Story
Meet Hansel! Hansel is a 11 year old Beagle mix. Hansel is sweet and loves people. Hansel needs a home with a fence and plenty of room to run and smell with that beagle nose! Hansel is working on house training and some basic manners.   WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT HANSEL COMES WITH FREE TRAINING WITH ROSIE DANE DOG TRAINING! Thanks to the Pedigree Foundation, we are able to work with the trainers at Rosie Dane Dog Training to pay for a 10 week Novice Training course once adopted. More details available upon request! If you would like to make Hansel a part of your family, fill out an application at www.barktownrescue.org.  HANSEL'S ADOPTION FEE IS $170The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at the dog's predominant breed or breed mix. We strongly encourage you to select your new pet by looking at each dog's individual personality and pet qualities rather than relying on a breed label that is only our best guess.    Our adoption fees vary from $150 and up.  All of our dogs are up to date on vaccines, heart worm preventives, and flea/tick medication, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Portions of your adoption fee also help care for the sick and injured animals that we take in.  Thank you for supporting us and considering a rescue dog!    September 8, 2026, 3:06 pm

Story
SPECIAL NEEDSMeet Stewart! UPDATE: June 2, 2021- In December of 2020, Stewart suffered a ruptured disc and has spinal surgery. It left him unable to walk, but now that he is healed, he is doing therapy and regaining strength and starting to walk. Right now, Stewart is special needs and has wheels to help him. He will need a special home that can handle special needs and continue therapy so he can fully walk again.  Stewart is an 11 year old Beagle. Stewart came to us emaciated, but he is now healthy and ready to be adopted! Stewart needs a home that will be patient and work with him on house training and socializing. Stewart is good with dogs his size and prefers female companions over males. He also needs a fenced yard where he cannot escape, and his “beagle nose” get him into trouble. He would not do well in a subdivision, apartment, or townhome. He is very vocal so a place with a little more land would be more suitable. If you would like to make Stewart a part of the family, fill out an application at www.barktownrescue.org  STEWART'S ADOPTION FEE IS $170The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Story
Buddy will be 4 years old on X-mas day. We got him from a disabled man who was overwhelmed with buddy's training and housebreaking. We thought we could handle him, since we have had animals all our lives. I have never surrendered an animal in my life before, so this is not something I take lightly. I have tried the past 2 years to train and teach buddy how to behave, and I was not successful. Now in the past 2 years my health has deteriorated, I can no longer work, and have become allergic to dogs. I can no longer afford to care for buddy, nor do I have the strength or energy to do so. I don't want to have to turn him over to a shelter where they will kill him, but the private ones in the area that are no kill are at capacity. I am asking for someone who has no other pets or children, that can give buddy the attention he needs to take him and give him a chance. He is best when he only has 1 owner/handler, and is the center of attention.
