Story
Meet Minnie! This little gal came to the Shelter due to no fault of her own – her adoptive guardian was allergic to her. She has been around a 4 year old child in a previous home and did well with strangers whom she has met. At the Shelter, Minnie has been a bit shy but is warming up to staff and volunteers. Minnie had some interaction with a small breed dog in a previous home and did well. Allowing her to decompress as she transitions into the next home will be helpful to see her true personality shine. Despite being a small size, she enjoys going for walks and smelling everything. She is still perfecting potty training but is making great progress. She has been described as treat motivated and will sit for a treat. She has some experience with a guardian who was using a wheelchair and Minnie got the hang of walking with her and navigating the wheelchair. Minnie`s favorite toys in her previous home are squeaky toys and her Lamby! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Sherbert, the chihuahua terrier mix. Sherbert came into the Shelter as a stray so we do not know much about his life before now. Staff have observed hat he took some time to warm up but after a couple meet ‘n greets with a new person – is excited to see them, tail wagging and jumping around. He has been food motivated as well, which is a great tool for desensitizing him to new people. Sherbert has an endearing underbite and a little snaggle tooth. He has met another small sized female chihuahua and was a little hormonally focused. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption to ensure everyone is jiving. Meet Zipper, the adult chihuahua! Zipper arrived to the Shelter with three other similar looking dogs as strays found outside the Target parking lot in Capitola. Despite being a bit nervous upon entry, Zipper has warmed up to staff and volunteers since his arrival. Zipper may enjoy a home with other animals with a slow, thoughtful introduction. Because of Zipper’s adventure at Target, we would recommend any adopters have Zipper safely contained and supervised in an enclosed yard when outdoors or on leash to keep him safe. Velcro could be adopted with his brother Zipper but is not required to be. If adopted together, their fee would be 2 for 1. Story
Weight: 18lbsMeet Sammy. Sammy is a ~2 year old Chihuahua mix who is searching for a calm, patient, and experienced home where she can truly feel safe. New people can be overwhelming for her, and she does best when introductions are slow, predictable, and on her terms. As she’s grown more confident, Sammy has shown us that clear boundaries and gentle handling are very important to her.Once she knows you and feels secure, Sammy can be incredibly sweet, loyal, and loving. She’s the kind of dog who forms deep bonds and thrives with consistency. Sammy will need behavioral support, ongoing training, and multiple meet-and-greets to ensure a successful match, as well as an adopter who is committed to using positive reinforcement and giving her the time she needs to build trust. If you’re someone who enjoys helping a dog grow and blossom and are open to putting in the work, Sammy could be a truly rewarding companion. To learn more about Sammy and what she’ll need in her new home, please call our adoptions desk—we’d love to help see if she’s the right fit for you. We`re open Tues-Sun 11am-5pm.

Story
Weight: 17lbsMeet Sparky! Sparky is a 5-year-old Chihuahua mix who joined us from a partner shelter. While his background mostly unknown, his paperwork states that he came to them as an owner surrender, so we can assume that he has spent at least some time in a home environment. He has shown himself to be a pretty cool guy who enjoys getting out for walks and does great on a leash. Recently he went on a doggy-day-out with an awesome volunteer. Here is what they had to say about him: `Just a quick update on my DDO with Sparky. He was the best boy!! Calm, super easy in the car, a bit unsure at the beach, seems to not know about the ocean! He was interested in other dogs and children but no barking and did not approach, just observed them with ears up and wagging tail. He was super relaxed after the initial nervousness, very easy going dog.`Sparky is ready to find a home where he can settle in and enjoy the good life with a loving family. Call us to schedule a meet & greet with him! We`re open Tues-Sun 11am-5pm.
