If so, Akiro might be the perfect addition to your family. Akiro is a sweet, shy boy who has faced more than his share of challenges. This gentle soul needs a special kind of adopter—someone who can provide the time and care required to help him overcome his fears and become the confident, loving companion he’s meant to be. Akiro will thrive best with someone experienced in handling anxious dogs. He needs a patient and understanding approach as he builds trust at his own pace. A calm and steady home environment will help him feel secure, and a predictable routine will make him more comfortable and confident. Positive reinforcement training is crucial for helping Akiro work through his fears. With gentle guidance, he can learn to approach new experiences with greater ease. Building trust with Akiro is a gradual process, so a dedicated owner who is committed to spending quality time with him and introducing him to new things slowly is essential. Once Akiro feels safe, he will reveal his deep affection and loyalty. His gentle nature will shine through as he begins to trust you. He enjoys quiet moments and will thrive in a serene home environment where he can relax and feel at ease. Important Note: Commitment Required Due to Akiro’s sensitive nature and the dedication needed for his development, we are not accepting returns for him. Akiro’s progress is delicate, and it’s essential that he finds a stable, committed home where he can continue his journey without interruption. Akiro needs an owner who is ready to invest in his training and socialization. Moving between homes can disrupt his progress, lead to separation anxiety, and hinder his development. If you’re prepared to offer Akiro a stable and loving environment and are committed to his ongoing growth, we invite you to consider adopting him. Your dedication will play a crucial role in helping Akiro become the confident and happy companion he’s meant to be. __________________________________If you are interested in meeting a dog or cat, we require an adoption application.Apply to adopt at: www.nerdypaws.org Nerdy Paws Animal Rescue is a foster based rescue in Springfield, VA. We do not have a shelter, all of our animals are in foster homes. We require all potential adopters to fill out an application before setting up a meeting with the animal and their foster family. Story
Despite her rough start, nothing keeps Phoenix down. At just eight months old, she was abandoned — pregnant and scared — on an elderly man’s property in Corpus Christi, Texas. Rescued just 24 hours before giving birth, Phoenix, still a puppy herself, raised her litter and sent them on their way. Now, she says it’s her time to shine. Today, Phoenix is finally getting the chance to just be a young dog. She’s smart, affectionate, and full of life. Whether it's running, hiking, playing with toys, or just hanging out with her people, Phoenix throws her whole heart into it. She’s crate trained, house trained, and a total cuddle bug when she’s not out exploring. Phoenix gets along great with other dogs of all ages and sizes. Cats, however, are a different story — she’s made it clear she has no interest in becoming friends. True to her breed, she’s a quick study who loves a challenge and would thrive in an active home that keeps both her body and mind engaged. Phoenix is now on her way to North Carolina, where she’ll be looking for the family she’s waited her whole young life to find — someone who will match her energy, appreciate her heart, and finally give her the safe, loving home she's been patiently waiting for.

Story
Meet Channing! Channing is a vibrant and playful pup just over 4 years old, looking for a loving forever home. Adopted from our rescue four years ago, Channing has grown into an energetic companion who loves to play catch and run around the yard. He would thrive in a home with a fenced yard where he can enjoy plenty of playtime and outdoor adventures. Channing is the perfect match for a family that enjoys an active lifestyle and can provide him with regular exercise. We were told he loves other dogs; however, since he has been in the kennel environment, he does not appear to be dog friendly. He is kid friendly though. He would love the company of older children to play with. When he's not running around, Channing is incredibly affectionate and will let you know when he wants some love and attention. He's also a pro at cozying up at the end of the bed or next to you on the couch while you watch TV or read a book. Channing is house-trained, responds well to basic commands like sit and stay, and is up to date on his vaccinations. He's also neutered and ready to be your loyal companion. With his loving personality and zest for life, Channing is a wonderful dog with so much love to give. If you're looking for an energetic, affectionate, and playful dog to join your family, Channing might just be the perfect fit! Complete our online application at animalfriendsva.org and we'll arrange a meet and greet to see if he's the one you've been looking for.

Story
Meli is a loving, energetic, and playful dog who was rescued from a shelter in the DC area. Born in July 2023, she is now about a year and a half old and full of life. Unfortunately, due to recent changes in my circumstances, I am no longer able to provide Meli with the care and attention she deserves. I believe she would thrive in a home where she can receive the time, love, and dedication she needs to live her best life. Meli truly is a special companion, and she will bring so much joy to her future family.

Story
Indy is a 3 year old, very loving Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix (75% Mal & 25% German). Indy came to us as a 12 week old puppy and we have been her only owners since. We are having to rehome Indy as we recently had our second born child, have an imminent transfer out of state and have been unable to give Indy the care and physical activity she deserves. Indy is high energy, loves playing fetch. Her bursts of energy need to be followed up by physical activities. She has been 100% house trained since she was 1 yr old and follows basic commands very well. She is very protective of her family and our property and definitely likes being part of "the pack." While she doesn't bark or growl at anyone during a walk, unless approached directly, she will do so if she sees people walking in front of the house or if someone is approaches our fence. She is skiddish with new people but once she trusts you she loves you forever.

These pups are in Fairfax, Virginia too!

Foster Homes Needed! Do you have time and room in your life for a foster dog? http://www.muttloverescue.org/foster.html *****************   Snuggles fetch and food!  What do these things have in common?  Ranger!  These just happen to be his most favorite things!  If you too love puppy snuggles then he’s the guy for you.   After a seemingly never ending game of fetch, Ranger will happily settle down and chill with a chew bone or even better a nap snuggled up next to his favorite person.   Food is up next on his list of faves, which makes him an ideal candidate for training! He loves to learn and picks up new skills so quickly.  All he needs is a new family to continue his education. It’s hard to believe this adorable guy was taken to a shelter in SW VA after being hit by a car and no one claimed him.  After being cleared by a vet he was able to be transferred to Mutts for a chance at a better life!  It’s taken some time for us to really get to know him but after spending quality time in not one, but two foster homes (he’s so popular two foster families are sharing his time!), we’ve discovered what an amazing boy Ranger is! To note, Ranger can be uncomfortable and reactive to some dogs while on leash.  We feel with the right fear free training, time and patience, this can be managed and improved.  Ranger has had some good play sessions with female dogs and was able to coexist in a foster home with calm, female dogs.  At this time it is best for Ranger to live in a single family home with a fenced yard where his interactions around other dogs can be managed.  He is able to go for walks with a plan and lots of treats for distractions.  Trust us when we say this love bug will be worth all the extra effort!  **BECAUSE OF OUR REQUIREMENT FOR A HOME VISIT, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO ADOPT TO HOMES IN THE NORTHERN VA / MARYLAND / DC METRO AREA** We have adoption events EVERY SATURDAY from 12-3 p.m. Please note that not all dogs can attend every event, so if you are interested in meeting a particular dog, please complete a no-obligation application on our website at http://www.muttloverescue.org/application.html OR write to adopt@muttloverescue.org. Upcoming adoption events:   Saturday May 3rd 12 - 3 pm Weber's Pet Supermarket; 11135 Lee Highway; Fairfax     Saturday May 10th 12 - 4 pm Eavesdrop Brewery; 7285 Centreville Rd. Manassas, VA      Saturday May 17th 12-3 pm Weber's Pet Supermarket; 11135 Lee Highway; Fairfax     Saturday May 24th 12 - 3 pm Weber's Pet Supermarket; 2280 Hunnters Wood Plaza; Reston       We are always desperate for foster homes, now more than ever. Story
Introducing, Lucas! Have you ever seen a more handsome pup? We haven't either! But Lucas is more than just a pretty face, he is a wonderful dog as well. Lucas is about a year old and 65 lbs. Sadly, he was left in an outside kennel at a rural shelter skinny and with a neck wound. He tested positive for Heartworm Disease and has finalized his treatment and is now ready to find his forever home. Lucas is a fun loving dog! He is great with other dogs and is having the time of his life running and playing with his foster siblings. He lives for being loved on and is super sweet. If you enjoy taking your dog with you on adventures, Lucas is happy to join and rides very well in the car. Interested in learning more about Lucas? Apply at www.novapetsalive.org/adopt
