Story
Meet Courage, the little chocolate chihuahua! Courage arrived at the Shelter with their 8 other friends. Their previous guardian had too many pups and, despite really great intentions to help, felt a bit overwhelmed caring for them all. At this time, Courage is a bit of a cowardly little guy but we named him Courage to inspire him in his next steps of adoption. His previous guardian reported that Courage is social with people and other dogs (small and large). A home with a confident, playful dog may be a fit for Courage. Cats may be appropriate with a slow, thoughtful introduction. He enjoyed walking on leash and playing. At the Shelter, we have not necessarily seen that and Courage is generally timid. We anticipate that Courage will start to blossom in a patient, dog-savvy home environment after adoption. If you would like to be a part of a transformation after adoption and have some extra love in your heart to give a dog – consider meeting Courage today. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Estrellita, the chihuahua! Although she is a senior technically, Estrellita is still a spunky, active girl. She came to the Shelter by no fault of her own – her previous guardian’s landlord said that she was unable to have her any longer. Estrellita has lived with two small poodles and a couple of cats, who she got along fine with. She can be nervous with new people but warms up and is a social gal who enjoys sitting on laps and soaking up attention. She was house trained in the previous home. Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
Meet Mickey, the little miniature pinscher x chihuahua mix! Mickey came to the Shelter after his previous family was unable to continue caring for him and wanted to find him a great home. Mickey has lived with other dogs around his size (and larger) and got along. He also would meet dogs out on walks and enjoyed saying hello. He has some experience with a cat that lived outdoors and coexisted. Kids 5 and older would come to visit at Mickey’s previous home and he did great with them. Mickey has been a bit nervous here but we anticipate that after a transition to his adoptive home, he will relax and settle in. Mickey primarily lived outdoors in his previous home so he is still perfecting house training. Client services staff can give adopters some tips on ways to start off potty training in his new home at adoption! Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
Weight: 18lbsMeet Sammy. Sammy is a ~2 year old Chihuahua mix who is searching for a calm, patient, and experienced home where she can truly feel safe. New people can be overwhelming for her, and she does best when introductions are slow, predictable, and on her terms. As she’s grown more confident, Sammy has shown us that clear boundaries and gentle handling are very important to her.Once she knows you and feels secure, Sammy can be incredibly sweet, loyal, and loving. She’s the kind of dog who forms deep bonds and thrives with consistency. Sammy will need behavioral support, ongoing training, and multiple meet-and-greets to ensure a successful match, as well as an adopter who is committed to using positive reinforcement and giving her the time she needs to build trust. If you’re someone who enjoys helping a dog grow and blossom and are open to putting in the work, Sammy could be a truly rewarding companion. To learn more about Sammy and what she’ll need in her new home, please call our adoptions desk—we’d love to help see if she’s the right fit for you. We`re open Tues-Sun 11am-5pm.
