Story
Meet Ozzie, the adolescent Chihuahua Basenji mix. Ozzie came to the Shelter with his “sister” Harriet (who has already been adopted!). We don’t know much about his life before the Shelter as he was a stray. Staff have observed that although a little worried, he is a gentle guy who warms up to people. Ozzie has met a variety of other small sized dogs and has been quiet and amiable. We do not have any history of Ozzie with cats or children. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Minnie! This little gal came to the Shelter due to no fault of her own – her adoptive guardian was allergic to her. She has been around a 4 year old child in a previous home and did well with strangers whom she has met. At the Shelter, Minnie has been a bit shy but is warming up to staff and volunteers. Minnie had some interaction with a small breed dog in a previous home and did well. Allowing her to decompress as she transitions into the next home will be helpful to see her true personality shine. Despite being a small size, she enjoys going for walks and smelling everything. She is still perfecting potty training but is making great progress. She has been described as treat motivated and will sit for a treat. She has some experience with a guardian who was using a wheelchair and Minnie got the hang of walking with her and navigating the wheelchair. Minnie`s favorite toys in her previous home are squeaky toys and her Lamby! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Meet Zipper, the adult chihuahua! Zipper arrived to the Shelter with three other similarly looking dogs as strays found outside the Target parking lot in Capitola. Despite being a bit nervous upon entry, Zipper has warmed up to staff and volunteers since his arrival. Zipper may enjoy a home with other animals with a slow, thoughtful introduction. Because of Zipper’s adventure at Target, we would recommend any adopters have Zipper safely contained and supervised in an enclosed yard when outdoors or on leash to keep him safe.
