**WE ARE CURRENTLY DOING ADOPTIONS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. YOU MUST CALL TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING. PLEASE LEAVE US A VOICEMAIL IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO REACH US. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING.- CCDP STAFF** Hi there, My name is Ellie. I'm almost 9 years old (DOB 5/29/2017) and I weigh about 75 lbs. I was surrendered to the pound due to my breeder's health declining with her age. She was no longer able to properly care for us the way she once had before her husband passed away. My friends Dutch, Shelby and I were the last 3 dogs that were surrendered. I am a very good old girl. I would love to find a new family soon. I would do best in a family that just wants a laid back companion to spend some time with. I definitely have some arthritis and would definitely do better if I was kept on a good joint and hip supplement. I love other dogs and would do well in a home where I get to be around other dogs. I haven't really been a house dog before, so I will need some work. I do like to go outside to go potty and even to play, so I should catch on. If you're looking for a sweet dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. Our adoption fee is $152. We accept cash, check or credit/ debit cards for adoption fees. If you pay using a credit or debit card, a convenience fee of 2.39% will also be applied. If paying by check, you will need 2. One Check will be for the dog license, and one will be for your dog's adoption fee, which includes heartworm testing (for dogs 6 months of age old and older), parvo/distemper vaccine, rabies vaccine, bordetella vaccine, 3 days of panacur de-wormer, spay or neuter surgery, microchip, and a current Ohio dog license. We DO offer foster to adopt. (We will NOT accept cash for foster to adopt). We highly recommend you do a foster to adopt with your new dog if you are not 100% sure your new dog is going to work out in your home. Foster to adopt gives you a couple of weeks with the dog to make sure they are a good fit with your family before your payment is processed and the adoption is finalized. ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet. If you're driving a long distance to adopt, please verify that the vetting process has been completed and dog you're interested in adopting is still available for adoption. The above mentioned vetting is all included in your adoption fee. The adoption fee and what is included in the adoption fee is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Adoptions MUST be done at the pound and in person as there is paperwork to fill out and an adoption contract that must be signed by the adopter. This means you must be willing to travel to our shelter to adopt. If the dog you're interested in adopting has medical conditions or injuries which require medical treatment, we ask that you help with the medical bills, in addition to their adoption fee if possible so we can continue to help the dogs coming in who need additional vet care. We are a county run shelter, therefore we cannot control our intake or the health or behavior of the dogs that come in to our shelter. Although we try our hardest to place all of our adoptable dogs, there are certain circumstances in which any dog in our care could be euthanized at any time and without further notice (IE: sudden untreatable medical condition or injury, temperament or behavioral problems which may not be apparent when the dog first arrives, etc.), therefore all dogs at our shelter should be considered urgent. We try our absolute hardest to never have to euthanize for space and have not had to do so for many years thanks to the ongoing support from the public and high adoption rates. Please remember; the adoption of a more highly adoptable dog will mean more time for the less adoptable dog in the kennel next to him! Shelter hours are Monday-Friday: 8 am- 4 pm. Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 8 am - 12 pm. Adoptions are always welcome any day of the week/ weekend and on holidays. We are here everyday to care for the dogs and the best way to make our day is to see our dogs go to loving families. There is nobody in the office on Saturday, Sunday or holidays, so therefore, we are unable to answer or return phone calls over the weekend. We are only staffed to take care of the dogs and do adoptions over the weekends/ on holidays. Can't adopt a dog? We would love to have more volunteers who are able to spend time with our dogs! The dogs LOVE going for walks and the socialization and exercise helps make the dogs more adoptable. Story
Meet Whitman, a big-hearted German Shepherd with a gentle soul and a seriously charming personality. At 7 years old and 90 pounds, Whitman is the kind of dog who feels like an old friend almost instantly. He is playful, loving, calm, and just the right amount of goofy. He has that wonderful mix of youthful spirit and mature wisdom that makes senior shepherds so special. Whitman loves people. Truly loves them. Men, women, kids ages 5 and up, he has done beautifully with everyone he has met. His favorite way to show affection is leaning into you, resting his head against your leg, or politely offering his paw when he wants attention. He enjoys laying near you and will occasionally snuggle, but he is not the kind of dog who needs to be on top of you. He just wants to be close. He will happily follow his person everywhere, moving at your pace and sticking by your side like he was trained for it. He has some endearing quirks that make him unforgettable. When he is excited to go outside or eat, he prances and bounces like a much younger dog. When he settles onto his bed, he sometimes lets out the biggest sigh that honestly sounds like a cow mooing. He is very vocal about his needs and will bark and hop around if he needs water or a potty break, making sure you never miss the memo. Whitman is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows basic commands like sit, lay down, and leave it. He walks decently on a leash and would benefit from a little more practice, but he is respectful and manageable. He does need to be crated when left alone, as he has a mischievous streak when unsupervised and may help himself to shoes or the trash. At night, he prefers to sleep in the same room as his people and does just fine out of the crate. He has lived peacefully with a cat and showed playful curiosity rather than aggression, though his enthusiasm may be a bit much for older cats. With other dogs, he appears selective, so a meet and greet would be important. He may also do perfectly well as an only dog. Whitman enjoys bananas, peanut butter, stuffed toys, belly rubs, chin scratches, brushing sessions, and playing in the snow with his person. He loves being brushed, which is helpful because he is a heavy shedder. He is not a fan of loud noises or car rides, though open windows help. He does well with baths, whether at home or professionally. Whitman has a few manageable medical needs including arthritis, allergies, and a mild heart rhythm irregularity, all of which are currently well controlled with medication. He takes daily meds like a champ, though he is adorably picky enough to sometimes chew his pill pockets and spit them out before deciding to try again. Despite everything he has been through, Whitman has blossomed into a confident, loving dog who clearly appreciates safety and kindness. He may flinch if startled or if voices are raised, suggesting a rough past, but with calm handling he is trusting, gentle, and eager to please. Whitman would thrive in a home with a fenced yard where he can stretch his legs, enjoy fresh air, and then come inside for long naps on his dog bed. He would do well in many family dynamics as long as children are respectful. He does not need constant attention, but he loves knowing his people are nearby. Goofy, gentle, and intelligent, Whitman is the kind of dog who makes your house feel like home. If you are looking for a loyal companion with a young heart and an old soul, Whitman may be the one you have been waiting for ———————————————————- The adoption donation for Whitman is $250. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, current on vaccines and on flea/tick/heartworm prevention (age appropriate). If you would like to meet this dog, you must have an approved application on file and be willing to travel to the Youngstown/Mahoning County, Ohio area for a meet and greet. All of our dogs reside in foster homes. We do not have a physical shelter. Applications will be reviewed/approved and each dog will be placed in the home that can best meet their individual need. If you live in a residence with a Homeowner’s Association (HOA) please make sure you check that the dog you are interested in does not violate size or breed restrictions. A successful adoption is our goal. Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption of any dog. We require you call your established veterinarian asap to schedule a wellness visit. —————————- Our applications can be found by clicking on the “adoption application” link at https://apaprescue.com Our primary form of communication is email. Please check your spam/junk folder so you don’t miss any emails! ————— Adoption donation policy effective 1/1/23: Under a year - $350 cash/check $360 PayPal/Venmo Adult (1-9) - $250 cash/check $260 PayPal/Venmo Senior (10+) - $200 cash/check $210 PayPal/Venmo We apologize for the inconvenience of a service fee if you are using PayPal or Venmo. Each year we lose hundreds of dollars for their service fees, and their fees continue to rise. Every dollar matters and those lost dollars means less dogs we can fund and help. We are a 100% volunteer group that utilizes foster homes. We do not have a shelter/building. Thank you for understanding.

Story
Meet our little fighter, Maeve 🤍🐾 This sweet girl has already been through more than most puppies her age. Maeve was brought into the pound struggling to breathe with what appeared to be pneumonia. She was rushed to the vet right away, and thanks to quick care, she’s now breathing comfortably on her own. During her exam, the vet also discovered foreign bodies in her abdomen, but the good news is she was able to pass them naturally. Despite everything she’s endured, Maeve never stopped fighting. Even while not feeling her best, she still tried to play and show off the joyful puppy spirit she was born with. At just 3 months old, she is incredibly sweet, resilient, and full of love. Maeve is now safe in a loving foster home, but she’s dreaming of something even better—a forever home to call her own. We know she’ll make an amazing addition to the right family and bring so much love with her. She would do best in a home with male dog companions only. Story
*I am currrently in foster! Please contact the shelter if you`d like to meet me!*Hello! My name is Dempsey! If you are looking for an incredibly smart, heartbreakingly handsome, snuggly, cuddly pup, then I am your guy! I am a very sweet boy looking for a forever family. I love meeting new people and making new friends, I truly get along with pretty much everyone I meet. I am very active, energetic, and quite athletic. I love to chase toys, play fetch, and find pesky squeakers to squeak! I love to train and spend a lot of my time learning new skills here. If you have owned a shepherd before, you know that my mind is sharp and ready to work, and I can`t stand to feel bored or lazy. I want to learn new things and you know what? I`m really good at it! When I`m not learning or training, I can usually be found in an office here at the shelter. I am so well-behaved, I am an office fave! I am polite, sweet, and give the best cuddles. I am already housebroken and crate trained, and I am wonderful with the medical team (they say I`m the goodest boy around). I do need to be the only animal in my forever home and I need a family who enjoys working with a smarty-pants like me. If you have have owned a shepherd or similar breed before, you`ll be the best fit for me. I need a special family who can spend time with me, train me, cuddle me, and take me on adventures. Come meet me today! Here`s what the staff have to say about Dempsey, `Dempsey has the best hugs. He will cuddle right in and snuggle you up. He`s fun to train and teach new things and he`s always cracking us up. If I share a little snicky-snacky with him, he`ll eat what`s in the container and then bring me the empty container! He is so affectionate and is always happiest when he has someone to hang out with. He`s just the coolest dude.`If this dog has been successful in our play groups it is not a guarantee that a dog will be social with other dogs in their home or in public settings. Dogs are individuals and have personality conflicts, just like us. Play groups do not guarantee that territorial or resource guarding issues will not surface in the home. While play groups do help us get to know the dog`s better, once they are adopted their new environments and new relationships will influence their behavior in ways we cannot predict. The Adoption Fee Includes:- initial canine distemper combination vaccination- first worming or stool check- rabies vaccination (for ani
