Founded in 2015 by a Kansas City native, Day of the Dogs began after Pam moved to Houston, Texas and witnessed firsthand the devastating shelter overcrowding crisis facing southern communities, where some shelters have only days to find an outcome for homeless pets. Today, Day of the Dogs coordinates life-saving transports from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other southern areas to rescue partners, shelters, fosters, and adopters in Northwest Indiana/Chicagoland and the Kansas City region — communities where adoption demand can help create better outcomes for pets in need. We also focus on long stay dogs in the Greater Kansas City and surrounding rural areas to help those pets get out of kennels and into homes. After literally getting kicked🤯into the streets by the children of his elderly owner when he passed away, a neighbor recognized Schmitty and was able to get him to safety at a local shelter. That’s when ABRA stepped in to promise this sweet soul 😍that he would never face a moment of want ever again. Schmitty is estimated to be about 8 yrs old and is a Chi/Doxie mix. He does have a significant heart murmur, which is not uncommon for his breeds. He is not currently requiring any meds or treatment and has had two EKG done prior to both surgeries and was cleared to proceed. He recently got neutered and had a full dental🦷, losing 9 teeth in the process, but boy does his breath smell 👃🏻 better!! 🤣 Schmitty has never met a soul that he does not like. He is being fostered with 2 small dogs 🐶 and absolutely 💯 loves everyone that comes and goes through the house 🏡. He was a huge hit at our Easter 🐰 celebration, snuggling from lap to lap in a house of 40 strangers. Schmitty is a refined gentleman, he enjoys wearing a bow tie , fully house trained and rarely barks.

Pepper is a 5-year-old neutered male Chihuahua. He is very loved and has been an important part of my family. Unfortunately, circumstances have changed, and I can no longer provide the care he deserves. This is an incredibly difficult decision, because I love him very much, but I want to do what is best for him and make sure he has a loving, safe, and permanent home. I have three Chihuahuas that I need to rehome. Ideally, I would love for them to stay together, but I understand that may not be possible.
