Story
About Me: Name: Braille Breed (or best guess): Shiba Inu Approximate Age: 6 yr Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 25 lb Adoption Fee: $495 (fee will be reduced by sponsors) Requirements: patient family, safe home for a blind dog Why In Rescue: puppy mill survivor Profile:  Braille came to us from a commercial breeder because she was blind.  We discovered that she had glaucoma in both eyes and to relieve her discomfort from her eyes, both eyes were removed.  She is doing well after surgery.  She was also spayed and had her teeth cleaned (and some extractions).  She has learned the routine and layout of the shelter, and is doing great and learning what certain words mean (like outside, treats, hello, goodbye).  She will obviously need to have a patient adopter who will set her up for success in her new home as she learns the layout and routine.  If there are other pets in the family, they will need to be calm and gentle, as it wouldn't be fair to Braille to have dogs jumping on her when she can't see them coming.  We have worked on her with leash walking a couple times, but a fenced yard would be best for her.  If you think you may have the right home for this wonderful, quiet, and shy girl, please fill out the pre-adoption application.  She does love to play with her squeaker toys and especially loves freeze dried liver treats.  We all love Braille and want her to have the best of homes! Note- one of the pictures is just after her eye removal surgery, the other is prior to her surgery. Braille has some sponsors for her adoption fee, so her fee will be reduced by those to an approved adopter. Dogs from commercial breeders are generally undersocialized (often very scared/shy/skittish) and probably never lived in a house.  They will need to learn things like how to walk on a leash, go up stairs, and what things like a television are.  They need a patient adopter who will give them the time they need to adjust and to learn to trust people.  Every baby step forward needs to be celebrated, and the dog needs to be accepted for who they are at each step.  Some dogs can adjust quickly and learn how to be a loved pet pretty easily.  Others can take a long time to even be comfortable with things like walking through the house and being in the same room as a person.  No matter how far and how fast the breeder dogs progress, they are wonderful dogs and deserve a great home after their life on the puppy farm.  A fence or at least a secure fenced in potty area is highly recommended for the dog's safety, and may be required for some dogs.  Another small dog in the house can also help many former breeders adjust faster to life in a home, and also may be required in some cases.  We do put the needs of the dog's first, so it is nothing personal if we determine a particular dog isn't suitable for your specific home and living situation. If considering adopting a former breeding dog, the following article is good to read to help you understand the special needs these dogs may have.  http://nowisconsinpuppymills.com/mill-survivors.html If interested in adoption, the first step is filling out the pre-adoption application at http://www.bichonrescues.com/pre-adoption-form-dog  If link isn't clickable, please copy/paste or visit http://www.bichonrescues.com.  Please note, filling out inquiry forms on Petfinder or Adoptapet and/or their application forms does not constitute an application for one of our dogs.  Priority in responding to inquires and applications is always to the applications filled out on our website, time constraints limit the number of other inquires we can reply to. We do our best to evaluate the dogs while they are with us, but they sometimes act different in the shelter environment than they do in a home.  Many times we do not know the actual breed/mix or age of the dog, in that case we use our best guess as to breed and age.   We are located in Mukwonago, WI.  Adopters must come to us, we do not ship our dogs.  Please do not apply for a dog until you are ready to adopt.  Once an application is approved you will be notified by email to make an appointment to meet the dog.  All dogs are seen by appointment only. The adoption fee through Bichon and Little Buddies Rescue is $495 for most adults and up to $650 for puppies which includes Wi State Sales Tax.  Included in this fee is your new companion who will be spayed/neutered, have a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (as required by state law), current on age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm tested (if old enough) and started on preventative, microchipped, and given a general wormer.  Other medical needs will also have been taken care of, such as dentals and treating ear infections.  To assist you and your new pet in adjusting to life together, you may chose to take an 8 week age appropriate obedience training course at For Pet's Sake Dog Training in Mukwonago, WI for $75 (up to $230 value).  You may opt to take Puppy Kindergarten, Adult Beginners, or Small Dogs Big Hearts.  You must register for the class within 90 days of adoption for the reduced fee.  For more information on the classes visit www.forpetssake.cc  More important information: ***We are a Wisconsin based rescue and do not ship our pets.  If you are considering adoption you must be willing to drive to meet and adopt the pet, as well as bring the pet back to us if the adoption doesn't work.  We adopt primarily in WI and IL, but will consider applicants in MN, IA, and MI.*** ***Please do not set up an appointment to meet the animals until you are ready to take your pet home.  If the meeting results in a match, you can often take the dog/cat home the same day or within a couple days if the medical care hasn't been completed.  We are not able to hold pets for adopters beyond this time.  Thanks for understanding.*** ***While we hope all of our adoptions lead to permanent homes for the animals we place, sometimes things just don't work out.  We do have a 30 day trial period.  For the first 30 days, if you or Bichon and Little Buddies decide that the adoption isn't a good match for either the humans or the pet, the adoption fee will be refunded minus $75 within 30 days of the return of the dog.  Bichon and Little Buddies also requires adopters to return the pet to us at any time that they are unable or unwilling to care for the animal anymore.*** ***We do not show dogs without an appointment.  The first step in adoption is filling out the pre-adoption application at http://www.bichonrescues.com/pre-adoption-form-dog  Please do not call/email until AFTER you have filled out an application.*** Bichon and Little Buddies is a State Licensed Rescue # 268555-DS October 21, 2024, 10:41 am

Story
My name is Lisa and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m 6 years old and tiny, weighing just 15 lbs. Foster mom says I’m a sweetheart! I came here to Sussex, WI, from the commercial breeding facility where I made puppies. That was a hard life. Living in a home is new to me and I’m still getting used to it, but I like it! I love ear scratches from my foster mom, going outside to chase squirrels and birds, and watching the world around me. So far, there isn’t much I don’t like – except baths. I’m cautious at first and skittish around new things, but I am curious too. I follow my foster mom around and hang out with her when she works from home. I’m also her best gardening buddy. I like it when she carries me and I give her gentle kisses when I'm happy. I’m a quiet girl and well-behaved in my crate. But my goofy side is starting to leak out, like when I lay on my back and wriggle around, or when I smile with my tongue hanging out. I’m a classic escape-artist Shiba. I’ve outsmarted all of the gates already! I love being outside, in the yard or out for a walk. I am very interested in other dogs, though I prefer other dogs that are not too high-energy. There is a cat here, who I ignore. My perfect forever home will be understanding as I adjust to new people and surroundings. I’ll do best with another nice dog to be my friend and show me the ropes. I’ve never met any really little kids, and sudden movements and unexpected noises can spook me, I think I’d do okay with older kids if they are patient and respectful. My forever family will be very careful opening doors, since I’ve shown my escape-artist skills. Knowing how to prevent me from getting loose will be important. I’m healthy, spayed and vaccinated. When I first came into recue, I had 13 bad teeth removed. I feel so much better! If you live in the Midwest and are interested in a sweet, goofy, quiet, adorable girl like me, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to learn more and to apply to become approved to adopt. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home so they can make sure we’ll be a good match. Once approved, SIRA will connect you with my foster mom so we can meet!

Story
My name is Konai and I’m looking for my forever home. I am a snuggly, sweet boy. My “must haves” are a family who will keep regular 6-month vet check-ups and prescription diet so I’ll stay healthy. I’m 8 years old and I came to SIRA from a commercial breeding facility where I helped make puppies. I love this life so much better! I can’t wait to have a forever family of my very own! I love snuggling with my foster mom. I get so excited when she comes home that I jump and spin like crazy. Can you blame me? She gives me such wonderful pets and scritches and walks and treats! I give her kisses in return. She says I’m her cuddle bug. When foster mom is home, I like to follow her around so I know where she is. I guess I’m not fond of being alone. I love other dogs. When I see a dog outside on our walk I’ll cry with excitement. There are girl dogs here in my foster home and I get along well with them. I like playing with them and hanging out. I’d love to have a nice dog friend in my forever home, but foster mom says I’d probably do okay as an “only dog” as long as my family is home a lot so I don’t get lonely. I also love going for walks – I like exploring the neighborhood even more than playing in the yard, so I’m fine if my forever family doesn’t have a fence. I like playing with toys, but I still have no clue what to do when foster mom tosses one at me. When I’m not following foster mom around or playing, my favorite things are treats and taking naps. Foster mom says I need to warn you that I snore like a bear. Hrmph! I DO NOT! (Wait, what’s a bear?) I also like rolling around on freshly mopped floors so I can smell clean like the Swiffer spray. Yeah, I’m goofy. Anyway, when I first came to SIRA, my foster family could tell that something wasn’t right. After lots of visits to the vet, they discovered that I had tumors in my colon and I had to have emergency surgery! That was scary and not fun at all. If you follow SIRA’s Facebook page, you may have seen my story. Well, I’m healed now from my surgery and foster mom says that I’m ready for my forever family! Because of my surgery, I’ll need to stay on a prescription diet and treats. I’ll also need to have an ultrasound exam every 6 months to make sure that no new tumors grow back. I’ve never lived with any little humans, but foster mom thinks that I’d be okay with them. I haven’t met any cats or small pets, but I love to chase and hunt critters in the yard, so I’m not sure how I would do with small pets. I’m neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations and I weigh 28 pounds. If you live in the Midwest and would love a sweet, silly snuggle-buddy to share your home with, then I’m your boy! Visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to start the process of becoming an approved adopter with SIRA. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home environment so they can tell if we’ll be a good match. Once approved, SIRA will introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet.
