Memphis ACCT-A-173167 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavior concerns & lack of space for incoming dogs, and length of stay. Memphis must have confirmed placement with an RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by Sunday, September 22nd at 10 A.M. Should Memphis's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Memphis arrived at the shelter on 9/3 after his owner unfortunately passed away. A family member cared for him for six months, but due to other obligations, they were unable to continue providing the care Memphis needed to thrive. Since arriving at ACCT, Memphis has shown signs of kennel stress and has exhibited behaviors such as alert barking and staying on the opposite side of the kennel when approached for removal. Due to his length of stay and the stress of being in a kennel environment, Memphis is now timestamped and urgently needs placement to avoid further deterioration.
Per staff on 9/17: Memphis was right at the front of the kennel when I approached, and he was very excited to get out. It took me a second to leash him as he kept moving his head, but once out, he was just excited. Once outside, we attempted a fence meet with another dog, Vivian, which started off well. However, the other handler noted that Memphis was lip-licked at one point, so we increased the distance a bit to see if it was just barrier frustration. When the handler and Vivian came around the fence, Memphis seemed excited, jumping with all four paws off the ground. But when they got close, the other handler mentioned that Memphis' face tightened/stiffened so we gave more space for a distance walk. There was also a volunteer outside with a dog named Buddy. At first, Memphis didn't seem interested in Buddy, but when he did approach, he became overly excited and jumped on Buddy's face, causing Buddy to give a correction. Memphis accepted the correction but started pawing at the ground and play-bowing. We didn't push it with Buddy and returned to Vivian. Memphis was doing better and became playful, though he seemed more interested in getting pets from me, leaning his whole body into me. When I stopped petting him, he pushed his head into my hand. When it was time to go back inside, he allowed me to clip his leash easily and returned to his kennel without issue.
Per volunteer on 9/14: Memphis is a husky/shepherd mix who loves to play and get love. His favorite thing is probably pets, followed closely by treats. Memphis knows sit, paw, and stay. He is strong on leash but calms down after a while. Memphis leans against his handler and looks up at you with a big happy smile. He does not really like getting brushed but will tolerate it if you alternate with pets.
On 9/6, Memphis was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. PCR test results indicated he was negative for pneumovirus, positive for mycoplasma and canine adenovirus type 2.
Per staff 9/4: Memphis was nervous in kennel for leashing. he gave some alert barks and remained on the other side of the kennel. The handler lowered the divider and once lowered he was much easier to leash, exiting without issue. In the play yard memphis enjoyed exploring he yard and sniffing around. he would come over with neutral body language and mid level wags. he allowed all handling from both of us while in the yard, but did not lean in much and was fairly independent. Showed knowledge of sit and took treats gently. He had no interest in play and showed minimal interest in toys.
During an intake exam on 9/3, staff found Memphis in good general health.
Per Memphis's surrender notes, the owner described him as follows:
High energy, playful, super smart
Houstrained
Crate-trained
Never bitten a person or animal
Familiar with 'yes', 'sit', 'stay'
Walks well on leash, pulls slightly
Friendly towards strangers, children, and other dogs

Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately.
Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging a dog or cat.
Confirmed placement is considered confirmation of an actual rescue pull. Possible placement, interested parties, and other "TBD" statuses are not considered confirmed and do not indicate an animal is no longer urgent.
