Story
WEIGHT: ~22lbs.Meet Marley. Marley came to us from our friends over at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter so if you thought that you recognized him from over there, you would be right! While in their care he spent time in a foster home, and they reported that he warms up quickly and that once he knows you, he just wants to follow you around and jump in your lap. They noted that once comfortable he becomes quite confident and can even be a little bit bossy, so he will need a savvy adopter who is ready to dedicate time to proper training and boundary setting. Since he has been here with us, shelter staff have noted that he has a tendency to exhibit some cheeky puppy-like behaviors such as mouthing and jumping and that he can be a little sensitive to handling so an adult household would likely be best for him. He is liable to chase cats and other small animals, but a home with another dog may be a fit for him provided they meet first at the shelter. He may look like every other tan chihuahua, but he's got personality out the wazoo, and he'll make someone a great little dog. If you think that you might be his person, fill out an Adopters Profile, call the shelter to schedule a meet and greet, or stop by during Browsing Hours Wed-Sun 11-5!

Story
WEIGHT: ~12lbs.Meet Coconut- Coconut came to us from a partner shelter with her friend Cheeky. Little Coco is most definitely the more reserved of the two, but she has slowly been coming out of her shell and opening up to staff and volunteers. Coconut would likely do well in a quiet home without much on the agenda outside of curling up with a good book for a good nap. She lived with other dogs in her previous home, though she was ruler of the roost in that environment, so intentional introductions to new dogs would be a must. Do you have a hole in your life that only a senior Chihuahua can fill? If so, call our adoptions desk or feel free to stop by the shelter during Browsing Hours: Wed-Sun 11-5.

Story
"I pity the fool" that misses out on this little guy! Mr.Chi is a pint sized cutie on the lookout for his next snuggle buddy. He loves to lay by your feet in his bed, or use his adorable little feet to get your attention for scratches. He loves to snuggle in bed with you, and will root around under the covers until he finds a comfy spot - often with his head on your shoulder. He is enjoying the beginning of his golden years and has the sweet, mellow disposition to prove it. He likes to tell new people what's what with his signature macho man bark (okay so it's more endearing than terrifying but you get the idea) but once he settles down he is a quiet and calm companion with a MAJOR goofy side. He does great with other dogs and is neutral even if they are a little less so with him - he is happy to do his own thing as long as he can still get snuggles from his person. So if you're looking for a mellow snuggler to be your personal action hero, come down and meet Mr.Chi!*UPDATE* Mr. Chi is a confirmed slumber party super star! Here is what his hosts had to say:"Mr. Chi is a polite house guest who handled out resident dog's initial pushyness with grace and style. He happily went potty outside and slept through the night under the covers with no accidents. Although he is vocal at the shelter he did not make a peep at home, aside from some happy grunts and tiny snoring. He followed me around the house wagging his tail and supervising our evening activities. He enjoyed sniffing around outside, and with a little refresher course could easily take to full potty training - belly bands worked perfectly for the one or two times he did lift his leg indoors. He completely ignored our cat, even when the cat didn't ignore him. All and all Chi Chi is an easy dog to have in the home, he just has to get comfortable with his human first and then he is an amazingly sweet and snuggly companion!"

Story
WEIGHT: ~7lbs.Meet Mr. Crumb- Somewhere out there someone is singing an old folk tune about Mr. Crumb. He's King of a land far far away and lords over his people, the Crumb people, with an authority that no one dares question. At least, this is the tale that he tells. We've tried to remind him that he no longer lives in that place, he lives in Santa Cruz among mere mortals now, but he won't hear it. The transition from King to shelter dog has been a tough one for him. He can get frustrated when things don't go his way or when he's asked to do something that he doesn't want to do. He's got some handling sensitivities, so he'll need a quiet home with an understanding dog-savvy adopter and plenty of decompression time. Think you've got what it takes to help Mr. Crumb to rebuild his kingdom? If so, call our adoptions desk Wed-Sun 11-5.

Story
Chloe is a ~8yo, 15lb longhair cutie pie. She was born with front deformed paws, but gets around fine on one of her front feet, so basically she’s a tripod. She’s comfortable being carried when needed, and also enjoys short strolls in the grass. She ended up in our rescue from a horrific high profile hoarding case, but despite all she’s been through, is a very stable and sweet girl. She  is great in and likes her nap time in her crate and is housebroken. It seems like she’d be fine in a home with cats, and although she can learn to co-exist with another dog, would probably be happiest as an only dog (or with a dog that ignores her and gives her space). Kids 13+ would be fine. She’d be perfect for someone retired too. If you’re looking for a sweet, quiet, easy keeper, adorable companion, look no further! She deserves the best home ever with what she’s been through!  Please contact Diana at (510) 333-4420 or theperfectdogrescue@gmail.com or fill out the adoption application:  http://www.theperfectdog.org/TPDadoptapp.doc April 17, 2024, 3:26 pm
