Story
Enzo is a 5 yr old Male Pyrenees. We are seeking an experienced dog handler who is confident and loving to care for our special boy. He is very large and does well with a confident yet loving handler. He does not like a lot of activity. He is very laid back. He does not like delivery drivers and will bark when someone is around that he does not know. He would do well on a farm or in a space large enough to accommodate him. One walk a day is usually enough for him. Serious inquiries only. It is difficult to let him go but we will feel better knowing his new owner will care for and love him.

Story
02/22/26 12:16 MHMeet Willow, a cautious and curious girl with a gentle heart and lots of personality.Willow is initially shy and careful around people, often keeping her distance at first, but she warms up with patience. She enjoys sniffing hands and allows gentle pets, and she knows sit, responding well to treats and positive encouragement. She’s comfortable being leashed and walked, though she may prefer slower, sniff-filled walks and the security of a confident handler.Willow has shown dog reactivity, including lunging or barking at other dogs through fences or on walks. She’s sometimes uncertain around other dogs but can show curiosity and brief friendly interest if guided carefully. Because of this, she’ll do best in a home without other dogs or with slow, structured introductions.Willow would thrive with: A patient adopter experienced with shy or reactive dogsPositive reinforcement and gentle guidanceCalm, structured walks and safe enrichmentTime and space to build confidence at her own paceWillow is a sweet, treat-motivated girl who rewards patience with affection, sniffy exploration, and gentle companionship. With the right adopter, she can continue gaining confidence and blossom into a loyal, loving friend.

Story
Meet Maya, the Great Pyrenees mix. Maya’s previous guardian reported that she was an indoor dog who enjoyed sleeping on the couch. Maya has lived with cats previously and did well. Any feline friends in the next home should be introduced slowly and thoughtfully. Maya has been a bit shy since her entry to the Shelter, which is common. She has lived with young children and has been reported to be social with strangers previously. We anticipate Maya will blossom after decompressing from the Shelter and transitioning to her adoptive home. Maya may do well in a home with another dog provided there is a meet and greet at the Shelter prior to adoption. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Huckleberry, the Great Pyrenees! Huckleberry arrived at the Shelter as a stray with a Belgian Malinois friend (aptly named Finn). Huckleberry has been been a fairly typical livestock guardian breed – initially aloof and interested in his environment but warms up and bonds to people.. becoming more animated and goofy. He has done well meeting and interacting with other dogs. Huckleberry is looking for a breed savvy adoptive home that can meet his day to day needs.. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet at the Shelter. Finn could be adopted with his pal Huckleberry but it is not required. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption.
