When a mama dog was run over by a car, leaving behind puppies, a rescuer stepped up to save the little ones. First up is Cashew. He IS a little nut, but he’s sweet and tender too! He was the one puppy of the four that hid so well, he almost wasn’t saved. He came to me several hours after the other three, after the second search. He is the biggest. He is also the one with the most tender heart who takes the word NO!! most seriously (if only for a minute), the one most EAGER for interaction, the one who is most excited to have a person playing with him. DNA results for the pups came back saying they are mostly Chihuahua and Cattle Dog. Cashew weighed in at 11.2 pounds on 2/2 but we expect the dogs to weigh 18 to 31 pounds when fully grown. Hi. My name is… well… it depends who you ask. The rescue people called me Gherkin because when they found me in a trailer park in Texas, nobody seemed to know my real name. Apparently I’m small, wrinkly, and a little bit pickled looking. Hence… Gherkin. Turns out my actual name is Junior. But honestly at this point I answer to both. Call me Gherkin. Call me Junior. Call me “Hey buddy.” Just call me to dinner and we’re good. I’m about 8 years old and a very respectable 13 pounds — basically the perfect portable size. Big enough to be a real dog, small enough to fit directly into your lap… which, by the way, is my preferred seating arrangement. A few things about me: • I love people. All of them. Big people, little people, people sitting on couches that clearly need a dog on them. • I am mostly housetrained. Look, I’m trying my best here. We’re all adults. • I’m crate trained, but I will absolutely voice my opinion about it for a minute when you first put me in. • I require a dog friend. Non-negotiable. I am not a solo act. Little Miss Truly was just rescued from a shelter in Texas by NorthStar. She is such an affectionate little gal - at the shelter she would greet all visitors at the front of her kennel, hoping for a touch or a pet. Truly is about 8 years old and weighs only 9 pounds. She is sight impaired but we believe she can see shadows. Truly has now arrived in NJ and she is settling in at her new foster home. The cats in the home are very interested but still won’t get too close. She enjoys being outside and constantly has her nose up in the or in the grass air to smell things. Truly experienced snow on the grass this morning and she didn’t seem to care. Truly still has her tail tucked most of the time but it’s high in the air with butt scratches or side of the face scratches.
