Story
Meet the stunningly gorgeous Opal! At only 8 months old, she hasnt quite grown into her full Cane Corso stature, but she already embodies a true gentle giant. Her breed may look intimidating (shell likely be 90+ pounds as an adult), but shes got a soft, sweet temperament and endless snuggles to give. Opal loves her people and though she gets along with dogs of all sizes, she prefers to be where the humans are. Her current weight of 55 pounds doesnt exactly make for a perfect lap dog but dont tell her that, because your lap is exactly where she wants to be! Shes a low-key couch potato at her core, but enjoys morning and afternoon zoomies in the yard and unstuffing all toys with a squeaker. In her foster home, she has shared space with cats and chickens and while interested in both, she has responded well to gentle correction and would likely be able to live in harmony with them. Like many Cane Corsos, she can be a little slow to warm up with new people and places. Loud and/or unfamiliar noises startle her, and she appreciates patient humans who understand that trust is earned slowly. Once she is comfortable in her environment, her goofy and affectionate side shines through. Shes almost completely house trained, is working on her manners and basic commands, and does short walks on a leash beautifully. She can do short stints in her crate (and does sleep there at night) but shed prefer to be at your feet or on your bed! Opal is very agile and athletic and can easily jump over shorter fences, usually seeking out her humans, so a large, fenced (minimum 5) yard is a must. She would thrive in a calm home and has the potential to be an excellent office companion she requests a soft bed and chew toy to keep her occupied while you work! Adopters with large breed experience are preferred. Opal is in foster in Longmont, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/opal You can apply for our wonderful dogs at https://www.milehighcanine.org/adopt/adoption-application/.

Story
Hi I'm Mable! I came to the shelter with my 3 other siblings. Our mom was a Blue Heeler mix and our dad was a Cane Corso mix- so I'll likely be a medium sized girl but with the great personality mix of the two breeds! I'm a little shy as I haven't had much experience in this world but I'm sweet and willing to learn it with you! Give a sweet girl like me a chance and take me home.  If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2744925##

Story
Gina is a real sweetie! She is very playful and extremely loving and affectionate once she gets to know you, she just wants to be right by your side. She is great off leash on our farm. She has done wonderful with all the dogs she has been around. She was raised with cats as well but sometimes she will still try to chase them a little bit. She is pretty protective of whoever she is bonded with, but if I'm around I can get her to trust people pretty quickly, especially with treats. She will probably take a few meet and greets before she can actually go home with someone new to get used to them. She is a barker outside so we use a bark collar and then she is silent. She is crate trained and potty trained. We had her DNA tested and she is 80% Neapolitan Mastiff and 20% Cane Corso Mastiff. She just turned 1-year-old on April 17th. She doesn't chew up much but she is a counter surfer. Overall she is pretty easy for a puppy that will need a special person. She has not really ever been around kids much. I'm sure she could get used to them but right now she doesn't know anything about them. Please email if you're interested and tell us about yourself. No apartments. She will be spayed before she goes to a new home but we didn't do it early because of her being a large breed and needing time to grow with her hormones for her joint health.

These pups are in Denver, Colorado too!

Story
Ilona is as sweet as she is smart. Named after rugby star, Ilona Maher, she’s both beautiful and—like any Anatolian Shepherd mix—strong. She already knows basic commands, is house trained, and sleeps through the night in her crate. Ilona loves her people, and her favorite place is right next to you on the couch. When she’s not playing with her foster brother or other dogs, she’s happy to relax, soak up attention, and enjoy a good snuggle. She’s excited to learn about the world and is happiest when she’s getting pets, giving kisses, and spending time with her favorite humans. ##2764613##

Story
Zen is a 6-year-old male Neo Mastiff mix who’s as big-hearted as he is big in stature. Rescued from a shelter after his previous owners surrendered him for being “too big,” Zen is now on the hunt for his forever home where he can truly shine. Zen is a sweet, playful giant with a lot of energy for his breed. He’s very intelligent and learns quickly, making him a joy to train. However, Zen prefers to be the only dog in the home; he can get jealous and aggressive with other dogs, wanting all the attention for himself. When he's your one and only, he’s incredibly loving and will shower you with affection. Though he’s not reactive to other dogs on leash, Zen does best in a home without canine companions. He appreciates careful introductions to new people, especially those who approach unexpectedly. Zen’s ideal owner will be someone experienced with his breed and capable of continuing his training and socialization. If you’re ready to welcome a devoted and energetic companion into your life, Zen could be the perfect fit. He’s looking for a loving home where he can be the center of attention and enjoy all the love he has to give!

Story
Hazel is a 1-year-old Anatolian Shepherd (with a lot of Central Asian Shepherd Dog mixed in!) with a big heart to match her 100-pound frame. She’s a sweet, affectionate, and deeply people-oriented dog who forms strong bonds with her humans. While she may be a bit shy when first meeting new adults, a little patience (and a few treats) go a long way—once she feels safe, she becomes a loyal shadow, full of happy wiggles and constant companionship. She’s been especially gentle and wonderful with kids in her foster home. Hazel has a medium-high energy level and thrives when she can spend time outdoors. She loves walks, sniffing adventures, chasing squirrels, and playing or wrestling with other dogs. Toys are a favorite pastime—especially socks—and she has a hilarious fondness for water, often trying to join her humans in the shower. New indoor environments can make her anxious, and she is not comfortable in a crate, as it causes her stress. She’s also an alert barker and may react to unfamiliar noises or bark at night, though white noise or a fan can help soothe her. Medically, Hazel is prone to chronic ear infections and will require ongoing care, including ear cleanings once or twice a week. Hazel would do best with a patient and understanding family who can give her time to decompress and feel secure. A home that can accommodate separate feeding if there are other dogs, and one that is comfortable with basic ear care, will set her up for success. Access to a yard or outdoor space would be a big bonus for her active nature. At her core, Hazel is an extremely loving and loyal companion who just wants to be close to her person. With the right environment and a little patience, she will blossom into an incredibly devoted best friend.
