Story
Have you always dreamed of sharing your life with a temperamental yet irresistibly adorable sentient potato? If so, you're in luck! Pal's Place is in the business of making dreams come true and would love to introduce you to Cash! Cash is a senior, curmudgeonly Chihuahua mix seeking new roommates with whom he can spend his golden years. He is estimated to be at least 10 years old and came to us a whopping 21 pounds on legs and a frame built to carry a weight of 11-14 pounds comfortably. His large, expressive eyes tell the story of a little pup who may not have had the easiest time of it the past couple of years. Cash was rescued from an open-intake, overburdened animal control facility in Kentucky, and he was a pitiful, heartbreaking mess. Almost every single toenail was overgrown and curling back into his feet and paw pads, creating large painful sores. The sores, coupled with his obese frame and severely arthritic knees, made walking very difficult and painful for him. Any small amount of physical exertion made breathing difficult, and he was also suffering from hair loss on his back end and severe dental disease. In short, he was an uncomfortable, miserable little fella. Cash has been in the care of Pal's Place for several weeks now. He's already lost 6 pounds, had his hair loss treated (flea allergy), was neutered, and had his infected teeth thoroughly cleaned and scaled with several extractions. The newfound pep in his step and the little spark now seen in his eyes is evidence he's much more comfortable and feeling better physically. Emotionally, he's also showing promising signs and becoming more trusting of his foster human and less reactive. Cash was not the easiest dude to get along with when he first arrived. He was scared, distrustful, and defensive with his foster mom, and understandably so. He's a resiliant, brave, and determined little old man, though, with the grit of a German Shepherd and the heart of a Great Dane, and every day, he gets a little more comfortable and trusting. We are so proud of the strides he's already made. Just a few short weeks after his rescue, he's managed to sneak in some kisses, affection, and engagement between his hunkering down and retreating to his safe space (his kennel) for long periods. He's also graced his foster mom with some smiles, play bows, tail wags, butt wiggles, and brief moments of silliness. He's still quite suspicious of his foster mom most of the day and is still learning to trust and feel safe. These minor signs are hugely encouraging, however, and we look forward to seeing more of Cash's true personality shine as he begins to feel more calm, comfortable, loved, and secure. We really can't blame the little dude for being wary of strangers and sometimes defensive and temperamental with humans he's not very familiar with. Our hearts break for the neglect he's been suffering, but we are committed to finding Cash the most wonderful, patient, and loving home. We seek understanding, patient, loving, dog savvy guardians for him. Guardians who are prepared to give Cash all the time he needs to acclimate to a new environment, respect his boundaries and need for space sometimes, and understand that Cash's trust and affection must be earned, not assumed. Most importantly, we seek humans who are eager and committed to providing Cash the safe, comfortable, happy life he's always deserved but most likely never lived and to have him experience the feeling of unconditional love of guardians who have no expectations of him other than him now living his best life. A quiet, respectful adult home is needed; he's not a suitable housemate for children. The emotional and mental healing Cash will have to do after his ordeal will be a much longer, challenging period than his physical healing. Still, he's undoubtedly worth it, and nothing will compare to the feeling of fulfillment, gratitude, and love once Cash's respect, trust, and love are earned and returned tenfold. While slow to trust people, Cash is fantastic with other dogs of all sizes and ages and is much more comfortable and relaxed in the company of his own species at this time. Because of this, we feel Cash should go to a home with at least one other dog to provide comfort, moral support, confidence, and behavior modeling as Cash enters this next phase of his life. Cash is quiet and well-behaved in the home. He loves his crate and is housebroken. We don't think Cash ever experienced stairs or had to navigate them in his previous life and needed to be carried up and down when he first came to us. He will now walk up stairs slowly and cautiously but is not yet comfortable going down on his own and needs to be carried. He's been recently neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He's also had a senior blood panel completed, as well as dental cleaning and extractions. His knees are quite arthritic, but he's been started on joint supplements and continuation of his diet/weight loss plan, and light exercise will help him lead a more comfortable life in his senior years. If you have the environment, patience, love, and understanding needed for Cash to thrive and are ready to open your heart and home to a very deserving sweet soul who truly needs it, please reach out today! His adoption fee to the rescue is $275. Cash is being fostered on Chicago's North Side and can be seen by appointment only after an application has been submitted. For more information or an application, please email palsplace1@hotmail.com or visit palsplacerescue.org. Our correspondence can sometimes end up in junk/spam folders. Please check there frequently if you are awaiting a reply from us. Unfortunately, we cannot place holds on our dogs for any reason. Please do not apply unless you are willing and prepared to welcome a dog into your home within three days of applying. • Cash's adoption fee is $275. Pal's Place is a volunteer organization funded entirely by donations and adoption fees. 100% of our fees and donations go directly to the care of our rescued dogs. • Please visit palsplacerescue.org or email Palsplace1@hotmail.com for an adoption application with the dog's name in the subject line. Story
Johnny is being fostered in VA. Only read about Johnny if you are looking for a gentle, small dog to add to your family! There are so many good things to share about Johnny but, first, his history. Johnny lost his Kerrville, Texas home on July 4th 2025 when his community experienced catastrophic flooding. Johnny landed in the area shelter and the shelter staff, once they determined Johnny’s Texas family was unable to care for him and realized Johnny was blind, reached out to the Blind Dog Rescue to request foster placement. Plans were made and Johnny soon traveled to his Virginia Blind Dog Rescue foster home. His transport to Virginia was long – two days of traveling one weekend, a week in a temporary foster home in Alabama, and then one more travel day to get to Virginia. Without exception, every driver plus his temporary foster family said Johnny is a great traveler and such a sweet boy. Now that you know his history, here are some good things to share about Johnny: -has a coat the color of a penny! So beautiful! -crate trained -good with other dogs -aware of cats but ignores -great eater -good traveler in the car -does well at the vet -loves head rubs -sleeps quietly all night -and is a very quiet dog during the day! He has barked just a few times since arriving in his foster home (that happens about once every other week, when he is excited about meal prep). If you are still interested in this special little guy, here are more details about Johnny, including his health history. Johnny quickly learned the daily routine in his foster home. He is waiting at our feet when breakfast and dinner are being prepared. He is also standing in the kitchen for mid-day snack. He knows every evening it is “sofatime” – a time when he is on the sofa with the other four dogs in the house and his foster mom too. He curls up and takes a nap, although does enjoy a head rub. And, at the end of the day, he goes right to sleep in his bed in his crate, and never makes a sound and sleeps all night. Johnny likes to sniff around outside but generally does his business and is ready to go back in. He is from Texas so is a little uncertain about wet and cool weather but he is getting acclimated! He needs to be carried up and down steps. The best thing about Johnny is his personality. While he sometimes enjoys playing and gets excited at mealtime, he is generally very low-key, very gentle, and sweet. He has started giving occasional kisses too. While not diagnosed with dementia, he is starting to show some signs that this may be an issue. For example, he will be taken outside and then stand there a while, like he is unsure why he is out there! Like many rescue dogs, especially seniors, Johnny has some medical issues that have needed to be addressed. When he arrived at his foster home, he was missing hair on his back and on top of his tail too, likely due to a former flea infestation. His hair is very slowly growing back. Johnny also has had dry skin and some small lumps and bumps like many older dogs have. His skin has improved and he is on daily fish oil to help. When he first arrived, Johnny needed a dental and also had two large lumps plus a small one removed. Johnny had those procedures completed and he did very well, with a good recovery. Then, in January 2026, a lump was removed on his left front paw. All these lumps were benign but of course he (like all dogs) need their lumps – and areas where lumps were removed - to be monitored. When Johnny first came to his foster home, he had a quiet, brief cough once or twice a day. The vet said this could be a mild trachea collapse, could be allergies, or could be mild bronchitis. At that point, because it was so infrequent, she said no further follow-up or treatment was needed. She also said his lungs were clear and his heart sounded good. Over time, the coughing has periodically increased in frequency and so, in January, Johnny had an x-ray which revealed that his heart is now enlarged. Also, an arrhythmia was detected that had not been heard before. He was diagnosed with early heart disease and this likely explains the increased coughing. He now takes Vetmedin and Benazepril daily. In early September, Johnny had a sudden onset of vestibular syndrome. For those interested in adopting Johnny and/or if you have questions about vestibular syndrome, speak with your vet. It is a relatively common condition. Johnny developed a head tilt to the left and began circling to the left. He also had nystagmus (rapid eye movements). His appetite was not affected; he still loves to eat. The vet said Johnny has a mild case of vestibular syndrome and his symptoms have improved (the nystagmus has almost disappeared). However, he still has a left head tilt (very slowly improving) and he still tends to walk in circles to the left, and this can make it challenging for him to walk on a leash. But recently he has just begun to turn his head to the right and sometimes walk to the right! The vet said in September he may have a lingering head tilt but he should not be circling as much as time passes. It is important to know that mild vestibular syndrome is not life-threatening. It is also important to know that there is a chance Johnny will continue to improve - and also a chance he will not. A couple pictures on Johnny’s profile on the BDRA website show his current head tilt/turn. Before Johnny had vestibular syndrome, he was great with housetraining. Once the vestibular symptoms started, he began to have occasional daily accidents in the house and this has continued. Johnny is taken out every 2 to 3 hours during the day and wears a belly band around the clock because his accidents are unpredictable. Johnny has also lost most of his hearing since arriving at his foster home. In addition, he cannot see at all. His eyes have some very minimal clear drainage at times but are currently healthy. His eye pressure is normal (no glaucoma) at this time and he does not have dry eye. He had eye ulcers when leaving the shelter but those have resolved. He does have fairly frequent instances of reverse sneezing. We don’t know Johnny’s history before he arrived at the Texas shelter and so – as it is with any rescue dog – we can’t predict what the future holds for his health. Anyone interested in adopting Johnny should speak with their vet about not only vestibular syndrome but also about heart disease. Johnny has not spent time with children and, although he is such a nice dog, he should be adopted in a home with older children or adults only. And he should always be supervised when he is with young children, as all dogs should be. If you think you can provide this sweet, gentle dog the wonderful forever home he deserves, complete an application today!

This fee helps cover any necessary medical care to prepare him for adoption. Your donation also helps save other animals like Cash from euthanasia. If you are awaiting a reply from us, please check your spam/junk folder; sometimes, our replies end up there! We do our best to respond to all inquiries and applications submitted within 48 hours. If you have not received a response to your inquiry or application within three days, please email palsplace1@hotmail.com to ensure your contact was received. • All of our dogs are in foster homes and can be seen BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after receiving an approved application.

Story
Meet Hobart, a Pomeranian that was part of a rescue mission that saved 62 discarded puppy mill survivors. Given his tough start to life, Hobart spends most of his time decompressing and adjusting to a home environment. He enjoys quiet exploration with short bursts of social play with the resident dogs in his foster home. His ideal home will be one that can provide a predictable routine with patient, loving pawrents who can show him just how safe the right home can be. Hobart currently lives with five dogs (two large and three small) and two cats. He enjoys short, low-intensity play sessions with the small dogs and coexists peacefully with the larger dogs, whom he generally ignores. His interactions are brief and self-directed, and he benefits from being allowed to initiate contact at his own pace. He has also had positive interactions with the resident cats in his foster home. Hobart is most relaxed and secure when nested into soft blankets or on a heating pad. At this stage, providing quiet comfort and a sense of safety is more rewarding for him than traditional forms of play or enrichment. As his confidence grows, gentle exploration and low-pressure enrichment opportunities may become more meaningful to him. With the support of a loving family, Hobart will continue to show glimmers of adaptability and resilience that are truly rewarding to see. With the right environment and steady, compassionate care, Hobart has the potential to continue unfolding at his own pace. And what a special sight to see!
