Story
Meet Peanut – Your future sidekick! If you’re looking for a fun-loving, affectionate companion who will keep you smiling every day, Peanut might just be your perfect match. This cutie’s estimated birthday is 9.24.2023. This active, playful pup absolutely loves being around his people. He’ll happily trot over for pets, lean in for cuddles, and soak up all the attention you’re willing to give. One of his cutest quirks? If you pick him up and gently pet his head, he’ll drift right off to sleep—an instant heart-melter. Peanut is potty trained and does well with both men and women. He enjoys the company of other dogs and would love a playful canine companion to romp around with. He doesn’t seem to mind cats, either. He’s always up for an adventure, whether it’s going on walks or chasing after his favorite ball. As a higher-energy pup, Peanut will thrive with an adopter who is committed to continuing his training and keeping him active and engaged. He’s the kind of dog who wants to be part of everything you do and can sometimes be a little vocal or have trouble being alone, so he’ll do best in a home where he gets plenty of attention, interaction, and structure. If Peanut had a job, he’d be your enthusiastic assistant—always by your side, ready to “help” with whatever the day brings (or at least supervise it!). Peanut’s ideal home would include an active household with other playful dogs. He’s sweet, silly, and full of love—just waiting for the right person to make him part of their life. Story
If your idea of a perfect evening involves a warm lap, a cozy couch, and a sweet little soul pressed right up against you — Pokey might be exactly who you've been looking for. This gentle 10-pound guy is everything a lap dog should be: affectionate, calm, and completely devoted to the people he loves. Pokey isn't interested in adventure for its own sake — he just wants to be near you, and he's remarkably good at it. In his foster home, Pokey has been a dream. He's gotten along beautifully with the resident dog and has been calm and gentle around a young child — a testament to his sweet, easygoing nature. He warms up quickly once he feels safe, and the people who know him best describe him as genuinely loving and easy to have around. Like many dogs who've been through change, Pokey is still finding his footing. He can be a little shy when first meeting new people, and stormy weather sends him looking for his person's reassurance. Neither of these things makes him a difficult dog — they just make him a dog who needs someone willing to be his safe place. And honestly? That's a pretty wonderful role to fill. Pokey's perfect home: Patient, calm adults or a quiet household — he'll thrive where the energy is gentle Someone who's home often and wants a true companion dog Dog-friendly home welcome, but not required Kids welcome based on foster experience, particularly older or calm children At 9–10 years old, Pokey has so much love left to give. Senior dogs make some of the most loyal, grateful companions imaginable — and this little guy is no exception. Ready to be Pokey's person? Submit an application today — we'd love to tell you more about him   If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application . Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will be in touch! The adoption fee of $250 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm, and any other necessary medical treatment to ensure a healthy new pup for your family. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Although we do our best to describe the breed, since our pups all come from shelters, we can not and will not make any guarantee on breed or size. We can tell you that they are 100% RESCUED! And that is the BEST breed! *Please note that we are a foster home-based rescue and we do home visits as part of the adoption process - we are unable to adopt to families who live outside of the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Story
Meet Frank—a soft-hearted pup who is learning how to be brave. With an estimated date of birth of August 18, 2025, Frank is the kind of dog whose love is quiet, genuine, and incredibly rewarding. He can be timid when meeting new people and prefers to take his time getting comfortable, but once he trusts you, he transforms into the sweetest companion, happily melting into your lap as if he has always belonged there. Snuggles are definitely his favorite thing. Frank is not a fan of crates, but with patience and understanding, his playful personality begins to shine. One of his greatest joys is racing around the house with his canine friends, ears flopping as he discovers just how fun life can be. He is a smart, eager learner who is already working on commands such as sit, touch, and down. Nothing makes him prouder than realizing he has done something right. Squeaky toys send his tail into overdrive, and a warm lap is his favorite place to feel safe and secure. Frank is looking for a patient, experienced family that understands shy dogs and is willing to give him the time and encouragement he needs to build confidence. A home where someone is present most of the day would be ideal. He would especially benefit from having another confident, social dog to help show him the ropes. A quiet home with a securely fenced yard is required. If you have the patience to help a gentle soul blossom, Frank will reward you with a lifetime of loyalty, affection, and love If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Story
Meet Toby — and try not to fall immediately in love. We dare you. This little chi/terrier mix came into the world on January 1st, 2026, which means he literally started the new year as the gift he is. Petite and delicately featured, with the most adorable permanent white socks on his paws, Toby is the kind of dog who makes strangers stop and say "wait, can I hold him?" Toby arrived at Starfish with his two sisters, and from day one, he was the big brother energy of the group — patient, generous, and quietly making sure everyone was okay. His sisters have since found their forever homes. And Toby? He just kept right on big-brothering. Every foster sibling that comes through the door gets the full Toby treatment: he'll share his toys, yield his favorite nap spot, and generally make whoever is next to him feel like the most important creature in the room. He is, in the most genuine sense, a caretaker. But Toby isn't just sweet with animals — he is absolutely magnetic with people. Call his name and he will drop everything and come find you. Everything. He forms bonds fast and loves hard, and if closeness and affection are what you're looking for in a dog, Toby will absolutely meet you there. He is also — and we say this with full sincerity — almost suspiciously easy. He's doing great with potty training and will find his pee-pads on his own if no one's around to let him out. He plays well with other animals but is just as happy entertaining himself. He listens. He adapts. He considers. Honestly? We're not sure what he did to deserve being this good. We're just glad he's here. Toby will likely top out around 20 lbs. full grown — though we can't make any guarantees on size. He's currently 12 lbs. as of May 18th and is looking for a home with kids ages 6 and older. If you've been waiting for a sign — Toby has white socks, a heart of gold, and he is ready for you If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Story
Meet Scout, an adorable 20lb Terrier/Chi/Cattle Dog type mix who came from local animal control as an unclaimed stray. He is a sweet boy who loves to be with people and receive attention. He knows sit and paw and will happily offer those commands whenever you would like, sometimes even when you are not asking for them. Scout has lots of energy and is working on leash manners. Because of his dog reactivity, he will need some work on walks. A fenced yard would be great for him. He does love to run around and sniff in the grass. He can tend to grab the leash to try to tug or be a little mouthy when he gets excited. He is looking for a home with no children or other pets.

Story
Meet Chewy, a 3-year-old Chihuahua mix, weighing about 13 pounds. He was found as a stray and never reclaimed, so now he is looking for a forever home! Chewy is very nervous and was mortified when he first came to us. He has made tremendous strides, though, and now enjoys pets and hanging out with his people. Chewy will need patience as he adjusts and gets to know you and starts to trust. Fast movements can spook him, but we have made lots of progress as far as leashing/unleashing and petting. He loves to go outside with his people to run around, sniff, and play with squeaky plush toys. He does chase the toys when thrown, but he likes to hold them instead of bringing them back. Chewy has met a few similar sized dogs and done okay. He does tend to match the energy of the other dogs, so if the other dog isn’t a fan, neither is Chewy. He has run around outside in a run next to one of our medium dogs and seemed to get excited when she got the zoomies. We are hoping with time and patience in a home, he will blossom! Chewy is looking for a home without children. It would be beneficial for an adopter to have experience with nervous dogs or finicky chihuahuas.Chewy has some allergies that were causing him to have a lot of skin irritation and upset stomach. He is now on a fish-based diet (Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach- Salmon and Rice) as well as Apoquel, once daily, which helped tremendously. He will need to be on this long term.
