From the moment his foster family met him at the safehouse, Buddy behaved as though they were lifelong friends who had finally been reunited. He skipped the awkward adjustment period entirely and settled into their household as if he had lived there all along. Friendly, funny, affectionate, and wonderfully adaptable, Buddy knows exactly what each moment calls for. If the kids want to play, he is ready for action. If the adults are relaxing, he is happy to cuddle. If homework is happening, he settles nearby for a nap. His foster family describes him as the perfect combination of energetic playmate and cozy couch companion. Seize the Day—Preferably at 6:00 A.M. After sleeping soundly through the night, Buddy wakes around 6:00 a.m. with a full supply of enthusiasm. His first order of business is waking his foster brother to announce that another wonderful day has arrived. Once Buddy has personally greeted everyone in the family, he heads through the doggy door to take care of his morning business in the backyard. Breakfast follows, along with a morning walk on weekends. During the week, he usually saves his walk for after dinner. Buddy spends the day hanging out with his foster family and occasionally stepping outside for a little sunbathing. He eats dinner between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. and then joins the family for the evening. At bedtime, Buddy heads to his foster brother’s room and chooses between his own dog bed and the human bed. Either way, he settles comfortably and sleeps through the night. The Right Buddy for Every Mood Buddy is an enthusiastic cuddler who considers personal space more of a suggestion than a firm rule. He loves curling up beside his foster mom on the couch and snuggling with his foster brother at bedtime. He enjoys staying close to his people, but he is strategic about choosing his company. When he wants quiet affection, he seeks out the household’s best cuddler. When he is ready to play, he finds the person most likely to join the fun. Buddy has an impressive ability to read the room and match the energy around him. On his very first day in his foster home, Buddy met a group of adults and children. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, he thrived on the attention and happily made friends with everyone. He has since spent time with children ranging from approximately 7 to 14 years old and has been wonderful with them. Walk This Way Buddy has excellent leash skills and enjoys his neighborhood walks. He may occasionally move a little ahead, but a gentle correction brings him right back beside his person. He does not chase squirrels or bark at people and dogs. Buddy notices other dogs but does not react to them. If his attention lingers, he responds well to “leave it” and continues on his way. He has not interacted with dogs or cats off-leash in his foster home, so his compatibility with resident animals is currently unknown. Household MVP Buddy appears to be fully housetrained and has not had a single accident in his foster home. Within about five minutes of arriving, he figured out the doggy door and immediately began using it independently whenever he needed to go outside. He is generally quiet. His foster has heard him bark only a couple of times when someone appeared to be on the other side of the backyard fence. Otherwise, barking has not been an issue. Buddy has not shown any interest in digging. There was one unfortunate encounter involving a flip-flop, so tempting shoes should be kept out of reach. He responds well when redirected to appropriate chew toys and rawhide-free chews. The Great Escape Buddy is not a fan of being confined in an exercise pen. His foster family tried their usual pen setup, but Buddy promptly demonstrated his athletic ability by jumping over it. When they returned home, they did not find chaos or destruction—they found Buddy peacefully napping on the couch. Buddy has only been left alone for a few hours at a time, so his future family should gradually help him adjust to longer absences. Based on his foster experience, he seems able to settle comfortably when given access to a secure, dog-proofed room rather than an open-topped pen. He rode calmly in a crate on the drive home from the safehouse, although his foster family does not currently use a crate in the house. Buddy’s Best Match Nutty Buddy would thrive with a family that enjoys variety. He wants people who will play with him, take him for walks, appreciate his lively side, and then welcome him onto the couch when it is time to relax. He would especially enjoy a home where he receives plenty of affection and can be part of everyday family life. Whether the plan involves playing with kids, sunbathing in the backyard, strolling through the neighborhood, or sleeping beside his favorite person, Buddy is ready to participate.
