She takes her role as your shadow very seriously and has no concept of personal space. She will follow you to the bathroom, to the kitchen, to the couch, then onto the couch, then onto your lap, then onto your chest, while making eye contact that says “you are my whole world and also what are you doing and can I help.” Birdy is super smart - she’s defeated every puzzle toy put in front of her and is now waiting for someone to give her a real job. She’s house-trained, comfortable in a crate, and great with other dogs. She’s high energy which is too much for some dogs, but she takes correction well and is quite submissive. At 40lbs she’s the perfect size - manageable enough for an apartment, sturdy enough to keep up with an active lifestyle. She needs an active home (any runners out there?!) with real exercise, not a casual lap around the block. Give her that, and she will be the most loyal, joyful, devoted companion you’ve ever had.The Fine Print: Birdy is jumpy and mouthy - not mean, just deeply enthusiastic about everything. For this reason, she’s not the best fit for a home with young kids (<10yrs) who she may accidentally knock over. She needs someone patient and consistent to work with her on manners. Birdy is also very curious and likes to get into things so she needs to be crated when you aren’t home. She’s completely comfortable in her crate when she hears you leave the house or if you’re in the same room as her, but she does get FOMO if she can hear you but not see you and will whine in those instances. As a result, she does best sleeping in the same room as you (in her crate or on your bed). Connor is one of the lucky dogs participating in our new program Enduring Service! This program pairs a shelter dog with inmates at the Travis State Jail to complete a 12-week basic training course. Upon graduation, they will receive a course certificate of completion and a goodie bag to go home with their adoptive family.Connor is not currently onsite at the shelter but to learn more about him and how to adopt, select the “Get Started” button to hear from a staff member! Connor is a smart, fast-learning pup who loves being around people and other dogs. He enjoys playtime with friends but is just as happy entertaining himself with a favorite rope toy. He is both house trained and kennel trained for day and night, though he may need a little encouragement to go into his kennel. Connor is still very much a puppy, but he's a well-behaved one with a great foundation. He would do best in a home that will continue his training and offer patience as he grows and learns. Toast is a sweet little boy who loves a good scratching session. He is very food motivated, so training is fairly easy. He loves being outside exploring (in a fenced in yard/park) and chasing bugs. He does well in his crate, is mostly potty trained (he has had a few random accidents inside), and mostly knows simple commands such as sit and down. We are still working with him on doing well on a leash, but he does better every time we take him out. He loves to play fetch (he does come back after throwing a toy, but he may not come directly to you). He loves to cuddle when he's ready for a nap, and does well when it's time to wind down at night.
