KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING &/OR CRATING: he is ok with a crate and is house trained, KNOWN LIKES: Exploring, walking, sniffing, stuffed toys and most of all belly rubs. KNOWN DISLIKES: Not a fan of other dogs with positive reinforcement he is improving SNOWY IS SEEKING A LIFELONG SNUGGLE PARTNER: Occupation: Full-time Cuddle Specialist Interests: Hugs, belly rubs, snacks, showing off his toys Snowy is the kind of dog who believes snuggling should be considered a competitive sport — and he’s going for gold. His signature move is the classic full-body lean, where he melts into you like warm butter on toast. He gives big, honest hugs and expects nothing more in return than a few scratches and maybe a compliment. When Snowy’s happy (which is often), he proudly parades around with a toy in his mouth, his whole backside wiggling like it has its own opinion. It’s nearly impossible not to grin when he does it. His Strengths: * Excellent house manners: house-trained, crate-trained, quiet, polite * Smart, food-motivated, knows a number of commands * Loves kids and is great in the car *Charming and unintentionally hilarious just by being himself His Hobbies: * Cuddling on any available human * Sunbathing * Enjoying enrichment games *Trotting around with toys * Greeting visitors like they’re there specifically to admire him Areas He’s Working On: Snowy is learning to walk past other dogs calmly. With treats and practice, he’s doing well. He prefers being the only pet — easier to keep all the attention that way. Ideal Match: Someone who enjoys a silly, snuggly dog with good manners and a big heart. He’ll do best in a suburban setting where dogs aren’t constantly popping up to say hello. If you want a cheerful, affectionate, goofy companion who gives world-class hugs and makes every day better, Snowy would love to meet you. Ready to meet your new best friend? Snowy is waiting! Story
Zoey's previous foster shared that she is a loving golden retriever. She is very affectionate once she gets to know you. Zoey is always happy to sit and sleep right at your feet while you are home. She is house trained and if left alone will tirelessly look out the window waiting for your return. She walks well, but has a small prey drive. Someone has to keep those nosy squirrels from interrupting her owner's walk. She's always up to play games. You will know when she wants to play as she'll bring her tug-o-war rope to your chair or drop tennis balls on your lap for some quality fetch time. She is a bit of an alpha dog and plays well with some dogs but not others. With that being the case, we think she would do better as a solo dog in the home or a slow controlled introduction if there are other pets. Please let us know if you would like to meet Zoey A! She walks nicely into the crate without treats. KNOWN LIKES: Long sniffy walks, toys, people who meet her at her own speed, treats, learning new things. KNOWN DISLIKES: People who move too fast with her. ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: ADOPTION FEE: WAIVED! I'M PART OF THE REWARDS PROGRAM AND MY ADOPTION FEE HAS ALREADY BEEN PAID. WE WILL ALSO PAY MY FOSTER OR ADOPTER $500. HT has a number of dogs that need very special homes. These dogs have been failed by humans along the way, leaving them homeless and with issues from their treatment. We'll be honest. Some of them are real jerks. But not always. And not to everyone. Not everyone can be charming ALL the time, right? Others are just fearful and don't like other animals because they have had a bad interaction at some point. Some of them love other dogs but are just plain scared of everything. But all of them are good on the inside. And we believe that ALL of them deserve a chance at life and love. And we're looking to find the right human out there to make that happen. But competition is tough. And they're up against small, well-behaved doggies...so we are offering incentives for special humans willing to give these pooches a chance. WE WANT YOU! ***We are paying $500 to any approved foster or adopter of our REWARDS dogs.*** The human will also get ongoing training support, all supplies covered and a $25 Amazon gift card each month for 6 months. You will learn and grow. You will be doing a world of good for a dog who has really had it rough in life. After living in one home her whole life, Nala's owners lost their housing and she unfortunately came back to Homeward Trails. Nala initially felt stressed being back at the shelter after living her whole life with one family, but she's already won over our staff and showed just how smart she is and how cuddly she can be when she gets to know new pals. Help Nala take the next step in her journey and stop by to meet her this weekend! Story
Meet Steve!   This sweet Retriever Mix boy was found running as a stray with his siblings in Chester, SC, back in June 2025. They were just puppies and were likely abandoned. With patience and kindness, their finders earned their trust and brought them to safety in their backyard. After six months living mostly outdoors, they reached out to our rescue for help finding loving homes for Steve and his sister, Henrietta. The siblings are now in separate foster homes, learning all about life indoors, and both are truly flourishing. Steve has been in his foster home for almost three weeks. At first, he was shy and shut down - home life, everyday noises, collars, and leash walks were all completely new to him. The backyard he lived in for those six months was the only home he had ever known. He is fortunate to be fostered by seasoned foster mom Cindy, who has helped many dogs successfully transition to home life. We are happy to share that Steve already has good house manners, has mastered the doggy door, and has solid leash skills. With practice and exposure, he’s grown more confident on leash and is comfortable walking in neighborhoods as well as on trails. He does well meeting new people and dogs and is a naturally sweet boy. Cindy shared this update: “Steve has really come a long way in a short time. He’s great with our grandkids and lets them pet him when they visit. He doesn’t run from them as he did in the beginning. He’ll come up to me for affection and is still building confidence, but you can tell he wants to connect and really wants to be petted and sit with you on the couch. I think after a few months with a family, he’ll be a completely different dog. He may not be the dog who immediately falls all over you when you first meet him, but once he builds trust, he chooses to be near you. He even waits for me when I come home and gets so excited to see me. For the most part, Steve is a calm, easygoing boy in the home. He truly lights up when he has another dog to play with; outside, he loves to run and play chase. He needs a confident, playful dog to follow and learn from. There isn’t an aggressive bone in his body; you can take away toys, treats, and he’s gentle with the kids.” Steve is a gentle, sweet, submissive soul with a medium energy level. He’s done well with the senior dog in his foster home and visiting family dogs. Because he learns by watching and following other dogs, we believe he would do best in a home with another social, established dog as a role model. Preference will be given to families with another dog in the home. This handsome boy is blossoming more each day and will make a wonderful family dog and loyal companion. Coming to the DC metro area in February, and would prefer he go directly home. Open to foster-to-adopt. Preference will be given to families with another dog in the home.  BREED ESTIMATE: Retriever/Terrier mix  GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 55 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: ~1 year old COAT TYPE:  Scruffy, wiry, medium coat - lower shed  ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: UTD on shots/neutered/microchipped LOCATION: Ft. Story
Meet Henrietta!  This sweet, doodle girl was spotted running as a stray with her siblings in Chester, SC, in June 2025. They were just puppies at the time, and we believe they had been abandoned there. With patience and time, their finders earned their trust, and once they did, the pups followed them home and into the yard for safety. For the next few months, Henrietta lived primarily outdoors in the finders’ backyard, coming inside during inclement weather. The family found a home for one of her siblings and reached out to rescue to ensure Henrietta and her brother, Steve, would also find safe, loving homes. While they are good buddies, Henrietta and Steve are now in separate foster homes, learning about home life and building their confidence, and both are doing well.  Henrietta has been in her foster home for almost a month and is learning to trust and come out of her shell. At first, she was shy and shut down; home life, everyday noises, collars, and leash walks were all completely new to her. The backyard she lived in for those six months was the only home she had ever known. She is fortunate to be fostered by seasoned fosters Laine and Gary, along with their pack of three dogs, who have helped many fosters successfully transition to family dog. Henrietta is very submissive and quickly found her place in the pack, learning by watching and following the older dogs. Because of this, we believe she would do best in a home with another social. established dog who can be a role model. In return, she will make an excellent pack member. While she’s still shy around sudden loud noises and quick movements, Henrietta has started to engage with Laine and Gary and is not fearful of people, just shy. She is a very sweet soul with a gentle nature and doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, but she does need time to trust and get comfortable with new things.  She has a medium energy level, with the occasional zoomies, but overall is quite moderate for a young pup. She crates well and has already shown good house manners. Henrietta has started going on pack walks now, and while her tail was tucked initially, she gets more confident with every exposure. Henrietta loves soft, comfy beds and toys and feels most confident when she’s part of a pack. This sweet girl continues to blossom each day and is going to make a wonderful family dog and loyal companion. Coming to the DC metro area in February and would prefer she go directly home Open to foster-to-adopt. Preference will be given to families with another dog in the home.  Apply today!
