Story
Introducing Canela, a delightful 2.5-year-old Boxer mix who is eagerly searching for her forever home. Canela's previous owner shared that she has a love for walks, playing fetch, and engaging in a spirited game of tug-of-war. These activities are not only great sources of exercise but also wonderful opportunities for bonding and strengthening the bond between you and Canela. While Canela may initially appear shy when meeting new people at the shelter, she has the potential to come out of her shell and show her true colors once she realizes that she is loved and cared for. Patience, understanding, and a nurturing environment will help Canela build trust and confidence, allowing her personality to shine through.Canela's previous experience living with small dogs suggests that she can coexist peacefully with canine companions of a similar size. Proper introductions and ongoing socialization will be crucial to ensure a harmonious relationship between Canela and any potential furry siblings.Canela's shy nature suggests that a calm and structured environment will be beneficial for her. Consistent positive reinforcement training, coupled with plenty of love and patience, will help her feel secure and develop into a more confident and well-rounded companion. As with any dog, it's important to provide Canela with daily exercise and mental stimulation to keep her physically and mentally healthy. Regular walks, interactive play sessions, and puzzle toys will satisfy her physical and mental needs, while also providing opportunities for positive bonding experiences. If you're ready to open your heart and home to Canela, be prepared for a rewarding journey of trust, love, and companionship. With your love and care, Canela has the potential to blossom into a confident and affectionate family member, bringing joy and happiness to your lives for years to come.I have lived with other dogs, but may be selective with your dog.I find cats a little TOO interesting, best to keep them away.I have lived with children, but may be selective with your kids.If you are interested in this specific animal, please come to the shelter for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30am to 5:30pm. We recommend coming in as early as possible, as adoptions are first-come, first-served.

Story
Petey really is a wonderful, giant puppy! He is sweet, silly, snuggly, and ridiculously cute. He is just about everything that is good in a dog. Petey loves to entertain himself (and others) with his playful attitude and his puppy-like antics. He is a toy addict, and he kindly requests a “new toy allowance” so that he can replenish his stash regularly. He loves to start each day with a happy morning wiggle dance, and he will perform encores throughout the day. Petey is an affectionate fellow. He only gives occasional kisses, but loves to get close to you; nuzzle you; lean; poke at you with his front feet as boxers do; and when he is feeling silly (which is often!), roll around on his back and gently nibble on you. When he’s not being a silly boy, Petey enjoys relaxing by your side and napping (often on his back). He is accustomed to sleeping in bed with a person and snuggling all night. Petey would like somebody who can spend a lot of time with him, and, let’s face it, if Petey’s your pup the feeling will be mutual because he’s just so much fun and sweetness. Petey doesn’t seem to have had much basic training. Truthfully, he can get away without it inside the home because he is an easy, good boy to live with! However, he is overly excited out in the world, on walks, in the car, and seeing new people and animals, so he would benefit from some guidance to help him behave calmly in those situations. He’s a larger-than-average boxer and is a lot to handle when he is overstimulated and excited, which is his default mode out of the home at this time. At this point, meeting people is extremely exciting, but meeting dogs is just too overwhelming for him to handle. Outside the home he’s comfortable only in very low-traffic environments. Petey had a dramatic entrance into rescue, as he was pulled from the shelter while he was suffering from bloat (a medical emergency fatal within hours). He’s incredibly lucky to have survived, and he deserves to see his luck continue by finding a forever home as loving and fun as he is! ———————————————————————————————————————————————— Though we were scheduled to pull Petey from the Monterey County shelter on April 1, on March 31 we received an urgent call from the shelter: their vet believed Petey was suddenly bloating and we were asked if we were still willing to pull him and able to do so immediately. Bloat is an emergency situation that is fatal within hours if not treated surgically, and without help, the shelter’s most humane option was to euthanize Petey. Pulling a dog in critical condition, when we know the cost will be tremendous and a good outcome far from guaranteed, requires a leap of faith. But we had faith in you, so we said, “Yes.” Petey’s condition was such that shelter staff was not sure he would survive the trip to the emergency vet, which was NCBR’s only option. The shelter vet bought Petey time by puncturing his stomach to decompress the gas that was building up. Within an hour of first being contacted by the shelter, a flurry of communication had occurred, an NCBR volunteer darted to the shelter, delivered Petey to an emergency vet, and Petey was being prepped for surgery. The low estimate for Petey’s emergency surgery was $7,000, and post-operative care and medication will increase that cost. But we are overjoyed to say that Petey made it through surgery and is now recovering in the hospital.

Story
Frankie (aka Frankenstein & Frank-N-Furter) is an adult male boxer mix complete with soulful brown eyes, Shar-Pei style wrinkles, and a curled smile. Frankie’s love languages are quality time and physical touch. He loves his humans and loves to cuddle, snuggle, and play fetch with his stuffed squeaker toy. Frankie plays well with other dogs (but is selective about his social circle) and enjoys walking with a confident pack leader. We don’t know about Frankie’s past, but he is uncertain about new people, loud/sudden noises, and fast moving objects (i.e. bicycles, runners, kids on swings). In these situations, Frankie barks, whimpers, and pulls on his leash – however, his tail is always wagging. When meeting new people at home, Frankie will bark until greeted and once he gets his proper introduction, Frankie warms up and wants nothing but pets and belly rubs. Frankie is working on his manners – he is highly food motivated and will get into anything smelly that’s not secured. Luckily – he is food motivated! This makes training and coaxing Frankie so much easier. Frankie can be picky about his treats, but once you find his favorite you’re golden! Also physical affection is just as good as a treat in Frankie’s mind. Although Frankie would love nothing more than to snuggle, exercise and play is important to soothe his energy and anxiety levels. He loves to play fetch with his squeaker toys or a ball – Frankie also likes tug of war. Frankie wants to be apart of his family’s life. He will not do well cooped up alone and left to his own devices. An ideal home for Frankie will be willing to train, reassure, and provide him the attention he needs to grow into a secure and confident dog. A home with another emotionally secure dog would be be ideal. Due to Frankie’s energetic nature, uncertainty about new people and behavior on leash, a home with no children or older children is best.

Story
Roscoe is a very chill dog. He will cuddle with you if you let him. Roscoe is happy sleeping at your feet or where he can see you. His people should be prepared to find him silently by their side if they are moving around the house. Be prepared for Mr. Wiggle Butt to appear if he sees the leash in your hand. If you go out in the backyard expect to play with him for at least 20 minutes. He loves to run after toys. Roscoe prefers “meaty treats ” to doggie biscuits. He gets along with the resident dog but has not met other dogs.

Story
Schatzie loves to be held and is very affectionate. She will walk up to you and rest her head on your hand or lap. She is slowly learning how to play catch after watching our resident dog and loves holding a toy in her mouth at all times. Squeaker toys are her jam and there are never too many tennis balls in her opinion. Often times you will find her rolling in the grass and springing back up to all four and ready for the next adventure. She rides well in cars, walks well on a leash and is potty trained. Everyone who meets her says she is an absolute sweetheart. The instant we met, our hearts melted, and could not agree any more.

Story
I got Blair at 6 weeks old in the Walmart parking lot from a questionable looking couple in a motorhome with 2 bins of puppies. She did the petsmart puppy class. She's done some other training classes. I love her so much, she has a lot of potential. She does great at the dog park off leash, but is a bit reactive on leash. Most of the time she gets along with my frenchie, but some days they get into huge fights, I don't know what the trigger is, but it becomes very stressful. She does great with all the teenagers in and out of my house, but is scared and growls at small children, and barks at new adults. She's crate trained and loves going to the vet. She sleeps in my bed at night. She has food allergies, but i have them under control feeding her grain free food mixed with homemade food made with white rice(she's allergic to brown rice). If the adopter lives near is be willing to give homemade food on a regular basis. I love her so much, I wish I had her as my only dog.
