Meet Maya aka Velcro Girl (in the best possible way) Maya is a gorgeous 35-lb Rhodesian Ridgeback mix with stunning burnt-orange coloring, soulful amber eyes, and a sweet dark mask that makes her look permanently smitten with life. About 12 months old, Maya is a devoted young mama who raised three puppies and is now ready to be someone’s beloved companion. She’s gentle and a little thoughtful at first, but once she warms up, Maya is deeply loving, loyal, and emotionally tuned in. She earned the nickname “Velcro” because she truly wants to be near her people. Her signature move? Greeting you with a stuffed toy in her mouth every time you come home — her way of saying “I missed you.” Maya is: • Great with other dogs • Excellent on leash • Knows sit • Loves zoomies and cuddles • A total lap-lover • Sensitive, intuitive, and people-oriented Maya isn’t just beautiful — she’s soft, soulful, steady, and special. The kind of dog that truly belongs with you. If you’re looking for a loyal best friend who sticks close and fills your life with warmth, Maya is ready to meet you. Story
Meet our sweet, beautiful girl Arya! She is approximately 8 years old and 60 lbs of pure love! Arya is super sweet, very affectionate, mellow, smart, and funny. She is the goodest girl who will do anything for a yummy treat! She absolutely loves her belly rubs and can often be found on her back, legs stretched out, waiting for her pets! She needs a little bit of time to warm up to a new environment or person, but once she gets comfortable, she will shower you with so much affection every day, everywhere. Here’s how to describe this sweet pea: - Walks great on leash (loves going on walks) - Easy to train as she’s super food motivated (food will make her do anything) - Smart and picks up new tricks/toys quickly - Crate and house trained - Loves to spend time with her human. She’ll be happy just sitting next to you - Very good in the car - Very good with brushing teeth, cleaning ears, shower - Loves belly rubs and pets - Loves squeaky toys - Good with other calm large dogs - She takes a daily anti-inflammatory for her minor arthritis but has no problem going on walks and living a happy life! :) As Arya needs a little bit of time to warm up, an adults-only home is recommended. Arya also needs to be the only pet in the home, and prefers a mellow home. Arya has never forgotten any of her fosters, and gets SO excited when they come to visit her. She can't wait to have that same excitement for you! Adopt our bundle of joy! Arya had a very tough life so far and is so ready to embrace her forever family. Story
Beau von Blaustein is a marvelous, 2 year-old red-coated boy—possibly a Ridgeback mix—with an inquisitive nature. The word everyone uses to describe him is elegant, he is so regal, and the tallest dog we have at 29 inches. Beau was found living by a dumpster, near the home of one of our staff members. She took him home and just watching a video of him with her small dogs won our hearts. In playgroup with the big dogs he does well, but prefers little dogs. He is a social explorer who loves to take in the world with his nose to the sky, but he always makes time to lean in for pets and soak up every bit of affection he can get. He is a gentle soul who is learning his commands and is very polite when receiving treats. On his walks, he is an enthusiastic companion who has done great traveling alongside other dogs. While he is a tolerant and calm presence in playgroups, he prefers the company of other gentle, non-pushy dogs. This medium-energy, affectionate fellow even tested well with cats, making him a versatile and loving addition to a variety of homes. We took Beau to an animal shelter to make sure no one was looking for him, but when no one came, we happily got him back. Spread the word, we worry no one will be looking for a dog like Beau at a German Shepherd Rescue! Rescued from the North Central animal shelter. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN Beau von Blaustein YOU MUST FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE: www.sheprescue.org Application link: http://www.sheprescue.org/Application_to_Adopt_a_Dog%20Main.html Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
