Story
*Courtesy Post* Baxter is not an Animal Aid Society Dog. He is not kenneled at Animal Aid Society. Please request more information by sending your name & phone number to contact@animalsidsociety.orgBaxter loves the outdoors. A stay at home person or someone who works from home is best fit. Baxter does wear a male wrap in the home if he is not taken outside regularly. His family can no longer give him the time and attention he needs. A fenced yard would be good for him to go outdoors often. He does bark for attention as little dogs often do, so an apartment may not be the best for him. No cats, he likes to chase! An adult only home is best for Baxter.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Story
Meet Cherry !! A clingy and playful girl. She is one of the now 22 dogs we have taken in from a horrible hoarding situation. She survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water and no electricity for a very long time. She’s made a lot of progress but still has a ways to go. Cherry is approx. 2 years old. She is a female Yorkie mix best guess. She weighs 12 Pounds and is full grown. She will be spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as part of her adoption. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. She is very shy at first and takes time to adjust to new people. She becomes comfortable with women faster than men. It’s a process of building trust with a dog that’s been neglected like this. Once she trust you she is very attached and cuddly. A lapdog that also likes to play. Cherry has done well with other dogs. She can be shy and scared with them at first. She has no real interest in playing with other dogs but coexists around them fine. She does sometimes get jealous of the other dogs being around her person and will cry if she isn’t getting all of the attention. She is fostered with cats and doesn’t try to hurt them but will chase them at times when she is feeling spunky. Most of the time she ignores them. She is not fostered with kids but we think she would do well with calmer older kids. She will need kids and adults in the home to be willing to give her space and time to adjust to them and feel safe. As with any dog she would need any children in the house to be respectful and not treat her like a toy. She will try to bite if she is grabbed, cornered or scared into it. This is why she must go to a home with kids old enough to understand and follow rules around her. Cherry really hates her crate. She will cry when crated and has not accepted it yet. She shows some anxiety when crated. If you want to crate her it will be a process and much more training necessary to get her fully comfortable with it. She has done very well on car rides, she is a little nervous but does not get sick. She had clearly never been on a leash before and was terrified of it at first. With the use of a harness, she has gotten better about it but still has a long way to go. She often has to be carried mid way through a walk as she gets scared. She is not fully potty trained. She came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going anywhere else. When taken out frequently she is starting to do better with it. She is slowly figuring things out but her new owner will just need to be patient and understanding given her history. She is doing really well with routine and structure. Cherry had to fight for limited food in her last home and due to this she is allowed to eat separately here. Dogs coming from horrific situations like this may have lasting issues sharing food with other dogs. She is fine with people around her food and takes treats gently. She may end up able to eat around other dogs but she may not. She currently has growled at other dogs that approach her when she is eating or has something she does not want to share. It is easy enough to feed her in her crate or separate room to allow her to feel safe and secure after what she has been through. She has a medium energy level so far. She is one that is more playful with people than any of the others. It takes time for her to trust you and then she has that spunky playful side. She may even become more energetic as time goes on. She can get over excited when playing and nip at hands. She can be redirected with a toy but still has not fully learned how to play with people. Overall Cherry is working hard to overcome a rough start to life. She is so sweet and really wants to trust and feel safe. We think she will end up being a cuddly yet fun little dog. If you are willing to help her learn the rest of her training and give her some time to trust you then you will end up with a great addition to your family. ***Do not apply to adopt one of these hoarding case dogs if you’re not serious about giving them time to adjust. It’s absolutely unfair to expect them to adjust in a day or two. We’ve had 3 adopted and returned within 24 hours of adoption for not being immediately settled and perfect in a completely new place. All returned for things we explained upfront about them. It’s completely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect that from dogs that have been through what they have. The last thing they need is to be shuffled around due to adopters not listening or being serious about their needs*** Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (She will need to be adopted within a 1 hour drive radius) Please message us directly at VillageDogResource@gmail.com with questions or to get an application. It’s a process of building trust with a dog that’s been neglected like this. Persimmon has done well with other dogs of all sizes and ages but she can be shy and scared with them at first. She loves the lab in the house but otherwise is indifferent to having another dog around. She is not fostered with cats so we do not know how she will do but we suspect she would do fine. She is not fostered with kids but we think she would do well with calmer older kids. She will need kids and adults in the home to be willing to give her space and time to adjust to them and feel safe. As with any dog she would need any children in the house to be respectful and not treat her like a toy. Persimmon is mostly crate trained. She uses her crate as her safe place at times but can be whiny when locked in. She’s getting better about not going to the bathroom in her crate. She will try to alert you that she needs to go out, but you have to be quick enough. She has done very well on car rides and does not get sick. She had clearly never been on a leash before and was terrified of it at first. With the use of a harness, she has gotten better about it but still has a long way to go. She is terrified of baths and turns into a mini velociraptor. She will need work to feel safe at bath time. She is not fully potty trained. She came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going anywhere else. She is doing better and bringing some treats outside helps her relax and feel comfortable doing her business out there. She is slowly figuring things out but her new owner will just need to be patient and understanding given her history. Persimmon had to fight for limited food in her last home and due to this she is allowed to eat separately here. Dogs coming from horrific situations like this may have lasting issues sharing food with other dogs. She is fine with people around her food and takes treats gently. She may end up able to eat around other dogs but she may not. She has not shown any signs of food aggression when other dogs walk by her crate when she is eating but that is as far as it has been tested. It is easy enough to feed her in her crate to allow her to feel safe and secure after what she has been through. She has a low energy level so far. We do expect when she is more comfortable that her energy level may increase. She has started to have playful moments now that she is settling in. Shes starting to enjoy getting attention and has started coming to us when called. Shes is very food motivated and we are using that to help her trust people. Overall persimmon is working hard to overcome a rough start to life. She is so sweet and really wants to trust and feel safe. We think she will end up being a cuddly little dog. Story
Meet Clementine!! This beautiful girl is one of the 13 dogs we took in from a horrible hoarding situation. She survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water and no electricity for a very long time. This sweet girl is timid but wants to love. She will need some time to adjust to a new place. Clementine is an approx 3 year old female. She is a mix of a lot of small breeds we guess. She weighs 12.5 Pounds. She has already been spayed, is up to date on vaccines and microchipped. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. She is one of the more timid ones. She will run and find a hiding spot and wait until you’re not looking to come out. She does really well with another super social dog around. When her buddy Guava is around she will come out of hiding and follow her over to us for petting and treats. Another dog in the home really helps her see people are safe and fun. If you grab her she will sit and cuddle with you. Clementine has had no issues around other dogs. She coexists with them well. Her and Guava choose to cuddle up together in the same kennel. She doesn’t mind hyper dogs around either. She’s not fostered with cats but we think she would be fine with them. She is fostered with kids and does fine with calmer kids that can give her space until she’s comfortable. As with any dog she would need any children in the house to be respectful and not treat her like a toy. A sweet, low energy kid with a lap to cuddle in would likely make her very happy. Clementine is great about crate training. She uses it as a safe space and is very quiet unless she needs to go out. She does not go potty in her crate. She has done very well on car rides and does not get sick. She is very new to leash training and is terrified of the leash as well as being outdoors so it is slow going. She gets scared when she feels the tension on the leash. She will need a lot more time to get settled and used to the outdoors and the leash. She is not potty trained. She came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going anywhere else. She will not potty in her crate but as soon as you let her out and leave the room she will go on the floor. She is working on learning about going outside to potty. It is taking some time as she is afraid of being outside and the leash. Her new owner will just need to be patient and understanding given her history. Clementine has not had any issues sharing food with people. We do give her space to eat alone from other animals so she doesn’t feel rushed. Given her history of having to fight other dogs just to eat it would be a good idea to always give her alone time with her food. She deserves to feel comfortable when she is eating. She has been around another dog and tried to eat their food. They growled and she backed off so she seems less likely to fight over it than some from the same home. She currently has a lower energy level so far. We expect she will get more energetic once she fully decompresses. She is quick when she wants to be and a good climber. She’s definitely got some spunk when she chooses to. Clementine needs a person willing to work with her and gain her trust. We can see how badly she wants to trust someone. If you’re willing to put in the work with her she’s definitely worth it. This sweet beautiful girl has so much potential. Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (She will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius) ‼️Please message us directly at VillageDogResource@gmail.com with questions or to get an application For faster response and to see more pics visit our facebook page.‼️
