Story
Meet the sweet Kita! Kita came into our care when her owners could no longer provide care for her, but she is ready for her forever home! Kita is a sweet senior lady who has acclimated to our staff very quickly and loves to spend time out and about! In her previous home she was noted to have lived with kids of all ages as well, but as always, we recommend slow introductions to ensure that everyone is comfortable and setup for success! Kita is a special lady, so we consider her one of our special care adoptions due to having mammary tumors that were removed in our care, having dental disease, as well as being very hard of hearing and could be deaf. Kita would do best in a home with more supervision due to her lack of hearing, to ensure that her safety is prioritized! She really is a sweet lady that just needs some extra care and TLC in her life. Adopting a senior dog is extremely rewarding and would be able to help her live out her golden years in a relaxed way outside of the shelter. If you're interested in Kita, swing by our downtown Chicago adoption center at 510 N. LaSalle, to meet these sweethearts in person. We offer same-day adoptions, free parking, and guide you through the process from start to finish! Learn more about hours and the adoption process at https://anticruelty.org/adopt-info.

Story
My name is Zeus and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m 5 years old and a friendly, playful boy who loves going for walks and watching out the window. I came to my foster home here in Columbus, IN, from a shelter. I was kind-of a mess, with missing fur and bad skin issues. SIRA helped me get the care I needed and now I’m a healthy and handsome 33-lb boy. I’m neutered and vaccinated and my skin is much better - I take Benadryl to keep it clear. I have an inverted nipple, which isn’t a big deal. Foster mom cleans it daily so it doesn’t get infected. I am outgoing and love to meet new people. I love baths – they make me feel so good! And I love to play and get the zoomies. Foster mom says I’m goofy. She says I have a goofy expression on my face that makes me look like I’m a bit confused. I’m working on house-training. I’m learning but sometimes get distracted outside and forget to go potty. I wear a belly band inside to prevent accidents. My perfect forever home would be one with patient humans and a window I can watch from and sometimes bark at the things that pass by. I haven’t met any little human kids yet, but I like older kids. I am kind-of picky about living with other dogs. I’d really love to be an only dog and not have to share my human’s attention. I like to chase cats and outside critters, so I’m probably not a good match for a home with cats or other small pets. If you live in the Midwest and are looking for a sweet and silly boy to be your best friend, visit www.savingshibas.com to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps confirm that we’d be a good match. Once approved, SIRA will introduce you to my foster dad so we can meet.

Story
My name is Travey and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m just over 1 y.o. and I weigh 23 lbs. I came to my foster home in the Chicago area after I got loose, had a bit of a mis-adventure, and ended up in doggie jail. I haven't been at my foster home long, so I'm still adjusting. I love getting love and attention from foster mom and my favorite place to sleep is in bed with her! I'm super smart, eager to please, and learn quickly. I'm potty trained and do well in my crate when foster mom goes out (though I've been known to deploy the "Shiba scream" if I'm left all alone). I love treats, which helps motivate me to learn. I have mastered leash walking. I might pull if I see a squirrel or bunny that I want to chase (I've definitely got a high prey drive). I've also learned how to jump over gates that are supposed to contain me, so my forever family will need to be careful to prevent escapes. I'm a curious girl, but new things are hard for me. I'm suspicious of new people and will bark at them. I can be reactive to other dogs when I'm out on walks. I'll be fiercely loyal to my family and will need humans who have time to focus on me too. Because I did not have a great upbringing, I'll need a patient forever family who will commit to training and teaching me how to become a well-adjusted adult. My ideal forever home will be one with a securely fenced yard - no shared walls, since I can be vocal. I'd do best in a home with no cats or small pets, since I've got a high prey drive. I get along with most of the other dogs in my foster home, but can be dog-selective, so a laid-back, easy going dog friend would be best. Foster mom thinks I'd do okay with older children once I get to know them, but I'm not a good match for really little kids. I'm a healthy girl - spayed and vaccinated. I had giardia when I came into foster care, but am recovering nicely and feeling fine. If you live in the Midwest and are looking for a best friend and diamond in the rough, then I'm your girl. Visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you to make sure we'll be a good match. Once approved, they'll introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet.

Story
My name is Nyak and I’m looking for my forever home. I came to my foster home here in Joliet, IL, from a commercial breeding facility where I spent my whole life. I’m a quiet, laid-back guy who doesn’t cause any trouble. My favorite things are treats (mozzarella cheese sticks and liver sausage) and all of the pets and scritches foster mom gives me! I also enjoy watching all of the neighborhood action through the window. I don’t bark, but boy, I would like to chase the birds and squirrels I see. I’m a good boy in the house, even when my foster mom has to leave. I’m potty trained and don’t have accidents unless I don’t get regular potty breaks. I love to go for walks and leave “pee-mail” for the other dogs to read. I get along with the other dogs in my foster home and am always curious, but polite, to dogs we meet on walks. I haven’t met any cats or small pets, so I don’t know what I’d think about them. I did live briefly with a couple of human kids and that was fine with me. I’m 10 years old and I weigh around 27 lbs. I’m neutered and vaccinated and a healthy boy. When I first came into foster care, I had occasional episodes that looked like seizures. I went to see vets and got poked and prodded and tested and everything, but the vets could find nothing wrong. They decided that I should stop receiving monthly flea/tick preventatives, since some dogs are really sensitive to them. That seems to have helped! So the vet says I don’t need any special care or treatment – just something for my forever family to be aware of. My perfect forever family will be very careful to prevent escapes since I’m really fast (vigilant when opening doors and gates). They should be patient with me as I continue to adjust to live in a home with a family. In return, I’ll be a loyal friend and quiet companion. If you live in the Midwest and are interested in a handsome guy like me, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you so they can make sure we’ll be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet!

Story
My name is Roxy and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m 5 y.o. and weigh 30 lbs. I came to my foster home here in Des Plaines, IL, after my person died. That was so hard, but thanks to SIRA, I’m happy again and my goofy side is on full display. I love attention from my foster family. I’ll lay on my back and paddle my paws in the air for a belly rub. I’m not shy – I love saying hi to strangers. If I am not getting enough adoration, I’ll boop you with my nose and grumble at you to PAY ATTENTION TO MEEE!!! I’m patient and gentle with little kids. I sometimes get excited and jump up on my hind legs, so my foster mom says I’ll do best with humans who are steady on their feet and not easily knocked over. I’m a good girl in the house – no potty accidents or destruction. I love to play with other dogs! I’m friendly, but like most Shibas, I play rough, so my dog sibling should be able to handle my energy. I love to chase critters in the yard, so I’m not a good match for cats or small pets. I’ll chase anything that moves – especially blowing leaves! I’m obsessed. I enjoy leash walks, but foster mom says I could use some training since I pull. Like many Shibas, I’m a door bolter, so my forever family should guard against escapes (baby gates help keep me from squirting out of open doors). I’m healthy – spayed and vaccinated. I have a skin allergy, which is managed well with medication and diet. My perfect forever family will have another playful and energetic dog to be my friend, no cats/small pets, and I’d do best in a home with no shared walls, since I’m vocal. If you’re looking for a someone who’ll be your shadow (especially if there’s food around), then I’m your girl! Foster mom says I'll make someone really happy. If you live in the Midwest and are interested, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt for more information and to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. Story
My name is Tortellini and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m still a puppy – I turn 1 y.o. in October – and I’m a little girl, currently 15 lbs. According to my DNA test, I’m 56% Shiba and 33% Australian Cattle Dog. I came to my foster home here in Quincy, IL, after being abandoned. I was just trying to survive, but the property owner was threatening to shoot me, so I’m grateful that SIRA came to get me! I was scared and uncertain at first, but I’ve settled in and am feeling much more relaxed. I love the affection and attention that I get from my foster family. The chew toys here are great and have fun unstuffing all of the soft toys. I’m also learning to walk on a leash. Foster mom says I’m doing well and with some more practice, I’ll be a pro. I’m a good girl in the house with no potty accidents. And I even le foster mom trim my nails without a fuss. I’m not a fan of being in my kennel, though. There are other dogs here in my foster home and I like to play and wrestle with them. At first, I was protective of my food, but once I figured out that there’s plenty for all of us dogs, I’m not as worried now. I haven’t met any cats here, but I love to hunt and chase critters in the yard, so foster mom thinks I’m mot a good match for small pets. I can be shy and cautious around strangers at first and loud noises spook me. I haven’t been exposed to really little kids, but I’m warming up to the teenagers here in my foster home. I’m a healthy girl, spayed and vaccinated. My perfect forever home will have a securely fenced yard for me to play in. Foster mom thinks I’ll do best in a home without shared walls. If you live in the Midwest and want to be my forever home, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt for more information and to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter.
