Golden Retriever puppies and dogs in Westfield, Massachusetts

Buster is a gorgeous Golden Retriever mix who is a young adult (about 2 years old). He lives with dogs of all sizes and gets along with everyone but he is dominant over food so I feed him separately. He also lives with cats and kittens and has never tried to chase them and doesn't really pay attention to them. He is low-to-medium energy in general but has the stamina to go on long hikes, etc. He is not a barker and not a jumper and not a bolter. He likes to be petted. He is currently still in Oklahoma where he was rescued but he can only be adopted out of state where people treat animals well. He has to be prepaid and picked up directly from transport at one of our transport drop off locations below. If things don't work out for some reason, which rarely ever happens, we will either find a local foster to take him in or he will go back to Oklahoma on our next transport until a new home is found. Maggie is about 5 yrs old. She was rescued, but confirmed to be a full blooded golden retriever. She is living with another dog and a cat. She harasses the cat, but is not aggressive toward her. She would do best in a more active home where she doesn't have to compete for attention (NO OTHER PETS). She is obedience trained, very sweet, housebroken and always eager to learn, but needs someone who is experienced handling high energy dogs. So, why are we rehoming her? We are older and she gets very excited; in a friendly way (she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body) when she sees other dogs and sometimes people. When this happens, it creates a perfect storm, and makes it unsafe for either of us to walk the two dogs together. My 6’3” partner has fallen several times when she lunged toward another dog or person, making it nearly impossible for him to manage both dogs. As we are older, the risk of falls/fracture is too scary.

Benj is some kind of couch-pretzel, people-loving, golden good boy with a side of zoomies and heart. You could sum him up with just saying- look at his face!!! That lab-like sunshine face says it all. This boy lights up for people and only aspires to be a lap dog (please don’t tell him he is considered “too big.”) Want to see Benji in action? His fosters describe him as smart, loving, and attention-seeking in the sweetest way. He’ll play chase outside with the dogs, then take breaks on his own. We love a dog that knows the joy of a well-timed break. Out and about, Benji is friendly and social. He walked right up to say hello when I met him and it was an instant connection. Of course, I later learned thats just how it feels with Benji, that connection is part of his charm. Benji also has great leash manners and is an easy walking companion which is a great quality for a dog that is so people-friendly. we greeted his fosters, and he was easy to walk on leash during his assessment. Benji’s personality has two modes, and they’re both adorable: * Outside: happy boy, a bit more focused, occasionally a little unsure in busy, new situations. Overall solid good boy still learning and growing. *Inside: this is when the lover-boy shows up. He comes over to check in, flops into you, and tries to twist himself into your lap like a happy little pretzel. This is also the time for snackies! Snuggles and treats are a top-teir combo to Benji. With new dogs, Benji can be a little insecure at first and appreciates taking it slow at first. That initial shyness is built around a sweetness. He doesn’t rush into the fast playmates role with new dogs but warms to it but we know he is a great companion and playmate thanks to the front-row seat his fosters have. In the foster home, he is doing great with the resident dogs and has a fun chase-play style. Cats are possible for Benji in the right setup. He lives with cats now and may occasionally chase a cat that moves quickly, but he’s not looking to do anything once he catches up. In his cat test, he was polite with our mellow but confident house cat, it was a very polite sniff and walk away. We’d love for Benji to have another dog in the home if cats are part of the picture, rather than a cats-only household. If he has a canine-companion for rounds of chase the cats are much less tempting. Benji would be a wonderful fit for an active person who enjoys walks and hikes as a way to get some exercise and fresh air but is a homebody type otherwise. He is well suited for either house with a yard or apartment life. The only requirement is you must love cuddling at home and not have size limitations on lap-dog privileges. Wimbledon is a sweet, loving boy, who has severe separation anxiety when he has to be away from his people, such as in a crate. He is also highly food motivated, and by that I mean he will take food off of tables and countertops if it is left unguarded. He has never demonstrated any kind of aggression. He is happy to meet new people and is typically generally indifferent to other dogs. He has never been around cats, but has been around children his whole life. He may be intimidating to small children because he is large and gets very excited to be with people. He does have a heart condition that is well controlled with 25 mg of atenolol: half a tablet twice daily. I am not in a hurry to rehome him, but I am concerned for his continued long term health and safety given his behavior when left crated and constant food scavanging. He is 5 years old.
