Sativa was found on the side of the road. She was a stray who we believe had never had any medical treatment. She had heartworms, and we treated her for that, and now, she is heartworm negative! She is a sweet baby that needs a good home!!!!

Story
Seeking a highly qualified foster or adopter looking for a working or sport dog. Lycan is trained in German, knows bite work, has high ball drive, and was scheduled for euthanasia before we stepped in. Seeing the intelligence behind this dog, we sent him straight to a trainer. They confirmed what we already suspected—someone put real, professional work into him. He reads your hands, responds to commands, and is ready to work. He’s engaged, aware, and looking for direction. Maybe he flunked out of a program. Maybe he got lost. He didn’t have a tag or microchip, so we may never know. While we don’t know his exact breed or mix, some have suggested he may come from KNPV lines. That’s not our area to confirm, but we welcome feedback from those familiar with this type of dog. Aside from his drive, he’s excellent with people. Lycan will give you his paw and roll onto his back the second he meets you. He’s social, confident, and genuinely enjoys interaction. He loves to work. He wants a job. That’s where he’s happiest. Lycan is five years old, about 70 lbs, neutered, heartworm negative, and currently in boarding with a trainer until the right home is found. He’s medium to high drive and currently reactive to male dogs, which is manageable for someone experienced and familiar with dogs like him. We are looking for a specific home: sport, protection, or working, or simply someone who can handle this type of dog. Someone experienced who understands what they’re looking at and actually wants a dog like this. This is not a casual pet. He needs to be engaged and given a job so he can live up to his full potential, because that’s what he truly enjoys. Transport available anywhere in the U.S. to approved applicants. Current location: Houston, TX See #Lycan0192 on Facebook for more info.

Story
Meet Ecko – Your New Best Friend! 🐾 Looking for a smart, sweet, and slightly mischievous sidekick? Meet Ecko, a 3-month-old male Malinois puppy with the perfect mix of playful energy and cuddle bug charm! Ecko loves spending time with his sister, Blu, and is happy to follow her lead during adventures. He's a little calmer than his sister, making him the perfect balance of fun and snuggly. After a good play session, he's always ready to curl up for cuddles. This handsome boy is already off to a fantastic start! He's crate trained, sleeps through the night, is doing great with potty training, knows his name, and comes when called. He's food motivated (treats are definitely the way to his heart!) and eager to learn. Ecko is a toy enthusiast, especially when it comes to large balls and sturdy toys. He also has one adorable quirk—you may occasionally find your socks or shoes mysteriously relocated thanks to this lovable little bandit! 😂 He's been unfazed by neighborhood cats, making him a confident and curious pup. His biggest "enemy"? The vacuum cleaner. His favorite TV show? The American Dog Show, which he watches with surprising enthusiasm! If you're looking for a loyal, intelligent puppy who's ready to grow into an amazing companion, Ecko could be the perfect addition to your family. Ecko is available for adoption through Second Start Rescue. Give this sweet boy the loving home he deserves, and you'll gain a best friend for life! ❤️

Story
Meet Kuzco! Kuzco is a vibrant and playful pup looking for a loving forever home. Kuzco was adopted from our rescue as a puppy and returned four years later because the "kids didn't have time for him." Kuzco has grown into an energetic companion who loves to play catch and run around the yard. He would thrive in a home with a fenced yard where he can enjoy plenty of playtime and outdoor adventures. Channing is the perfect match for a family that enjoys an active lifestyle and can provide him with regular exercise. We were told he loves other dogs; however, since he has been in the kennel environment, he seems particular with his dog friends. He is kid friendly though. He would love the company of older children to play with. When he's not running around, Kuzco is incredibly affectionate and will let you know when he wants some love and attention. He's also a pro at cozying up at the end of the bed or next to you on the couch while you watch TV or read a book. Kuzco is house-trained, responds well to basic commands like sit and stay, and is up to date on his vaccinations. He's also neutered and ready to be your loyal companion. With his loving personality and zest for life. Kuzco is a wonderful dog with so much love to give. If you're looking for an energetic, affectionate, and playful dog to join your family, Kuzco might just be the perfect fit! Complete our online application at animalfriendsva.org and we'll arrange a meet and greet to see if he's the one you've been looking for.

Story
My daughter agreed to take Zora from a rescue but then had some personal setbacks which forced her to give up the dog. Zora tried to climb a fence and got her paw cut by chicken wire, and I agreed to take her while she was healing. She is a beautiful, protective, 3 year old Belgian Malinois with perfect markings and I immediately established a bond with her. Unfortunately, I am too old to keep her and I cannot offer her the life she deserves. She is extremely active, playful and is always by my side, which prevents me from doing the things I need to do. She is also very protective, she does not like strangers or even relatives, and she will bark and growl at people if they get too close. It does not appear that she has had any professional training, and I believe that would help her to respond better to people. She is spayed so cannot be bred. I really love this dog, but she deserves a better life than I can offer her.

Story
-ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 75lbs -ESTIMATED AGE: 3 years -KNOWN WITH DOGS: Lilly previously lived with dogs but we are still learning more about her dog social skills. -KNOWN WITH CATS: Lilly is said to have high prey drive so prefer a home with no cats or small animals. -KNOWN WITH KIDS: Lilly was in a previous foster home with teenagers and did well. -KNOWN CUES: Unknown -KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING: Lilly is crate trained and housebroken. -KNOWN LIKES: Playing with toys, the hose and cuddling with her people. -KNOWN DISLIKES: ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Meet Lilly – A Mother Who Deserves Her Happily Ever After If there were ever a dog who deserved a soft place to land, it's Lilly. This beautiful shepherd has been through more in her few years than any dog should ever have to endure. Before coming into rescue, much of Lilly's life revolved around raising puppies. By the time she arrived at Homeward Trails, she had already welcomed three litters into the world. Her most recent puppies were surrendered alongside her when they were only a week old. For much of her life, Lilly was valued for what she could provide to others. Now, it's finally her turn. Lilly is currently spending some time at Homeward Trails' farm in Delaplane while she recovers from ringworm. Thankfully, her spots are small, she's responding beautifully to treatment, and she's feeling great. Ringworm is a common and highly treatable skin condition, and Lilly is well on her way to making a full recovery. One of the brightest parts of her recovery has been her friendship with another young shelter dog, Simon, who is also being treated for ringworm. Because they're able to recover together, they've formed the sweetest friendship. They spend their days playing, wrestling, exploring, and reminding each other how much fun it is to simply be dogs. Watching Lilly let loose and play has been incredibly rewarding after everything she's been through. While Lilly and Simon absolutely adore each other, they're not a bonded pair. They're simply two shelter friends who have made each other's recovery a little brighter. Lilly has a wonderful balance of playful energy and gentle affection. She loves spending time with her people just as much as she enjoys romping around with her canine friends. Once playtime is over, she's more than happy to settle in for pets, soak up attention, and enjoy the simple comforts she's gone without for far too long. After years of putting everyone else first, Lilly deserves a family that will finally put her first. One that will show her what it means to be cherished not because of what she can give, but simply because of who she is. Lilly has spent enough of her life being a mother to everyone else. Now it's her turn to be someone's beloved companion. Could you be the one to give this incredible girl the forever home she's been waiting for?
