Story
Meet Chita, the chihuahua mix! Chita came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was going through some medical troubles and was unable to continue caring for her. She arrived at the Shelter with another dog (Nina) whom she could go to a home with but is not required to be adopted with. She lived in a home previously with teens, women and seniors. Chita can be nervous with new people but warms up with some patience. Her favorite activities in her previous home were playing, running and sleeping. Along with living with Nina, Chita has been around two other dogs whom she enjoyed playing with. A home with a canine friend may be a fit in the future after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter, although she is reported to be nervous of new dogs, particularly large sized ones. She has lived with dog-savvy felines and even shares a bed with them occasionally. She knows “sit” and “come here” and does well riding in the car. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
We'll also keep you updated on NINA's adoption status with email updates.

She arrived at the Shelter with another dog (Chita) whom she could go to a home with but is not required to be adopted with. She lived in a home previously with teens, women and seniors. Her previous guardian reports that she did well with children. She would take naps when left alone for a couple hours a day free roam and is pee-pad trained. Story
Weight: 7.2lbsMeet Comet! Comet is a 9-month-old Chihuahua mix with a heart as big as his snuggles. He came to us from a partner shelter, so we don’t know much about his past—but it’s clear he’s a sweet, cuddly, and gentle soul who’s ready for a fresh start. This little guy is on the timid side and is still learning about the world. He hasn’t had much experience being outside or walking on a leash yet, so his future family should be ready to help him build confidence with patient, positive training. He’ll likely need some potty training as well—but with consistency and love, Comet is sure to shine. What he does know already? How to be a top-tier snuggle bug. Comet loves being close, soaking up affection, and showing off just how super cute he is. Meet Comet Tuesday–Sunday, 11am–5pmIf you’re looking for a loving little companion to grow with, Comet might just be your perfect match.

Story
Meet BUDDY True to his name, Buddy is everyone’s best friend. This affectionate, eager-to-please pup is always excited to see you—he wiggles with his whole body when you call his name! He is shy at first but so very sweet, he's playful, and just a little bit goofy, making him the perfect addition to any family looking for a happy companion. Buddy would thrive in a home with another friendly, confident dog to help show him the ropes, or with someone who has the time and heart to help him continue learning how wonderful life can be. Buddy gets along well with other dogs and is doing great with his socialization. He’s working on his leash skills and learning quickly. With continued love, structure, and patience, Buddy will grow into the most loyal family dog. If you're interested in meeting Buddy, please visit www.aarflove.org to review our adoption process and submit an application. Rescue dogs thrive with patience, structure, and lots of love—and in return, they give you a lifetime of quiet loyalty and gratitude. Please note: We receive many wonderful applications and may not be able to respond to everyone. If we feel you might be a match, we’ll reach out directly. Thank you for supporting rescue!
