This is Sampson, a black and tan, 4 pound, male chihuahua/terrier mix born on 9/15/21. Sampson loves to be held and he loves to sleep on your stomach. He is a real sweetie but he wants to be the boss. He has a crooked tail that is very cute and adds to his mystique as times were tough for him before he was rescued. He’s completely vetted including a pro heart 6. His adoption fee is $700 and his transport fee is $155. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. We sometimes receive a lot of interest on an animal and can't always reply to each email in a timely manner. An application does not obligate you to adopt from us, but it does show that you are serious about the adoption process. Please remember we are all volunteers. After you submit your application, please allow a few days for a volunteer to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked and a volunteer with determine if it is the best match for you and the animal. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We match up the best home for the animal, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved a volunteer with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the animal you are interested in.

Meet Spiro, a "Chiweenie (Chihuahua/Dachshund mix) who was picked up as a stray by a rescue person in Texas. He was running back-and-forth across the busy four-lane road - it's a miracle that he didn't get hit by a car. Spiro's Good Samaritan tried every way possible to find his owner but no one claimed him so now he's coming to NJ to join the NorthStar Pet Rescue family. Spiro is 12 to 15 months old and weighs 12 pounds. He's a real sweet boy and cuddle bug but he's very anxious and skittish,  jumps at every noise. He has not shown any aggression, just fear. Unfortunately Spiro has tested positive for heartworm and will be treated at NorthStar's expense so that he may become as good as new! This bonded pair ended up at a local shelter when their owner entered the hospital and wasn't expected to recover. Sweet and adorable Scrappie is a 12-year-old Cairn Terrier boy (he weighs 30 pounds) and Sofie is an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix named who is a little more than "pleasingly plump" at 33 pounds. We are Sofie and Scrappie, a "bonded pair" of dogs adopted from North Ocean County Animal facility and recently returned when their owner was no longer able to care for them due to his medical condition. Sofie is a 9-year-old cute, adorable, chubby Chihuahua mix and her foster is currently working with her to lose some weight. Scrappie is a 12-year-old Cairn Terrier mix with a personality of his own. Both dogs are friendly, enjoy being petted and will seek attention. Scrappie is vocal and will whimper to be petted while Sofie very nonchalantly nuzzles herself into the center of attention. Sofie has had a few accidents in the house but she has only been with her foster a few days and the foster is still getting used to her schedule. Besides the routine potty schedule, both have come to their foster on a few occasions to be let out. They have been around other dogs and cats in the past and currently live with two other dogs and a cat with no issues. Both dogs are very easy-going and enjoy hanging out with the group. They are friendly and enjoy greeting visitors to the house. Both dogs are also good on leash, easy to handle and would make a great addition to any home.  Scrappie, although he's older than Sofie, is more playful than she is - still lots of pep in this boy's step! They both know some basic commands like Sit, Come, Stay, Down & Shake. Scrappie was not a fan of all the rain we recently had - you can see a photo where he is hiding under a pink blanket because he did NOT want to go out in that wet weather! We feel that they would make good pets for just about any home. They will only be adopted into a home together as they have lived together for many years & are dependent on each other. Look at those amazing ears!! Eros was an owner surrender, along with 8 others of his siblings, parents, who knows. The family had 9 Chihuahuas that they were surrendering to the shelter, and NorthStar stepped in before they were even able to get into the shelter. Eros is now in a foster home in Texas where he has been exploring the entire house without much fear. There are cats in the home & he seems familiar with them but he is afraid of them right now. I see this confident little dog down deep and happy little dog. His tail wags some now that he has been in his foster home for more than a month - he has become a very loving snuggle bug.  Eros has such a gentle soul according to his foster mom and he makes her laugh. He loves to dig around in the blankets and then burrow in them. He usually barks at the door with excitement when people arrive. He wiggles so hard and bounces. And he loves to go on walks - the only thing he doesn't love is being crated & he will express his displeasure. But foster mom tells us he is just a wonderful boy deserving of a wonderful home. Eros is about 8 years old, weighs under 8 pounds and will be coming to NJ soon to find a loving forever home. Doobie NJ was part of a hoarding case of seized dogs - he was the only Chihuahua! He is currently 12 years old and 8lbs. Doobie is incredibly social. He hung around as the team saved the remaining dogs, sitting there on a little blanket, just watching the scene. He is a total lap dog, happy to be in anyone's arms. Where are my senior Chihuahua lovers, because this 6lb girl is perfect and looking for her forever home! 💕 Pinky is a super sweet and petite 12-13yr old whose owner sadly passed away. She was living in the basement for a month with another dog (they were being cared for by a family member) before being surrendered to rescue. This girl LOVES attention, especially after all she’s been through. Whenever you look down she will be there with her puppy eyes begging to be held. Her favorite pastime is laying in your lap and being doted upon. She’s also a big foodie and loves to eat! She is good with other dogs and cats but is a ✨diva✨ who will sometimes get possessive of your lap. She learns to knock it off after being removed from your lap about 6-10 times. She has not exhibited this behavior towards people, only other animals. If you are Chihuahua experienced you will be familiar. She would likely not do well in an apartment or condo because when she is left alone she makes shrieking noises. 😬 Pinky’s bloodwork did show some pretty elevated liver values, so she is on daily medication for that and will need to have re-checks to see if her values improve. Her eyes are a bit cloudy and on exam she does not have glaucoma, but images were sent to an ophthalmologist to get a better idea of what may be going on with them. She is not in any pain or discomfort and at this time does not require any care for her eyes, but they should be monitored as well. Pinky is being fostered near Clinton, NJ but can be adopted anywhere in NJ and most of the surrounding tri-state area. Dobby the miniature house Dingo is looking for his forever home! 😍 He may look like a small feral wild dog, but he actually hails from the streets of Jersey City. He got loose from a prevalent backyard breeder that has a multitude of dogs, and this smart boy was able to get away and on to better things. Obviously, he’s not really a mini Dingo but more like a 15lb Chihuahua/Terrier mix. He spent some time with his original finders before coming into rescue where he could be fully vetted and find his forever home! He is just a young guy, around 1-2yrs old. Dobby loves other dogs, and his ideal home will have at -least- one other dog, although he loves being part of a pack. He is leery of new people at first, but he warms up quickly. He doesn’t really bark/growl at new people, but keeps his distance and tip-toes around them until he trusts them. When Dobby bonds to you, he is your shadow. He will follow you everywhere, and is super charismatic and affectionate. However, he is ok being left alone. He’s done really well with housebreaking for a pup who never experienced living in a real home before. He was just neutered so sometimes tries to mark, but he wears a belly band with no issue. He is ok with dog savvy cats! No children due to his nervous nature. Dobby’s ideal home would be with a family who doesn’t expect him to be a socialite. He has a LOT of potential, and is super smart and handler oriented. He’s also not shown any aggressive behavior in foster care though had a bit of a panicky meltdown at the vet. But he will not be the dog who happily greets your friends with a wagging tail. More like dodging around corners trying to avoid them (introverts will love this guy.) Adoptions are done in Morris Plains, NJ. He can be adopted anywhere in NJ or within 2-3hrs of the rescue as long as adopter comes to meet him.
