Story
Espresso is a small mixed-breed dog with a deeply complex and heartbreaking background. Her mother has been DNA tested as 53% Boston Terrier, 30% Chihuahua, and 12% Miniature Pinscher, and her reported father is a merle French Bulldog/Chihuahua mix, giving Espresso a strong small-breed genetic foundation.
Born approximately October 2022, Espresso’s early life was marked by neglect and repeated trauma. She was bred during her very first heat cycle to her own father and lived in a junk yard environment before rescue. In that setting, she was never allowed indoors, never treated as part of a family, and never given the comfort or safety a young dog should know. Prior to rescue, she never had a dog bowl to eat from, only ate off the floor from dumped food on the ground.
Despite this, Espresso remained gentle and soft-natured. She was later brought into rescue in a critical condition, heavily pregnant and parvovirus positive. She became a parvo survivor in October 2023, overcoming a life-threatening illness that required intensive, round-the-clock medical care. Her survival was part of a much larger rescue effort involving her entire family line, many of whom were also medically fragile and a sibling who was parvo positive. With constant, round-the-clock care required to save them, her family group was given coffee-themed names
Espresso’s temperament reflects both her past and her resilience. She is shy and reserved, especially in unfamiliar environments. She does not like being picked up or heavily handled unless she chooses to approach and initiate contact. What she offers instead is something quieter and more subtle; trust that is earned slowly, and connection that is steady once it is built.
She is not a high-affection or “velcro” dog, and she should not be expected to become one. Espresso is an independent, sensitive soul who bonds in her own way and at her own pace. She thrives in calm environments with structure, patience, and predictability, and she gains confidence significantly from the presence of other friendly dogs.
In a home with canine companions, Espresso truly comes alive in her own gentle way, running and playing with other dogs, observing her surroundings, and eventually settling in close proximity to her another canine companion. Once she feels safe, she often chooses to quietly sleep at the foot of the human bed, simply happy to be near without pressure or expectation.
She was previously adopted by someone who cared deeply and invested in her well-being, but ultimately misunderstood her nature and wanted a dog she could pick up and kiss and carry around etc.. Efforts to change her reserved personality through excessive handling and anxiety medication did not align with what Espresso actually needed. She is not a dog who needs to be fixed....she is a dog who needs to be understood.
Espresso is house-trained, gentle, and inherently sweet. She will do best in a calm, patient home that understands shy dogs and is willing to let trust develop naturally over time without force. She is an ideal match for adopters with other social dogs (she would not do well without another canine) and a compassionate heart for letting a quiet, overlooked dog finally feel safe. She tends to love women and may bark at men. Due to her scared nature, its imperative for her to have a secure yard. She is 100% potty trained by use of a dog door. If you think you can give Espresso the stability she needs, please do submit an adoption application. We would love to hear from you!
