Story
Meet Aretha! I’m a very sweet 6-year-old Puggle/Chihuahua gal with a beautiful face that puts a smile on your face , and I have soft black-and-tan coat. At just 18 pounds, I’m the perfect size—small enough to snuggle but cute enough to strut with style! I’m thriving in a loving foster home and enjoy spending time with my foster siblings, but I’d be just as happy as your one-and-only, soaking up all your attention. I walk nicely on a leash and love going out in the city to say hello to everyone I meet. I’ve been fully vetted, spayed, and am up to date on all my vaccinations. All I need now is a forever home where I can keep blossoming and share all the love I have to give. If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle companion who’s ready to love and be loved, I might just be your girl. Apply to adopt me here: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/POSH/Dog

She is a happy, playful, beautiful girl who loves to nap with her humans and watch TV, a true couch potato. Valentina, 1.5 years old and 38lb, is looking for a calm, understanding home that will allow her to come out of her shell at her own pace. She does best with routine and consistency. With a patient and loving family by her side, she will continue to grow into the confident, joyful dog she is meant to be. Apply at Barrkli.org to adopt Valentina.  ##2302222##

Story
Ted - 6 years, 18lbs, Pug/Chi Mix, Neutered  This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Our Team Says: "Ted is a very special boy with Pulmonary Hypertension  - please read below for more info"  Their Foster Parent Says: "Ted is a very sweet and very shy boy, but he is getting braver and opening up more and more every day. He does great in all kinds of public situations and will accompany you on your walk to the coffee shop or to a fun weekend brunch spot, where he expects at least 4 french fries. He is very treat-motivated but is polite with his meals and likes to graze throughout the day. Napping on the sofa or at your feet while you work is his main daytime activity. He also loves chewing on his stick and gazing out the window. He is very curious about what the people are up to and will follow to observe you (just in case you're getting a treat). Ted would love a backyard that he can freely explore and hang out in when the weather is nice, but he also loves wandering around the city, so it's not a must. Ted is very patient and doesn't mind when you leave; he will curl up and snooze or stare out the window while you're away. He is still very shy with other dogs in public but seems to open up and like them when they are in the apartment, so a companion for him would be nice! He is still very nervous when being picked up in public, so it's best to travel with a carrier if going on the subway. He will require meds 3x a day for his heart but usually eats it with no complaints with a pill pocket or piece of Parmesan. Ted is such a sweetheart, and his quirks are to be expected for a dog that has never lived in a home, but he is adapting very quickly and would make an excellent companion for someone living a slower pace of life." Level of dog ownership experience needed:BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.  MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60  minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Potty trained?Probably! Adults usually are, but all will have transitional accidents for the first week or so. A consistent walking route and schedule plus finding spots with grass or dirt can help. Social with other dogs?Yes, but we don’t know to what degree yet. Some like to wrestle with every passing pup, others can coexist well but prefer to keep to themselves. We’ll learn more soon. Social with cats? Not sure yet! Some breed mixes that are generally NOT great matches for homes with cats include large hounds, huskies, and shepherds.  Comfortable with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)We’re not sure yet, but we try to err on the side of caution. Respectful kids ages 8 and up are probably a safe bet. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.  Okay in the city?We don’t know yet. Most adult dogs do well in the city after they’ve had time to adjust to a new environment, but some never adapt and need homes in the burbs.  Medical statusHe was HW positive when he was rescued in PR. He was treated for it and then he came to us.   A few months after his arrival he was hospitalized for having a hard time breathing. He landed with the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension - mostly likely a side effect of being treated for heartworm and having had heartworm for a long time. This condition requires daily medications and monitoring. At the end of October he went for a check up and an echo. The good news is his heart hasn't gotten worse but it hasn't gotten better - it's the same as it was when he was hospitalized. At this time he was also due for a HW test and unfortunately it was still positive - which mostly speaks to the fact he had a really bad infection for a long time. In the new year he'll be undergoing HW treatment again - the vet thinks it's the right thing to do as it should help take some pressure off of his heart. Neutered, UTD on vaccines.  How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. Story
Loki - 3 years, 18lbs, Puggle, Neutered  This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org His Foster says: Loki is sweeter than honey with the gentlest soul and so much love to give. He is a timid and shy boy, but in spite of whatever circumstances he's been through, he is still immediately affectionate and learns to trust quickly. He is very gentle and docile and hardly makes any noise, but is still a very social and inquisitive boy. He is comfortable with other dogs and is also comfortable in the sights/sounds/surroundings of the city. His greatest joy in life is curling up on the couch and laying in a ball by your side (ideally getting belly rubs). Physical touch is his love language and he would prefer it 24/7 if possible. He is incredibly soft-tempered and low energy when indoors, perfectly content to nap and relax all day. He has adapted to leash walks very well and is energetic and increasingly confident outside. He does well on pack walks too. He is almost completely housetrained, but has had the occasional accident in his crate. The only time you will hear a peep out of this little guy is when he's left home alone in his crate/put in his crate at night. Loki gets very anxious when left alone in his crate, and we are actively working on improving his confidence and ability to self soothe. It takes Loki time to feel safe and to feel loved, but his responses to gestures of safety and love are immeasurable. He has blossomed before our eyes in no time at all, and we're starting to see bursts of this funny little personality and playful spirit shine through. He's a treasure and a future soul dog to be sure. Level of dog ownership experience required:BEGINNER – “Beginner” doesn’t necessarily mean easy as all dogs will require time, work, and patience, but we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale because of their breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.  Energy level:LOWER/MEDIUM – Pretty chill indoors and won’t demand endless amounts of stimulation and exercise but still needs a solid 30 to 45 minute walk in addtion to potty breaks. Okay in the city?City pup – Seems unfazed by the sights and sounds, may as well have been born here. Potty trained?Yes – Few accidents SEPARATION ANXIETYWorking on it- Seems comfortable in the crate, may whine a little at first but settles pretty quickly. We use the crate when we leave the pup alone and/or at night. Wouldn't say no to a dog friend! COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERSIn between bean – Fine with meeting new people but not particularly interested, kind of shy in busy social situations like a gathering or a packed day in the park. Loki is an inherently social boy who wants to meet every passerby and new dog friend on the street. He might be shy when approached by a new dog, but he always opens up, and his confidence and comfort levels are growing every day. He is very happy to be pet by strangers once they pass the sniff test. He spooks occasionally on very crowded busy streets, but that's simply as he's new to leash walks. It's astounding he's so comfortable and brave on the leash already, and I can tell he will be a pro in no time. Social with other dogs?Yes – Good with most other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other canines RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.)Yes – Seems to get along with cats etc., either tries to play with them or is mostly uninterested Comfortable with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)Yes for most ages – very confident, gentle, low energy, tolerant, not mouthy MOUTHY BEHAVIORPast this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in their mouth that aren’t food. Doesn’t try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime Very little interest in toys or chews at all, up until now, but hopefully this will come with comfort and confidence CUDDLE BUG LEVELHigh – Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time Loki would live in your arms if you let him. He is so loving and so desperate to be loved, it is truly one of the most endearing things I've ever experienced. LEASH MANNEROld Pro – Doesn’t pull hard or need much direction. Even though Loki is clearly new to leash walks, he's already a pro and is incredibly easy and enjoyable to walk. He may occasionally get spooked in larger crowds/busy areas and gets confused/needs help when he snags on an obstacle. Other than that, he completely understands and enjoys the process and loves adventure walks to explore his new city. Medical status:Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from Tennessee or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How did this dog end up with Social Tees? Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them.
