Story
Meet Maya, the Pyrenees breed mix. Maya originally came into the Shelter as an owner surrender. She was indoors only and enjoyed sleeping on the couch. She lived in a home with young children (as young as 2 years old). She enjoyed going for walks in her home. Maya spent a few months in an adoptive home that, ultimately, was not the best fit. Maya is looking for a dog-savvy adopter that will give her the time and patience to transition to her adoptive home. She can be stoic and reserved when first meeting people but after some time, softens into a bubbly, playful gal. Maya would thrive with an engaging adopter who will provide her mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Maya enjoys the company of other dogs but, typically to livestock guardian breeds, can be reactive at barriers or on her person’s property. Adopters should plan to do some breed research to ensure that they have the resources to care for Maya. A home free of young children and small animals (rabbits, felines) is required as Maya can be a bit of an exuberant gal when she is excited and has demonstrated some prey drive in a prior home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Rio, is it good loving dog. We got him for my grandson when he was just six weeks old. He is now 5 years old. Such a good loving dog. It's very hard to give him up. But at this time, I'm unable to care for him, like I did. I'd had 2 neck surgeries. and have to have back surgery. I just really want a good home for him. Someone that's gonna love him like I love him or even more. Granny

Story
Adopt Athena! This beautiful puppy is a great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. She was a litter of 12 and we are able to help eight of them. 4 were given away by the owners. The owners had several dogs who were not fixed and had an accidental litter. Athena is a very sweet dog who loves to play and will be a bigger dog as she grows. She’s going to be a loyal companion and has been around farm animals/dogs. She was great with kids and a very great temperament. She is located in San Martin California and we would love for you to meet her. To apply please use our adoption application located on our website.March 8, 2026, 12:21 am

Story
Daisy May is a dog that loves everything. Belly rubs? Loves. Sticks? Loves. Daisy May will drag branches around her yard and loves being the queen of the hill. She plays hide and seek, although she isn't great at the hiding part. She is a great dog for an experienced adopter who loves a little adventure and fun. Daisy May suffers from anxiety and is currently on medication for this. When Daisy May feels anxious, overwhelmed, or frustrated she gets very mouthy towards her handler. Daisy May responds well to anti-anxiety medication to help reduce this behavior, however any big transitions in her life (such as changing homes), tends to cause it to recur more frequently. Daisy May is currently seeing a veterinary behaviorist and we are hopeful to see continued improvements with treatment over time, however Daisy May is only appropriate at this time to go home to a very experienced adopter. Daisy May has a lot of energy that she needs worked out with walks, adventures, or playing with other dogs. She likes chasing, tug, and agility play. Daisy May does well with other dogs and cats with slow introductions. She's even met turtles. Daisy May is spayed, up to date on all vaccines, and chipped. All Better World Rescue dogs come with complimentary group or private training. If you're interested in meeting Daisy May, fill out an application and a volunteer will reach out. www.betterworldrescue.org/adoption-application
