She's affectionate. She's intelligent. She's playful. She's eager to learn. And underneath that big Cane Corso body is still very much a puppy learning how to navigate the world. 🐾 Sage has shown us that she loves people and affection. She also has some unfinished adolescent manners — particularly jumping and mouthing when she becomes excited or overstimulated. Now, thanks to an evaluation by professional trainer Diane Pearl, we have a much clearer understanding of Sage and exactly what she needs to succeed. And Diane sees potential in this young girl. ❤️ 🧠 A PROFESSIONAL TRAINER TAKES SAGE FOR A WALK Diane intentionally took Sage straight from her kennel for a walk without playtime first. Why? She wanted to see how Sage behaved outside while she was still at a high level of excitement. When they first reached the park, Sage jumped twice and attempted to grab the leash. Diane immediately redirected her into a sit. Sage responded. During their walk, Diane frequently called Sage back to her and asked her to sit, helping Sage remain focused and regulated. Again, Sage responded. And Diane discovered something wonderful about training this particular puppy: Affection is a powerful reward for Sage. 💕 She responded so well to praise and petting that Diane hardly needed to use treats at all. Sage did not react to the people or dogs they encountered throughout most of the park. She did show some reactivity when another dog reacted toward her near the play area and again while returning to the kennels. Sage has not yet been formally tested with other dogs, so we cannot make assumptions about dog compatibility. She has also not been tested with cats. ❤️ “SWEET & AFFECTIONATE” Diane's overall impression of Sage was encouraging: “Overall she seems sweet & affectionate & with proper direction & training she should become a nice adult.” That sentence may tell you more about Sage than anything else. She's not a finished dog. She's a puppy in the process of becoming one. 🐶 WHAT THE VOLUNTEERS HAVE SEEN Diane's observations also help put the volunteers' experiences with Sage into perspective. One volunteer recently met Sage for the first time. She was easy to take out of her kennel. Easy to walk. Easy to return to her kennel. When they entered the play yard, Sage didn't immediately race around looking for something to do. Instead, she sat beside the volunteer and covered his face with kisses. 💋🐾 She enjoyed being petted, showed no discomfort with being touched, and happily demonstrated that she already knows “sit.” Another volunteer had a similarly positive experience. Videos have also shown Sage engaging in positive play with people. But when Sage becomes very excited, she can become jumpy, mouthy and overly physical during play. This matters. Sage is already a large, powerful puppy — and she's going to get bigger. 🌱 UNDERSTANDING SAGE'S ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR Diane explained that Sage's jumping and mouthing are typical adolescent behaviors, but because of Sage's size, they need to be addressed immediately rather than allowed to escalate. At 6 months to 1 year, dogs are passing through a critical adolescent developmental stage. They may test boundaries, become easily excited and need especially clear, positive and consistent guidance. That's exactly where Sage is today. She needs to learn how to settle, how to regulate her excitement and what appropriate play with people looks like. And because Sage has already demonstrated that she can be redirected, focused and rewarded with affection, there is a very promising foundation to build upon. 🧠❤️ 🏡 THE HOME SAGE NEEDS Following her professional evaluation, Sage is recommended for an: ADULT-ONLY HOME Her ideal adopter should have experience with Cane Corsos, similar powerful breeds, or young large dogs. Sage needs someone comfortable reading canine body language who can recognize when she is becoming overtired or overstimulated and help her settle before her excitement escalates. Diane recommends giving Sage a predictable routine throughout the day: 🎓 Training 🎾 Play and appropriate exercise 🍽️ Meals 🌳 Potty breaks 😴 Quiet, contained nap time Then repeat. Yes — nap time! Like many adolescent puppies, Sage may become increasingly unruly when she's overtired. Learning how to switch off and rest can be just as important as exercise. Diane recommends crate training, along with an exercise pen or another appropriate containment area where Sage can relax and nap safely without constant stimulation. Sage needs structure. She needs consistency. She needs boundaries. She needs positive training.
