Story
Meet Daphne Daphne’s story started in a south Georgia kill shelter after she was picked up as a stray. When Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love was asked to take her, everyone had the same first thought: “That’s not a Dane… that’s a pit bull mix!” Well… turns out everyone was right. AND wrong. A DNA test revealed Daphne is 53% Great Dane, 23% Pit Bull, and 100% unforgettable. At around 10 months old, she arrived with absolutely no manners, no training, no boundaries, and enough energy to power a small city. To put it kindly… Daphne was chaos in a tiny giant-dog body. She bulldozed through life at full speed. “No” meant nothing. “Kennel” might as well have been spoken in another language. She played too rough, had zero leash skills, panicked in a crate, and believed every human and dog existed solely for her excitement. She’s stubborn, intense, wildly smart, and came equipped with a prey drive that could rival a professional athlete. But here’s the thing about Daphne: She WANTS to learn. With patience, consistency, structure, and a foster family determined not to give up on her, Daphne transformed. Once she understood boundaries and trust, everything changed. Now? Say “Kennel,” and she sprints across the house, hops in, sits politely, and waits for her treat. She walks nicely on leash, plays appropriately with other dogs, and responds when called out of overstimulation. She’s still active and needs continued structure, but this girl has come SO far. And underneath all that wild energy? She is the biggest love bug imaginable. After exercise, Daphne turns into a full-blown “Lap Goblin.” She doesn’t just cuddle — she climbs directly into your lap, lays across your chest, gives rapid-fire kisses, and falls asleep snoring within minutes. She follows her people everywhere, complete with constant little nose boops on the back of your legs. She’s goofy. Athletic. Velcro-level affectionate. Equal parts adventure partner and oversized baby. Daphne needs an active home committed to continuing her training and giving her outlets for her energy. Hiking buddy? Fetch fanatic? Jogging partner? Rugby teammate? Full-contact roller derby assistant? Daphne is ALL IN. And at the end of the day, she’ll happily cash in all that energy for couch cuddles and kisses. If you’re looking for a smart, hilarious, all-heart dog that will love you with everything she’s got… Daphne is waiting. ❤️*****Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love covers NC and surrounding states for adoptions. Story
✨ Meet Gertrude — “Gertie” to her friends ✨ Gertie is the kind of dog who quietly works her way into your heart and stays there forever. With her stunning orange eyes, gentle soul, and sweet, cautious nature, Gertie is truly a diamond in the rough. Life has not always been kind to her, and while that has made her careful with new people, it has never stopped her from wanting love. She just needs a little time to believe it’s safe. If you move too fast, Gertie will retreat. But if you let her observe you, approach on her own terms, and build trust at her pace, you will discover the most loving, loyal little shadow imaginable. Once you are officially part of Gertie’s circle, prepare for kisses, cuddles, and a constant companion who always wants to know where her people are. And yes — sliced cheese helps tremendously. Gertie is still learning that the world is not such a scary place. Leash walking remains a journey, and sometimes Point A to Point B includes a dramatic pancake flop in protest. But every day she gets a little braver, a little more confident, and a little more willing to trust. Her foster siblings have become her emotional support crew, helping her discover that adventures can actually be fun. She enjoys car rides when her dog friends come too, though stepping out into the “big world” still takes courage. Like any true Dane puppy, Gertie is equal parts gentle giant and tiny velociraptor. She loves with her whole face — literally. She is still learning that affection does not require using her mouth, but every goofy nibble and awkward love chomp comes from pure happiness. At home, Gertie thrives on companionship. She loves wrestling in the yard, evening zoomies, naps near her people, and keeping a close eye on everyone she loves. Very close. If you are searching for independence, Gertie may not be your girl. If you want a Velcro dog who thinks your presence is the greatest thing on earth? Perfect match. She is kennel trained, mostly trustworthy with free roam, and only occasionally believes your socks belong to her now. Gertie needs a patient, understanding home willing to let her bloom in her own time. She does not need perfection. She needs kindness, consistency, and someone who sees the beautiful dog she already is underneath the uncertainty. And for the person willing to give her that chance? You will gain one of the sweetest, softest, most devoted companions imaginable. ❤️ Gertie is being fostered in Fort Mill, SC Email: info@greatdanefriends.com for an application*****Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love covers NC and surrounding states for adoptions. Story
Meet Juniper — your gentle giant with a heart full of hope Juniper (or “Juni” to her friends) is a beautiful 2–5-year-old Great Dane who’s been on quite the journey. Found as a stray and brought into rescue last September, she’s spent the past several months discovering something truly special—what it means to feel safe, loved, and at home. At first, the world can still feel a little big and scary to Juniper. But give her a little patience and kindness, and you’ll watch something magical happen. Her confidence blossoms, her tail starts to wag, and before you know it, she’s leaning in for snuggles like a 100-pound lap dog who simply must have your affection. Juni has been around kids of all ages and a wide variety of people. While she may be a bit shy at first, she warms up into the sweetest, silliest companion who will absolutely steal your heart. She’s learning every day that life is full of joy—zoomies, playtime, cozy naps, and the comfort of her people. Her perfect home? One with: • A friendly canine sibling to show her the ropes and share in playtime and cuddles • Humans who are around often or love including their dog in daily adventures • A patient, loving family willing to continue building her confidence and skills Juniper is still a work in progress, but she’s eager to please and thrives with consistency and encouragement. For someone willing to give her the time she deserves, she will repay you tenfold with loyalty, love, and plenty of goofy Great Dane charm. If you’re looking for a sweet, soulful companion who will grow with you and fill your home with love, Juniper is ready to meet her forever family.    *****Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love covers NC and surrounding states for adoptions. Story
Hi!  My name is Archer but my foster mom calls me Archie.  I'm a smart boy and answer to both names.   I was born on November 19, 2018 which means I'll be 7years old soon.   I act very young for my age and love to go for short walks (I walk very nicely on a leash) and especially love car rides.  I play very enthusiastically with my foster sister who is only 2 years old.  There are 3 cats in the house but I ignore them.  I have been to PetSmart and Lowes and have done really well.  I'm still a little hesitant of big men and of little kids ( kids 12 yrs and up would be best) but we are working on that!  When they are around I like to hide behind mom!  I'm a very smart boy and know all my basic commands but don't really like the STAY one.  I'm potty trained and trustworthy in the house but would prefer being with you to being left behind.  I had some skin issues, ear infections and eye infections when I arrived but those are all clear now. I am a super sweet boy who is looking for a soft place to land...a FOREVER home of my own!  Please consider this sweetest older boy.  Archer is being fostered in Jacksonville NC.  If interested in adopting please email us at info@greatdanefriends.com for an application. *****Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love covers NC and surrounding states for adoptions. Story
Hello GDFRL Fans – Chauncey here! Foster Mom has been quite remiss in providing any updates on me - she says sorry! I tried to type one up myself but the keyboard just wasn’t made for paws my size so all I managed was this – ;lp/asdvb fgdp;iÒÚ¿;lsedf – which isn’t too informative. A reminder of my back story - I came to GDFRL this summer from an SC shelter. I was originally found earlier this year with my muzzle tied shut. My owner paid the fine and took me home only to drive me out into the middle of nowhere earlier this summer, tie me to a tree, and abandon me. Foster Mom says besides the physical scars, I have some emotional scars from him. Car rides cause me some anxiety because I’m not 100% sure if I am going to be abandoned again and sometimes I have to use my big bark when strangers come around because I don’t know if they will be nice to me. FM says I don’t have to worry and she’s going to prove to me that most people are kind and they are going to love me and pet me and give me toys and treats. This really nice lady named Caitlin, who FM says is a wonderful trainer, is going to be working with us so I can meet all these nice people and become the bravest, bestest boy. At home, I have a foster sister who is a third of my size but boy is she tough. We like to wrestle and play and steal toys from each other. There’s kitties at my foster home too, but they get me a bit too excited so I’m not allowed to play with them. Foster Mom says my forever family probably shouldn’t include kitty siblings good for chasing or little pups – ‘cuz she says I’m clumsy and they’re squishable. I am an in-your-face, always by your side kind of guy, so I’m hoping my forever family understands their space is my space, too. FM says I’m also very verbal - what can I say - I have opinions and sometimes she is way slow on serving up dinner. I do try to be a good boy though, and practice my “sit and wait” while she’s mixing up my food. Foster Mom says that sometimes I get a little too mouthy with things, so I have my own room when mom is gone all day. I know what “go to your room” means and I will open the baby gate and run in there and wait for my good boy treat. I have been a naughty boy lately though ‘cuz the mattress is so nice to chew on and is more of a fun challenge than those easy-to-shred dog beds. Foster mom says I should be chewing on all my tug toys or my security jolly ball that I like to mouth – what can I say, it calms me! So here’s what me and foster mom think my perfect forever family would be: – One or two fur siblings to play with who are medium to large dogs. I’ve only met another dane through a fence, and he didn’t really like me, so I didn’t get to try to play with him. – A calmer home that is willing to keep working with me on meeting new people as I learn that I will be protected and people will be nice to me. – No little kids – I just don’t understand the difference between my 158 lbs and little kids a fraction of my size. I’ll want to play with them and mom thinks they will be squished. And the details: – Housetrained – Neutered and up-to-date on vaccine – Has been good with the medium-sized dogs he has met - male and female – No kitties - he is too interested in them and will give chase – Kids 12+ ***Chauncey is being fostered in Asheville NC. Story
Hi! My name is Lucy and I am eight months old. I want to introduce myself and tell you my story. Introductions can be awkward for me, because I’m a shy girl, but I’ve been working on that, and my therapists, er, foster friends, tell me that I’m a good girl and a brave girl and a sweet girl, and I’m just gonna do it! So here goes. Way back last year, I was taken away from my mommy too early and brought to a very noisy, scary place that had a lot of other dogs including all of my brothers and sisters. Luckily, I didn’t have to stay long, because some nice people brought me to a house where I got to live with my brother. Then he got adopted. In fact, all of my brothers and sisters have been adopted. So now, it’s just me. But that’s okay. Because I’m a nice girl and a fun girl and a cuddly girl and I know that someday my family will find me and I will get adopted too. I know I’m not a big girl like the other Great Danes in my play group. But there are a lot of advantages to being a mixed breed. Like, I can fit in any car. Even a Pinto. And I won’t take up a lot of room on the couch. I don’t eat as much or cost as much. I also have stamina. So if you like to run or hike, I won’t need a nap after five minutes. No giant breed experience needed to adopt me either. I’m like a travel sized Dane with a big personality and a wiggly butt! Okay, so about me. I LOVE to play. Especially with dogs! I love all the dogs I’ve met and would love to have a sister or brother. I like fetch, walks, toys, and car rides. I’m a smart girl too. I'm already crate trained and know some commands. If you like to teach tricks, I would love to learn. Also, I’m loyal. Once we’re friends, we’re friends for life! And I will always stand by, just in case you need my help. For instance, if you need someone to snuggle with and watch Netflix, I'm your girl. I can be shy, but I can also be bribed, so treats are a great way to get to know me better! I’m not sure why my family hasn’t found me yet, but I know they’re out there somewhere. Maybe they’ve been on vacation or something. So if you could share this message, and help me find my people, I would sure appreciate it! *Lucy is being fostered in Cary, NC. She is UTD on shots and spayed. She will require a fenced yard. She has never lived with cats, but could be tested.  A fenced yard is required.  Currently fostered in Cary, NC Interested in adopting Lucy?
