At around 3 years old and a perfect 8 pounds, this charming chiweenie truly is the total package. Harry is as sweet as they come, with a goofy personality that keeps life fun and a handsome face you’ll never get tired of looking at. He absolutely adores people and will happily soak up all the love, pets, and treats you have to give. Harry is a social little guy who gets along great with other dogs. While he’s still new to meeting cats, he’s shown himself to be curious and respectful so far. He loves to play, especially when it involves toys or zooming around the yard, and one of his favorite pastimes is rolling around happily on his bed like it’s the best place in the world. He’s also putting in the work to be a well-mannered companion—Harry is doing great with his house training and crate training, and he’s making impressive progress on the leash. He’s well on his way to being an easy, joyful addition to any home. If you’re looking for a loving, playful, and all-around delightful pup, Harry might just be your perfect match. Story
The volume of discarded seniors entering NJ’s shelter system is sad and alarming. Pippy is one of our newest arrival. She was curled up in a sad scared cranky ball in the back of her kennel at our local Animal Control facility surrounded by large barking dogs. She’s severely overweight at 18lbs when she should be more like 12, and she gets out of breath easily with even short walks. She was blind in one eye which was painful and uncomfortable due to severe untreated, chronic dry eye as well as glaucoma, so we made the decision with our vet that removal would be the best option to help her feel better. She’s healing nicely and warming up, she’s a chihuahua so can be snarky with strangers and doesn’t like to be bothered when she’s comfy in her bed, but getting a bit happier each day. And she only has bottom teeth remaining after her dental so isn’t particularly scary. Getting gummed to death by an obese one-eyed pirate 🏴‍☠️ Chihuahua isn’t much of a threat. She’s fine with other mellow little dogs and definitely knows her own chihuahua kind, a funny but lovable little personality if you understand chi culture and customs. She’s at least 10 years old and overall in pretty good health now that her untreated eye and dental situation have been taken care of and she’s already lost 2lbs on her diet! Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Pippy in Northern NJ. Pippy is just the latest in a long line of local seniors we have taken in suffering from chronic painful medical issues that need immediate medical attention to give them a better quality of life. Please consider a donation so we can continue to step up week after week for these little ones in need in our local shelters. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
DOB 12-7-2024 Wolfie is a gorgeous Red and White Long Hair! This beautiful boy loves everyone, likes to play with toys and his friends. He is neutered, heartworm negative and has received a Proheart6 preventative injection, up to date on shots and is now looking for a loving home. His adoption fee is 900.00 and his transport fee is 135.00. HEARTS is our transport, they run every 2 weeks. It's the best transport and the only one we will use. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. After you submit your application please allow a few days to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We do look for the best home that fits each of our pets, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved we with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the pet you are interested in.Together we can decide if this is the best choice for both.

Story
Meet Edna, the Queen of Hearts   Her Royal Highness Edna rules her kingdom with equal parts affection, sass, and impeccable boundaries. A devoted cuddler when the mood strikes, she adores being close to her people — preferably wrapped snugly in a cozy towel like the pampered little queen she is. But like any proper monarch, Edna will absolutely let you know when court is adjourned and she requires her space. Otherwise, she enjoys the company of her court (humans and dogs).   Edna is diabetic and requires regular insulin injections, a process she considers deeply offensive to the Crown. Expect dramatic complaints, wounded expressions, and the occasional royal protest. Thankfully, a warm towel snuggle and loyal subjects willing to spoil her help restore peace to the kingdom.   Edna is looking for a calm, loving home where her quirks, routines, and royal attitude will be cherished. In return, Queen Edna will reward her chosen humans with loyal companionship, cozy cuddles, and the privilege of serving the sweetest tiny ruler in the land.   If you've always wanted to be part of a royal family, please consider applying to adopt this little Queen and ask for EDNA THE SPICY CHI TX!  August 16, 2026, 6:10 pm

Story
PROSPECT PETE: Tiny Dog. Massive Feelings. Absolutely No Men. Prospect Pete is a 5-year-old miniature Dachshund who was found wandering the streets of Louisiana looking like life had thoroughly kicked his little wiener-dog ass. When NorthStar took him in, Pete was skinny, covered in hair loss, had double ear infections, needed a dental, had a growth on his chest, and frankly looked like he’d been through several terrible life choices and at least one bad relationship. The good news? His body is healing. The bad news? Pete has apparently decided that men are canceled. We can’t know exactly what happened to him during his first five years, but we’re pretty certain a man failed this little guy in a big way. Pete would very much like to file for a lifetime restraining order against the male gender and is currently accepting applications from women only. His ideal home consists of: ✔ Women. ✔ More women. ✔ Another friendly dog. ✔ Snacks. ✔ Soft voices. ✔ Someone who is home a lot. ✔ Absolutely no dudes trying to “win him over.” Pete doesn’t bite men. He doesn’t attack men. He simply looks at them and says, “No thank you, sir. I’ve had enough.” He adores other dogs and apparently every anxious little dachshund needs an emotional support dog. He loves toys, running in the yard, car rides, and being close to his person. He sleeps quietly in his crate when he knows you’re nearby because, like many of us, he simply wants reassurance that everyone isn’t leaving him forever. Now, let’s discuss the elephant in the room: Pete is not housebroken. There. We said it. Pete wears a belly band because sometimes his feelings get bigger than his bladder. He uses potty pads when available, goes outside with encouragement, and continues to work on his life skills. He’s basically a middle-aged man who refuses therapy but is making small improvements. He also hates cats, so if you own a cat, Pete would like to respectfully suggest that you do not. Pete needs: • A female-only home • Another dog companion • Someone home most of the day • Patience • Understanding • A sense of humor • An appreciation for tiny dogs with enormous emotional baggage He is not a plug-and-play dog. He is a project. A tiny, adorable, traumatized, opinionated project. But if you’re looking for a fiercely loyal little shadow who will love you with his entire crooked, anxious, dachshund heart, Prospect Pete might just be your guy. Apply at www.northstarpets.org and ask for PROSPECT PETE LA. Warning: Pete comes with trust issues, a loud bark, occasional accidents, and enough emotional damage to qualify for his own therapist.August 16, 2026, 6:10 pm
