Story
The game of chess is all about strategy. This Chess’ strategy is pretty simple: to find an adoptive home. Although small and cute, Chess is looking for the right home environment to match his needs. As a bit of a sensitive guy, Chess is required to live in an adults only home. He does not appreciate sudden, unexpected handling or people attempting to take his favorite items (like treats, toys and chews). Resource guarding is manageable in a home environment provided adopters set up the environment and read their dog’s body language, especially when the dog has high value items. Shelter staff can discuss resource guarding and management with any potential adopters. In a previous home, Chess was afraid of felines. Other dogs are more his speed so a home with a dog-friend may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Chess is looking or a patient adopter that will help him transition to his adoptive home and blossom. Could that be you? The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Buddy Buddy is as loyal and loving as his name suggests. He’s the kind of dog who wants to be your constant companion, your shadow, and your very best friend. Wherever you go, Buddy will happily follow, just to be near his person. Buddy is a true survivor with a big heart. His foster lovingly calls him a “Friday dog” — a perfectly unique mix of everything. Buddy is one-of-a-kind personality. This sweet boy lives for the simple joys in life: chasing squirrels in the yard, keeping watch for “intruders,” and curling up next to you at night. He’s fully house-trained with a doggy door and zips in and out all day like it’s his full-time job. Buddy can be a little sensitive, especially in new situations. Car rides still make him nervous, but he settles once he’s in and is happy to join you on outings like walks at the beach. He’s currently working on his leash skills and does great using a gentle leader, staying close and connected to his handler. He would thrive in a home with another friendly, young-ish dog to help boost his confidence and give him a playmate. That said, Buddy could also do well as an only dog in a home where someone is around most of the time — he truly just wants companionship and love. With patience, structure, and a whole lot of affection, Buddy will reward his person with unwavering loyalty and devotion. He’s the kind of dog who forms a deep bond and will be right by your side through everything. If you’re looking for a sweet, unique, and deeply devoted companion, Buddy just might be your perfect match. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Seeking a confident partner dog or 2Meet Carlos!  Have you ever seen a more perfect smile? Carlos might just be the cutest Chihuahua in Silicon Valley, and he’s officially ready to find his true forever home! Carlos originally came from a 20-dog hoarding case in Fresno. While his start in life was overwhelming, the silver lining is that he spent all of his time surrounded by other pups, turning him into an absolute expert at canine companionship. Because of his past, the shelter environment was really scary for Carlos, and he can still be a bit fearful at first. However, his foster family has discovered his secret: Carlos warms up beautifully to anyone who uses a quiet, gentle approach. Once he knows he is safe, his sweet, resilient personality completely shines. He is realizing that laps are for cuddling and hands are for giving gentle chin scratches. Because Carlos speaks "dog" fluently, his ideal forever home must have another confident small dog or two. He relies heavily on his furry roommates to show him the ropes, boost his confidence, and remind him that he's safe. If you have a friendly small dog who loves to mentor other pups, Carlos is ready to be their ultimate sidekick! Want to introduce Carlos to your pack?
