🐾 Meet Polo — Your Big, Lovable Shadow! 🐾 Polo is an 8-year-old gentle giant with a heart every bit as big as he is. This sweet boy is a total baby who wants nothing more than to be close to his people. If you’re sitting, he wants to be leaning against you Here at the shelter, Polo is feeling very stressed and overwhelmed, and it shows in some jumpy, excited behavior. He doesn’t always remember his manners, but with patience, routine, and kindness, he’ll absolutely blossom. Because of this, Polo is looking for an adult only home or a home with teens and up that way he and everybody else are most comfortable! He already knows sit, give paw, and lay down, and with the right guidance he can keep building on those good manners. Polo loves all toys, but rope toys are his absolute favorite! A good game of tug-o-war will make his whole day. He’s a big, strong guy and gets very excited on leash — he pulls with enthusiasm — so his adopters should be prepared for his strength and help him learn that walks can be calm and fun. Polo is looking for adopters who can provide structure, patience, and lots of time to decompress. Polo is waiting for you! Come meet your new best friend! Ready to Adopt? You have two options: #1- VISIT IN PERSON Come during our open adoption hours: Tuesday - Saturday,12:30 - 3:00pm. You’ll be able to meet available dogs in the shelter. (Dogs in foster care are not available for in-person visits.) #2- ADOPT REMOTELY OR PLACE A 24-HOUR HOLD** If you’re ready to adopt without meeting the dog first, or you’d like to place a non-refundable $25 hold to reserve a dog for 24 hours, just call or email us: (413) 781-4000 x 1 springfield@dakinhumane.org. We are often helping other clients when you call, but we return voicemails and emails within 24 hours. **Holds are not available for puppies under six months, on Saturdays, or during adoption events. -------------------------------------------- All adult dog adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies and kennel cough vaccinations - heartworm test -current parvo/distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -microchip implanted & registered to adopter -treatment of fleas & ticks -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days of adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Story
BRAD is a nervous boy who has been settling in with his foster, decompressing, and showing himself to be an affectionate pup. OTHER PETS: Brad was unsure meeting dogs at the shelter and would likely do best as an only pet. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER Brad will do best with someone who has experience with positive reinforcement while helping a nervous dog gain confidence. Brad has some anxiety going through doors, and meeting new people, so a slow introduction to new stimuli and the world will be essential in helping him feel comfortable in a new home and environment. While he has been nervous going through doors, barriers should be used while he is still nervous so he doesn't accidentally become startled and find himself lost. [Some Experience] KIDS: Brad bonds closely with his people as he becomes more relaxed. He is very affectionate and social, but young children may be frightening to him. He would be a best fit for teens and older humans that would be able to recognize when he needs space, and when he requests interactions. [15+ / Dog Savvy (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Brad enjoys playing in the foster's fenced yard, and so far is going on short walks as he builds confidence and takes in his surroundings. He is a combination of playful and affectionate, and will benefit from regular exercise, and plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles and games to help meet his needs. Mental stimulation is incredibly important for all dogs, and can help worried dogs cope with the world. Because he is nervous, a leash or fence will be necessary for all outings. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Average]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Brad bond with his new owner as well as help him learn new skills and tricks. Positive reinforcement, and counterconditioning will help him create happy associations with things he finds scary. Helping Brad continue to blossom will mean letting him learn about new things at his own pace without being forced. GROOMING: Occasional brushing will help keep Brad's coat clean. Story
OTHER PETS: Sugar is excitable with dogs, and will likely do well in a home with a playmate. She would do best with a tolerant dog that can keep up with her high energy antics and rough & rowdy playstyle. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE: Sugar will thrive with an experienced dog owner who understands positive reinforcement, canine body language and signals. She needs someone who can recognize signs of stress or discomfort and work with her using patience and positive reinforcement and help build her confidence. [Some Experience]KIDS: Because Sugar can be nervous around new people and is sensitive to being handled, she would do best in a relaxed, predictable environment. She is not suited for homes with young children but may do well with respectful teenagers (12+) who can understand and respect her boundaries and preferences. A meet-and-greet is required to ensure a good fit. [12+ (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Sugar enjoys daily walks and LOVES to play! She can be very jumpy when she and could make a great hiking companion given time and positive reinforcement training. She has a high energy level and would benefit from regular exercise to keep her happy and healthy, as well as plenty of mental enrichment such as puzzles and games. She would likely benefit from another canine companion as well. [Good Walking Buddy / Olympic Athlete]VETERINARY CARE: [Routine]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Sugar is still at the beginning of her training journey, and will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while she adjusts. Positive reinforcement training will help Sugar not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to feel more comfortable and confident in herself! It will provide a good opportunity for her to bond with her new owner as well. [Moderate]GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]December 11, 2025, 10:22 am

Story
Sonata arrived at TJO shut down and fearful. She was slow to trust, but eventually grew brave enough to venture outside and has been building her confidence every day since. She still has some amount of stanger danger, and will require slow introductions with anyone new she may be meeting. But given time and patience, she'll settle into your life like she's always been there.OTHER PETS: Sonata was relaxed when meeting one dog, but intense when meeting another. She is dog selective and would likely do well with another relaxed dog that will co-exist with her, but would also be happy as an only dog. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE: Sonata would do best with someone that has experience with positive reinforcement and nervous dogs in order to help her adjust to her new environment and the new people she may meet. She will do best with very slow introductions to new things, at her pace. [Some Experience]KIDS: Sonata is nervous and would likely do best in a quiet home without a lot of activity or foot traffic. She also has some pain in her hind end that makes her a bit sensitive to certain types of handling. She could do well with older children that can understand how to best interact with her and when to let her have her own space. [15+ (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Sonata is a nervous dog that often prefers to keep to herself while curled up on her bed. While her level of energy may change outside of the shelter once she decompresses and gains confidence, she is currently content with short walks when the weather is fair. A combination of mental enrichment like puzzle toys or a treat-filled kong, and regular exercise, will help to keep her mind happy and healthy. [Couch Potato]VETERINARY CARE: Sonata is currently on pain medication for some stiffness in her back legs, which could be from a past injury or something related to her age. She will likely need above average vet care to ensure that she remains comfortable as she continues to age. [Above Average]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Sonata will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while she adjusts. Positive reinforcement training will help Sonata not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to feel more comfortable and confident in herself! It will provide a good opportunity for her to bond with her new owner as well. [Minimal]GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]December 9, 2025, 4:03 pm

Story
Lil' Max is a young dog who enjoys playing with humans and dogs and sometimes toys; he enjoys exploring good smells as well and those can distract him from toys. Lil' Max can be timid when meeting new people but warms up quickly given calm quiet moments to get to know them.OTHER PETS: Lil' Max is playful with other dogs and takes feedback and communication well. He would likely get along with most dog-friendly dogs; Max's best fit would be with a tolerant, well socialized dog who isn't interested in escalating a tense moment. As with all our dogs, Lil' Max should meet any dogs he would be living with prior to adoption. [Likely (With proper introduction)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Someone who has owned a dog before, and experience with positive reinforcement, would be more prepared for a puppy (and the challenges that come with them) than a first time guardian.[Some Experience] KIDS: Lil' Max has not exhibited resource guarding while at TJO, and is comfortable with most handling. He is social and enjoys playing with humans, but is a puppy and still learning the ropes. Max is also still a growing dog and may eventually be large or strong enough to accidently injure a small human while playing. [10+ / Dog Savvy (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lil' Max is a curious puppy who loves exploring the world around him and playfully interacting with humans. He will play with toys if there isn't an enticing smell catching his attention. We expect Max to grow into a medium sized dog but we may be wrong! Utilizing a combination of mental enrichment such food puzzles & games, and regular, age appropriate exercise will keep Lil' Max engaged while meeting his needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Lil' Max bond with his new owner, build confidence, and learn skills and some fun tricks. Ongoing learning and happy experiences will help him enjoy adventures with his guardians. [Moderate] GROOMING: [Minimal]December 11, 2025, 10:22 am

Needs experienced adopter, House-trained,
Story
Due to my father’s inability to care for him, Jasper is not getting the exercise or attention he needs. He only goes out to eat and use the bathroom, and this lack of stimulation has led to anxiety and destructive behavior around the house. It is me and my father living at home, he’s never been around children so i’m unsure how his behavior would be around them. Jasper would thrive in a home where he can get regular exercise, mental stimulation, and a stable routine. He needs a patient, experienced owner who can help him work through his anxiety and offer him the attention he deserves. Jasper is a 4-year-old dog. He shows food-related aggression toward other dogs and must be kept separate when eating if you have other pets. He is not aggressive toward people with his food. If you’re interested in Jasper, please reach out.
