family. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Although we do our best to describe breed, since our pups all come from shelters we can not and will not make any guarantee on breed or size. We can tell you that they are 100% RESCUED! And that is the BEST breed! *please note that we are a foster home based rescue and we do home visits as part of the adoption process - we are unable to adopt to families who live outside of the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Story
Click here for Elvis's Facebook Album April 2026: Well it's been a year since I posted an update on precious Bubba (formerly Elvis) but I am happy to report that he is now heartworm negative and doing GREAT!! He is the happiest Pointer and loving life in foster care. Unfortunately he does have an incontinence problem perhaps due to his neuter and tumor surgery last year. Kinda of a bummer, but I just put a belly band around him indoors as he does love to snuggle on the couch. Bubba is the epitome of what we love in our English Pointers- loving, silly, goofy, playful and just a joy to be around. I did DNA test him and Wisdom Panel thought he was more German Shorthaired Pointer, but we suspect that they don't have a lot of field bred Pointer DNA in their program as he really looks more like a field bred "English" Pointer. He is also calmer than a typical GSP and doesn't need to play fetch constantly. He does like pulling toys out of the kiddie poop however. Bubba is a super special dog and he will need a super special adopter. March 18 2025: Elvis' dental and neuter are done. He did well, lost 4 teeth and we are doing a biopsy on his potential scrotal tumor. What a sweet boy, that just needed some TLC. With heartworm slow kill, we'll test at 8 months and see where he is at, hopefully he'll be negative by then, but oftentimes it takes longer. We are taking our time with him especially since he is also infected with Ehrlichia, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Glad he came to IBR otherwise that would have been missed. We are looking for a foster or foster to adopt home for him in the Chicago area with a safe fenced in yard. Heartworm slow kill treatment is super easy and so much easier on the dogs we rescue. Our adoption or foster app can be found at www.helpibr.org March 2025: Elvis was left outside the city jail in a cage in Tompkinsville, KY a few weeks ago. The jail is sometimes used as the local humane society. He was in terrible shape, extremely thin and frightened. We worked for a few weeks to line up transport and in that time it was discovered that Elvis was infected with heartworms and he had a sore on his testicles. The great folks in Kentucky got his vaccinations done and also got him started on heartworm slow kill. In between some nasty weather, and some plane electrical problems, Elvis was driven to Louisville, KY and then flown to the Chicago suburbs by Captain David Tan. His latest exam and bloodwork shows that Elvis is also fighting 3 tick borne diseases- Ehrlichia, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. We got a closer look at his teeth- which were in terrible shape and Elvis also has an enlarged testicle besides a cyst. This poor dog has suffered some terrible neglect but while we are in the search for a longer term foster, he is being cared for and loved on by our good friends at Tail Gate for Dogs in Elmhurst. As Dr. Rimkunas didn't rule out testicular cancer, I have his neuter and dental set up for March 18th and we could really use some donations to help with his ongoing medical care. We have Paypal at www.illinoisbirddogrescue.org, VENMO with @illinoisbirddogrescue and ZELLE with info@illinoisbirddogrescue.org If you would like to help, please click HERE to submit a foster to adopt home application. Story
Daisy is a Pointer (English) and not a German Shorthaired Pointer-- they are similar but different. I add GSP to give our Pointers a little more exposure. Click here for Daisy's Facebook Album October 2025: How about a much needed update on sweet Daisy. She is my PRIDE and JOY and while she is not available for adoption currently because of her health, It's been journey to help her recover from some serious health issues. Back in February, we knew she had heartworms, but when she moved to Illinois for foster care in April because she was struggling, we also found Rocky Mountain spotted fever and a horrendous fungal infection-- Blastomycosis. As the Founder and President of Illinois Birddog Rescue- I took over her care and she had made some huge progress although she has a long way to go. Daisy is a complete joy, with the English Pointer- happy-go-lucky silly disposition we have adored for over 20 years. She is starting to play with other dogs and she loves to run in the yard. I can only hope that what we learn from helping her recover will help other dogs with similar serious health complications. We are all in at IBR HQ with TEAM DAISY. March 2025: Daisy moved to temporary foster care in St. Louis until we can line up a longer term foster or foster to adopt in the Chicago area to help continue her heartworm slow-kill treatment. Here's an update from her foster mom Kathleen, "Daisy is timid and needs to be given 'permission' or needs to be encouraged to leave her chosen safe spots. In our house, those are the bed that came with her, and our couch. I would guess she was taught to 'stay' or 'place' with unpleasant consequences for leaving without permission. Because of that, she is less curious than other dogs we have had - hopefully that will change as she learns she is safe. Daisy is housebroken as long as you pick up on her cues. She is learning the dog door. It was so cold the week after she arrived, that we didn't spend a lot of time on that training. Now that it's warmer and the door is open more, I expect she'll figure it out within the week. Daisy walks with a delightful prance and takes treats super gently. She is sweet and undemanding, only occasionally reaching out gently with her paw to ask for petting if you're sitting next to her on the couch. She has shown no interest in our cats, and gets along well with our dogs. So far, she has not been especially playful with them, but she will happily sleep touching them on the couch or on a dog bed. Her previous foster reported she was also safe around human toddlers. Daisy seems to be interested in chewing on bones and likes to play tug. She has not been interested in fetching toys. Daisy is underweight and surprisingly a bit of a diva about eating, only consuming dry kibble if it's mixed with canned dog food. She will wake from a sound sleep if there's a smell of tasty human food in the house, though - and she's happy to eat that if you're willing to share it with you. (Or if you leave it unattended where she can reach it - working on that now!)" She sure sounds like an easy project. If you are in the Chicago area, have a safe fenced in yard and lots of love to give while giving our new girl extra cuddles, please consider fostering our sweet Daisy. Our application can be found at www.helpibr.org January 2025: Daisy is our newest little Pointer rescue from Tennessee. She was pulled from an overcrowded shelter and is currently in our heartworm slow-kill program. While in her foster home in Tennessee, she is learning what it's like to live indoors, to lay on furniture and to just feel safe. We don't know what her life was like before she came into our program, but we know she was not treated kindly, but she is getting braver and more affectionate everyday. We are looking for a foster to adopt family in the Chicago area with other confident dogs she can feel safe with. The foster must have a safe fenced in yard. The rescue covers all slow-kill supplies. We'll need to get her to our vet for her bloodwork and in a few months we'll schedule her spay and microchip. Story
Meet Dottie! If you're looking for a loyal, easygoing companion with the perfect balance of independence and affection, Dottie may be your dream dog! Dottie is a beautiful black-and-white mixed-breed girl, estimated to be between 2 and 5 years old. She has fully embraced the good life beyond puppyhood and is happiest spending her days lounging around the house, soaking up sunshine, and keeping her people company. This sweet girl is incredibly well-mannered. She is house trained, non-destructive, and trustworthy when left home alone. Whether she's relaxing on one of her favorite beds, watching you cook in the kitchen, or curled up on the couch beside you, Dottie is content simply being near her family. At night, she happily sleeps in bed with her foster and stays there all night long. Dottie currently lives with young children and a cat and has been wonderful with both. She is gentle, calm, and incredibly patient with kids, and she couldn't care less about the family cat. She also enjoys meeting new people and greets both familiar faces and strangers with a friendly attitude. One of Dottie's most adorable quirks is her famous "smile." When she's excited to see you, she'll flash a big grin and bounce into the air with happiness! It's impossible not to smile back. While Dottie enjoys exploring and sniffing around outside, she's not a high-energy dog who needs constant activity. A fenced yard where she can wander, sunbathe, and investigate interesting smells would be ideal. She also enjoys playing with her toys indoors and joining the kids outside while they play before settling down in a sunny spot to relax. Dottie knows her crate and does well during the day if needed, but she's also proven herself trustworthy with free rein of the house. She's currently working on learning "sit" and continues to impress her foster family with how adaptable and eager to please she is. Her foster describes her as "very lovable, calm, extremely gentle, and a GREAT dog." The thing they'll miss most? Her loving, chill personality and the joy she brings simply by being around. If you're searching for a sweet, low-maintenance best friend who will make you feel loved every day, Dottie is ready to steal your heart. The adoption fee for Dottie is $400. This donation helps to cover veterinary expenses including spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinations. Wish Upon a Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit, foster based animal rescue. If you would like to meet Dottie please complete our adoption questionnaire at www.wishuponarescue.org/adopt. We will review your responses and be in contact to schedule a meet and greet at a time and place convenient for your family and our team member.
