Adopt Athena! This beautiful puppy is a great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. She was a litter of 12 and we are able to help eight of them. 4 were given away by the owners. The owners had several dogs who were not fixed and had an accidental litter. Athena is a very sweet dog who loves to play and will be a bigger dog as she grows. She’s going to be a loyal companion and has been around farm animals/dogs. She was great with kids and a very great temperament. Meet Peepo, the Grey Pyrenees! This big guy came to the Shelter with some other dogs after their previous guardian was unable to continue caring for them. Peepo was a working dog in a ranch with a couple of other dogs. He has been around a variety of farm animals and may thrive as a livestock guardian dog in his next home. He has been outdoors with other dogs (herding breeds) and does not have experience indoors. A companion animal home may be in his future but adopters may need to be patient in Peepo’s transition to indoor living with things like potty training and other “house rules”. Staff have observed that Peepo has been calm and quiet in his kennel. When out in the yards with other dogs, he lounges and relaxes. Peepo has lived with other dogs and has made friends with other dogs since arriving at the Shelter. A home with canine companions may be a fit. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Bear is a 5-year-old Great Pyrenees looking for a new home and family to protect. He grew up with 4 small children, one other dog, and a big, fenced-in yard that backed up to a large field full of coyotes and wild boars. He loved to run the perimeter and bark, scaring off all sorts of threats. However, due to my job, we recently moved into an apartment community with no yard. Despite our best efforts, our new living situation has proven to be unsuitable for Bear, and he is not living the life kind of life that he deserves. He needs a house with a yard, and he needs to be able to bark. He is very loving and gentle with his family, but very territorial and protective, and will bark aggressively at any strangers or animals approaching the house. We want him to have a good life, and are willing to drive any distance to deliver him to a good home. He would make an excellent farm dog, and was bred to be a livestock protector! Please consider letting Bear join your family.

Story

Let me introduce you to Cleo, our sweet, soulful Great Pyrenees mix who weighs about 70 pounds. She’s not just a pretty face (though her big brown eyes will melt you); she’s also incredibly smart. She watches everything and picks up on new things quickly—she already knows how to sit, stay, lay down, and “leave it,” and she’s learning more in doggie school every week. Cleo is potty trained and a great passenger in the car. At night, she sleeps soundly on our bed, curled up like she owns the place—and honestly, we don’t mind one bit. We haven’t tried her in a crate since the one we have is too small for her, but she’s been just fine without it. She loves chasing squirrels and once lunged at a neighbor’s cat—she thought it was just another squirrel in disguise—so a cat-free home is definitely best for her. She enjoys playing with other big dogs, but she’d also be perfectly content as the only dog in the house, soaking up all the love. At training, she’s been around small dogs and done well, but since everyone is on a leash there, we can’t say for sure how she’d be in an off-leash setting. She’s up to date on all her shots, and her spay is scheduled for the end of September. Cleo is one of the gentlest, most loving dogs we’ve ever had the joy of knowing. She’s not big on licking faces, but every now and then, she’ll surprise you with a kiss. She really is something special.
