Decompression, Cookies, and Learning Humans Aren’t So Bad When I got to Mo’s house, they gave me my own cozy space to decompress, breathe, and finally learn the joy of regular meals (yes, several a day, thank you very much). They taught me what “potty outside” means, gave me soft blankets, talked to me gently, and showed me what safe love feels like. And slowly… the “don’t touch me!” Grinch in me started melting like a snowman in Phoenix. My Hip-Hoppin’ Bulldog Shuffle Do I walk? HECK YES. I walk, I wobble, and I can move faster than Santa’s elves when the cookies come out. I do have hip dysplasia—like most English Bulldogs—but mine is extra spicy. My hip sockets didn’t form right, so I strut around with my signature holiday wobble. Phantom of the Opera? No. Leroy of the Wiggle-Opera. Freedom did NEW x-rays and guess what? I still need PT in my future, plus good supplements and a healthy weight. (They DID have to put a few pounds on me… I was skinny like a candy cane.) But I’m doing amazing with the right meds and love. My Personality: A Bulldog Wrapped in Holiday Spirit Listen… I’m a bulldog. Which means I come with a whole personality package. I’m demanding — that’s my #1 talent. I’m opinionated about pretty much everything, dramatic when I don’t get my way, and honestly? I’m absolutely hilarious. But once I decide you’re my person, I’m loyal in a way only a bulldog can be.” I used to be super sketchy about being touched. I did try to bite in the beginning (just calling it like it is), and sometimes when you pick me up I’ll grumble like the Grinch waking up from a nap—but I’ve NEVER gotten anyone. It’s fear, not fury. Hi, I’m Frankie (Francis is my name when I am feeling fancy). I’m a 5-year-old Tri Colored English Bulldog and have the heart of a puppy. When you first meet me, my nubby tail will be wiggling and I will let you fall in love with me. But when you take me home, I will be reserved and shy at first. I will slowly open up and show you my silly side. I will be your shadow so you no longer have to go to the bathroom alone. I am super smart and food motivated. I know how to sit, high five, down, and stay/wait. I’m working on leave it, drop it, and answering to my name (to be honest, I know my name, I just really like the treats). I would do best as an only dog or with a dog that is submissive, and with a family who will set firm and consistent boundaries. I’ve been living with a 5 year old child, and while I do LOVE HER, I have jumped at her when we all are excited, so I might be better suited with a family with children no younger than 5. (By the way, I can jump super high). I absolutely love my toys and food, but I can get a little protective of them. Since I spent some time living on the streets, I learned to guard what was mine to stay safe. Because of that, it’s best if other pets give me space during mealtime or when I have a toy. With love, patience, and consistency, I know I can learn to relax and share more easily. I walk very well on a leash, and like to stop to look at other dogs. I go potty outside (I use a doggie door at my foster’s house), and I enjoy baths and playing in the kiddie pool. I do worry when you are away, but if you promise to always come back, I can handle you leaving from time to time. I love my ears and butt scratches, and apparently my eyebrows are good luck so don’t forget to rub those. I will be your best friend, if you’ll be mine. Meet Casper, the handsome goofball with a heart as big as his smile. His journey to happiness has not exactly been a walk in the park. He first found himself in isolation at the Humane Society, battling pneumonia. Once in our care, we learned he also had Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, which made every breath a struggle and left him vulnerable to aspiration pneumonia. But Casper is no quitter. After a successful airway surgery, he is breathing easy and finally able to live life the way every dog should, full of tail wags, zoomies, and sunshine naps. Of course, healing is not just about the body. It is about the heart, too. Casper is currently enrolled in a Board and Train program with our friends at Connected Canine, where he is learning to build trust, confidence, and calm. During training, we discovered that Casper is deaf, which helped explain some of the anxieties he carried early on. With consistent hand signals, patience, and a whole lot of love, Casper has been absolutely thriving and showing just how capable and intelligent he is. This boy is a true social butterfly when it comes to other dogs. He lights up around his canine pals and happily joins in playtime shenanigans. Hey there, I’m Dutch, your 2-year-old, 25-pound brindle elf-in-training with my foster mom! (it’s her busy season) I’ve recently been assigned to Santa’s “Nice List Office Department,” where my main job is to watch the printer like it’s producing top-secret Christmas magic. Every time it starts, I hop up, sit right in front of it, and supervise like a professional. I’m a curious boy with a sweet soul, and I’m learning quickly what it feels like to be safe, loved, and part of a team. She says I’ve got the biggest heart in the workshop — I think she’s right. Life With Me (Your House = My Cozy North Pole Cabin) Inside the house, I’m a pretty calm elf who likes soft blankets, quiet rooms, and staying close enough to hear you move. But the second you take me outside? Boom — I’m a jingle-bell rocket. I trot, explore, sniff, and check the perimeter to make sure no reindeer escaped. At night I go into my crate with some treat bribery (cookies for elves, ya know?), and even though I whine a little, if you gently tell me “night night,” I settle right down. I just like knowing I’m not alone in my little Christmas cabin. I don’t cuddle yet — I’m still learning — but I’ve mastered hopping onto your lap like a good apprentice elf. Potty Time Progress (North Pole Certified!) I’m doing really well with the potty training thingy. I go when you take me outside and I’ve had very few accidents. I don’t know how to tell you I need to go out yet, but with this new Christmas routine, I’m succeeding every day. Santa says I get an extra gold star for this one. My Cute Christmas Quirks Listen… every elf has quirks. Mine just happen to be adorable. I drink water in the morning but refuse breakfast like it’s a stale gingerbread cookie. But when dinner rolls around? Oh, I’m ready. I love having my head pet right between my eyes — it turns my whole face into a melted cocoa puddle. And yes, I figured out how to wiggle under the gate, because elves are built for sneaky missions. I did really well with my bath too, so I’m clean, festive, and ready for holiday photos. Elf Social Life I’m still staying separate from the other dogs because I came with a little cough — Foster Clause mom called it “North Pole Snow Sniffles.” It’s much better, just not totally gone yet. I’m incredibly sweet and will walk right up to any human for pets and love, I love playing with my friends. I do this jerk pause stare and wait for them to make a move if they don’t engage I do it again and the good times roll. I am only doing that when I am off the clock on my breaks. Training & Christmas Academy Skills I’m a smart elf — really smart. I already know “sit” and “no,” and I’m working on “down” this week. I understand the crate routine and I’m picking up on house rules faster than most of the workshop elves. Meet Cookie – A Sweet Soul Looking for Her Safe Place Everyone, meet Cookie, a 5-year-old French Bulldog who recently joined the Freedom Squad from the Arizona Humane Society. Cookie’s life before rescue wasn’t kind—she was found as a stray, her skin struggling with mange, her ear infected, and her little body showing the signs of being bred multiple times. But Cookie’s story isn’t about what happened to her—it’s about where she’s going next. Personality blossom: Since arriving, Cookie has blossomed. Her skin is clearing up beautifully with a salmon-based diet, soothing baths, and daily probiotics. Her ear is healing well with ointment, leaving her with an adorable little crinkle that makes her even more unique. After all, what’s cuter than a Frenchie with two pointy ears? One with a floppy ear? Cookie weighs about 23 pounds and, while the stress of her past has aged her looks, her heart is pure puppy. She loves mealtime, enjoys sunbathing in the yard with her foster siblings, and most of all, she adores being near her human. Foster pupdate: If you’re outside, she’s outside. If you’re inside, she’s right at your feet—or sometimes perched on the armrest, nudging you gently with her nose for love and attention. Her foster mom says she’s a little shadow and the sweetest coworker you could ever ask for. When others crates are open, she is nosey in them hunting for pieces of kibble, but she eats twice a day!! (like all dogs that come into our home we apply the 333 rule. She is as sweet as she is cute, and we are still learning about her and watching her personality come alive as she settles. Training and Trust: Cookie does well with other dogs, but like many Frenchies (and rescue dogs in general), she prefers her food to be hers when she’s in her crate. This is normal and manageable for an adopter willing to give her patience and guidance. With time and trust, she will continue to build her confidence and let go of the insecurities that life taught her to hold onto. She’s potty trained, loves a routine, and will thrive in a home that continues to keep her on a healthy diet and commits to the 3-3-3 Rule: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn the routine, and 3 months to truly settle in.
