Story
Volunteer notes, 6/17/24:Scrappy is built for speed! He loved zooming around the play yard today. He also knows `sit` really well and will perform for treats. Despite a slightly serious demeanor, Scrappy behaved respectfully and showed off his nice, people-friendly manners. His only quirk was that he did not want to be leashed and returned to the kennel, so some light wrangling ensued. All was forgiven once we slid some treats into his temporary den!

Story
This stunning girl is Nala and she is around 2 years old. She was surrendered for no fault of her own...simply because pets aren`t allowed where her family lives now. According to her owner, Nala lived indoors, is crate trained, is good with all people, will stay in a fenced yard, and walks nicely on leash. Nala is a calm girl who listens well, is friendly but not over affectionate, and enjoys time to sniff and explore our play yard. She does not like other dogs who are very energetic, but may do well with another one who is calm like her, so a meet and greet is recommended. Nala is a really nice dog who will make a wonderful addition to most any home!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. ENZO ~2 years old. Good with some dogs, but best as an only dog . Not good with kids or cats.  GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.        Enzo is patiently waiting for the perfect family to find him. He’s a tall stunning boy who LOVES going for a ride in the car, seriously – this guy cannot walk past a car without letting you know he wants to get in. Enzo is currently a lean 85lbs and needs a family committed to keeping him at a healthy weight. Enzo didn’t inherit the best genes, likely due to a backyard breeder whose only interest was making money. Due to this, Enzo will need hip surgery within the next 1-2 years. The rescue will cover the cost of surgery at one of their vets, so his adopter doesn’t have to worry about that, but they will need to care for him during the recovery period. Enzo would do best as an only dog, he loves attention and going for a walk. He is low to medium energy, has no problems with stairs. He is still somewhat mouthy and will not be placed in a home with children younger than teenagers. Enzo is house trained and doesn’t need to be crated. After a walk, his favorite past time is lounging on the couch. He’s friendly but not overly pushy looking for affection. Enzo is a goofy boy that just puts a smile on your face being around him. We understand that his upcoming health needs will deter some adopters, but we are hopeful someone will give this boy a chance, he deserves his own forever family. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.KODIAK ~5 years old. Good with dogs and cats. Not good with kids under 16. Requires fenced yard. Residents of NC and SC Click to apply for Kodiak Please Note: This link will take you to Blue Moon Shepherd Rescue.         Meet Kodiak, a purebred sable male German shepherd. He is a gentle giant who loves to go for walks, car rides, explore and just sniff.   He is eager to please and although a big boy at 90 pounds, he has an extremely gentle temperament. Kodiak came to us badly abused. He has come a long way in his foster home and is ready to start his next journey.  His ideal home would be adult only (no children) where he can get all the love and attention he craves.  He is a ‘soft dog’ and does not like loud voices or to be spoken to harshly. He listens attentively and takes direction very well.   Kodiak loves routine and very much enjoys his walks. He has a medium energy level and is content to be a couch potato lying around watching TV. His foster home has several German shepherds and does well with all of them. He is not aggressive or confrontational. He would most likely do best with a female companion and not with a multiple dog home.  His BFF is a small Belgian Malinois mix and they love to play chase. Rory runs and Kodiak tries to herd her. He is a bit socially awkward and doesn't understand dog play, he thinks herding is playing. Some dogs would not find this amusing so he needs a mild tempered dog companion. There is also a resident training kitty in the foster home and he does well, however, on occasion when he doesn’t get enough exercise, he will play a stalking game trying to find her.  When he does this, he just sits and watches. If the cat runs, he will chase but will correct easily and stop when given the command.  He would not do well in home with several cats.   Kodiak needs a quiet home with calm, firm handlers. He would not do well in an active house and gets nervous with loud noises and voices.  An owner experienced with German Shepherds is a must. He also has a high prey drive for deer and squirrels so a secure 6 ft wooden fence is a requirement with no exceptions. On walks, a deer or squirrel will send him into high alert. For this reason, Kodiak cannot be off leash, or he will chase deer and be in the wind.  If you are looking for a dog for long hikes off leash, Kodiak is not the dog for you (a professional trainer has confirmed this).   Kodiak is a sweet, beautiful, gentle boy whose dream is a loving, quiet home that will give him the love and kindness he so deserves. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and on heartworm preventative. He is obedience, crate and potty trained. He walks well on leash, great in the car and is highly food motivated. If you have any questions or are interested in this very special boy, you can contact Donna at BMSR1313@gmail.com. Click to apply for KodiakVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.For more information on our adoptable pet list please visit: Adoptable Pet List Please join us at our next Event(s): Current Scheduled Events:         July 25, 2024, 8:00 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.STEVE ~3 years old. TBD if good with dogs, kids and cats. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.   This sweet boy is overflowing with so much love and enthusiasm for people. His motto is if life gives you lemons, let's make lemonade and friends! If you ever felt down, he would definitely lift your spirits. He has a great head tilt so you know that he is listening to you. This boy loves hard though, so it’s better that there were no small kids in the house but it’s only because he would bowl them over and smother them with kisses before you could get him off them! He would be ok with older considerate kids. Steve loves going for walks and exploring new things. He is up for any adventures you want to take him on. He does great riding in the car and is well behaved when riding. Steve has visited several big box stores and really enjoyed perusing the aisles and meeting new people. He is very polite meeting and greeting when we are in public. Steve is very excited to meet doggie friends. He is a bit socially awkward and is still learning how to read the cues when the other dogs have had enough. He is definitely improving in this department. We are working on how to "play it cool" when meeting other dogs. He is a work in progress and just needs someone to help show him the way. Just look at his videos! He does well on the leash but will need someone who will continue working with him on training. He is very food motivated so that is always a bonus. Steve was picked up as a stray. He was half starved and weigh about 35 lbs. He had also been hit by a car and the shelter took him to the vet. Steve was at the shelter for a while and they did a wonderful job helping him gain weight and getting use to being handled. Steve would love a family that is ready to be showered with love because he has plenty to give. He would love a fenced yard so he could run and play. He would love a playful companion that could help him learn the ropes. Steve has also discovered squeaky balls and absolutely loves them! He does kill the squeaker in the ball so you may need to set up a ball fund. Steve will carry one ball in his mouth while chasing another and has managed to carry 2 balls at a time. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.AVA ~8 years old.  Good with older considerate children.  Not good with dogs or cats. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only Hi! My name is Ava (known as Gilda prior to coming into GSRA). My foster mommy keeps telling me I'm a beauty so I'm rolling with that! I am a middle-aged long haired Sheppie. I'm so chill, that even my mom is surprised! Like, super chill! I was returned to the rescue 5 years after being adopted from the rescue, due to no fault of my own. Realize I'm looking for the ideal home, so don't take this as being biased BUT I have to tell you, I am a PERFECT companion dog. I LOVE to go out on walks, a minimum of two a day. Once the weather cools off, I wouldn't complain if my new mommy/daddy snuck in a 3rd walk! I do FABULOUS on the leash. I love to check out my surroundings, sniff and just trot along (my last mommy told this mommy that I wasn't taken out on walks very often). If you see another dog on leash coming in our vicinity, I do like to bark & pull slightly. HOWEVER, when my mommy corrects me, I respond really well. After my walks, I like to relax outside with my mom while she brushes me. She says I need to be brushed every day cause I'm hairy! Hmmmm, what else about me? You could say I'm a people pleaser! I want to make my mommy happy. I do great in the house when left alone (no crates, please! I don't need or want one). My mommy leaves me with peanut butter in my kong when she heads out the door, which is so nice & yummy! I also like tennis balls; you might think I have golden retriever in me cause I just hang out with the ball in the mouth! I listen well, know basic commands & I like to be in the same room as my mom; I'm not quite a velcro dog (as I do respect your space) but I do like to be nearby so I can keep an eye on you. I do great on car rides. I was basically an inside dog prior and would love to get more experiences going out on more car rides, taking trips, going on hikes. Do you think you would like to be my new mommy or daddy? Come check me out and let's see if we are a mutually good fit! UPDATE! I've now been with my foster mom for a bit. She says I've bonded quickly to her; I'm not sure what this means. She did want me to talk about my 'dog aggression' which is how I've been categorized. That is, up until now! The general consensus is that I have not been properly socialized with other dogs. Now, understand this. I DO need to be the only pet; I have a prey drive for smaller animals. And while I'm working towards being social with other dogs, I don't want to share a home and mommy/daddy with them. If you want to be my new parent, please promise me that you will allow a trainer to work with me regarding my manners with other dogs. This will alleviate my stress when I see other dogs as well as make me the perfect dog on leash! Ok. I'm ready to meet my potential new folks! Ready. Set. Go!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.For more information on our adoptable pet list please visit: Adoptable Pet List Please join us at our next Event(s): Current Scheduled Events:         July 25, 2024, 8:00 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. MICKI ~2 years old. Good with large dogs and cats. Not good with kids. Needs companion animal. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. Oh Micki you're so fine you blow my mind oh Micki!!!!! Micki is that girl who needs only one sip of her White Claw to become the life of the party!! She's the one who strangers would swear is quiet, shy and a devoted church-goer. But those that know her, behind the cloisters of her foster family's home, know that she is living La Vida Loca!!!! When it comes to having fun, Micki will be your guide! Whether it's making 1ft deep mud holes in your backyard, turning your hot tub into her very own splash pad or licking toads late at night in the backyard - if there is even a chance that a good time could be had, Micki is there with know how to make it happen! We think Micki started life as a domestic princess as her house manners are really great. But, as is the case with many a young girl, somewhere along the way, she fell into the wrong crowd and ended up on the streets. Although she doesn't like to talk about, Micki does have a rap sheet with the Po Po. She was accused of stealing home-delivered food off someone's porch, goosing a guy who was mowing his front lawn, harassing sleeping cats and running the streets in search of a good time. During this time on the lam, Micki lived by the rule of "dogs rule, humans drool"! It was no touchy-touchy as far as people go and when it came to dodging any form of human contact, Micki was at gold medal Olympian status. Until........ one fateful day when a hankering for roast chicken landed her in a dog pen where we were able to catch her!! Fast forward 3 weeks and Micki has accepted her fate and is back to doing what she does best - having fun! The transition from wild street pup to wild house pup could never have happened had it not been for Micki's canine foster siblings! They have been key to getting her to become comfortable with the humans in her house (well, that and the magical black box called a fridge!!). Through patience, dog help and lots of lunch meat, Micki is coming around to the idea of being patted and rubbed. She still likes to play "keep away", especially if you make the mistake of moving too fast, but the Ice Queen of human dislike is definitely thawing and learning that creatures with opposable thumbs have a lot to offer a girl like her! Once thing Micki has NEVER had a problem with though is having fun with other dogs. This girl likes to play 24/7 and, like we mentioned above, can make anything a game. She loves toys, water and dirt (not necessarily in that order). If Micki isn't sleeping, she is playing. It's a good thing her foster home has 2 dogs as Micki has so much energy that they need to tag team while playing so one of them doesn't collapse in a panting pile of fur!! Having a playful, energetic canine friend is going to be a "must have" in Micki's forever home! Talking of forever homes, Micki has communicated pretty clearly what she wants/needs in that department. Her list of demands include: * VERY patient, adult humans who have experience nurturing and encouraging "human-shy" dogs * No children and no small dogs (trust me, us humans and the other GSDs have a hard enough time keeping up with her) * A high energy, confident, PLAYFUL dog her size that will continue to teach her the ropes of being a family dog. * Cats would be acceptable, but they need to be confident enough to back her down when she goes to play with them. * A large, fenced in yard that can withstand a water-seeking, dirt-digging furry missile. * A low key lifestyle that doesn't include a lot of human traffic inside the home (Micki prefers dealing with one human at a time). While Micki waits for her forever family to find her, she will continue polishing her human interaction skills and will try to work on her aversion to leash walking. Oh, and she will continue to play, and play, and play........ Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. MAVERICK ~6 years old. Good with older, considerate kids. Wants to be an only pet. Fenced yard required. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. Hi, my name is Mav, short for Maverick. You know...like Tom Cruise in Top Gun. I'm cool like he was and even more handsome. Unfortunately, I lost my home and family to a flood and am looking for a cool pad to be my forever home. I am pretty chill but LOVE for you to throw favorite green ball and I promise, I'll gladly bring them back to you and let you throw it for me again. My foster mom says I have a medium energy, whatever that means! I am potty trained and walk well on a leash, (except I can pull sometimes when I see another pup), and I LOVE to run and sit outside in the yard. My foster mom says that because I’m such a tall Tom, I have to have a 5-6 ft fence if you want to let me loose in the yard, so I can sunbathe and run and play during my free time with you. However, I am cool with leash walks and my foster mom can show you the long rope that I use when I play ball at her house.&#226&#128&#168&#226&#128&#168 I'm a really good boy and know commands like sit, wait, drop it, and most recently learned how to “shake.” I’m very healthy and strong. She says I'm as sweet as they come, and so very gentle and loving, but I do need a little bit of time to get to know you first. Because of this, I do better with adults and older considerate children that give me some time to warm up to them. And Because I’m such a cool, strong, and sensitive guy, my foster mom says my new owner has to have experience with GSD’s. &#226&#128&#168&#226&#128&#168 My mom tries to have me meet new friends, but I tend to be snappy with the other pups and I just don’t know why, but they don’t seem to like it at all. So to keep me and other pups safe, and until further training can occur, I’m flying solo Goose! I’m not sure about those pesky cats either, so my foster mom says no cats for now. I am working with a cool lady that says that I can learn not to be snappy with other dogs, so stay tuned. My foster mom can leave me out in the living room and I don't touch a thing, cause I'm cool like that. I'm great in a crate too but lying on the couch is definitely my preference, and oh a recliner is my absolute fave! I’m super gentle and loving with a calm demeanor. I do that German Shepherd “lean” too!! I am an absolutely stunning lad that will follow you around the house, that is, if you want to be my person. And when you look into my eyes, you will fall in love for sure!! I will be totally dedicated to you. In fact, you'll never go to the bathroom alone again!! &#226&#128&#168&#226&#128&#168 I'll be your Mav forever, and you can be my Goose! Story
Foster notes, 7/17/24:Shasta seems to be great with dogs as she gets along with ours and just wants to play. She does well with our chickens and even listens off leash (we live on acres ), and just runs in circles around you like a typical Belgian Malinois. She shows no aggression with anything, not even with food. Her only bad habit is jumping up and being mouthy with your hands, and she just needs some training with that. She also needs a lot of exercise, so I recommend someone experienced with this breed. She is scared of water and toys, and even water bottles, so we are trying to work with her on that. Other than that she is a very sweet dog!
