Story
Raven was about a year old when she initially came to SAAP. She was in a foster home for about a month and did well. She was adopted in 2019 by a lovely gentleman and became his best girl!! This was her home practically her whole life!! Raven was happy and thriving!  Then in 2025 her whole world was turned upside down. The only family she probably ever remembers had to return her to SAAP because her lovely gentleman passed away. She lived with him mostly her whole life and now her world has shifted tremendously!! None of his extended family could take her because they had pets of their own and Raven, having spent so much time as “the best girl” really didn’t get time around other dogs or cats.  Of course, SAAP took her back in. At the time she returned there were no Available fosters so she was staying with one of our boarding partners. Although she was cared for very well, Raven was very stressed out, sad and lost weight! She didn’t understand all the changes happening in her life!! She’s now in a foster home and even though she is thriving and learning new things and meeting new people, Raven longs for her furever home, this time hopefully for the rest of her life. She is an adorable girl!! So smart, so sweet and loves every single human she meets!!  She is listed as a Lab/Retriever and she will play fetch forever but she is built like a Greyhound or a Whippet and can run with the best of them!! She corrects very well and knows several commands and learns very quickly!! She barks at the TV when she sees a dog, which is hilarious!! She also “talks” at us if we can’t figure out what she wants!! She’s really funny!! She truly is the perfect dog!! Let’s turn her sad story into a happily ever after and make 2026 RAVEN’s YEAR!! If you read this share it, bump it comment on it!! Help us help Raven!! #letsraveaboutraven      January 17, 2026, 8:57 am

Story
Lizzie Beth has started her training in her foster home. But as her foster mom, I wanted to show daily life with Lizzie. Several people have applied, but Lizzie needs a really special home. Lizzie Beth came to SAAP with her sister. Both are semi feral but mostly terrified. Lizzie Beth came to us at the end of October. Her & her sister replied too heavily on one another so to further help them, they were separated. Lizzie has warmed up to 2 people in our house of 5. She seems to rely heavily on adult women. Kids are scary and men are absolutely terrifying! But Lizzie LOVES all dogs. She has yet to find a dog she doesn’t love. Older dogs can be easily exhausted by her energy. So she’ll need a playful, younger fur buddy. She loves cats and mostly wants to sniff them and be near them. She’s truly fascinated by them. (But never harms them) Lizzie still bolts from foster mom around the house and has kept me in shape from trying to catch her. We’ve begun using cheese to get entice her (& get her to eat from my hand) and a drag leash so she’s easy to grab. I forgot to put one on before her potty break and well…Lizzie really enjoyed the snow for a while! She also has a bad habit of nibbling holes in pillow cases, blankets, socks, slippers…etc. (ask me how I know ) BUT Lizzie Beth is SO sweet and snuggly. When it’s just foster mom, she will sleep on top of me or right beside me. She loves her furry foster siblings and cuddles with them too. To summarize: if you are interested in Lizzie Beth she needs the following (as far as we know at this time, it has taken several months for her to start to open up) -older kids. Young kids are scary and their toys are tasty -preferably no men, this might change but currently her foster dad is unable to handle her in the home and she usually runs from him. (Foster dad is sad as 95% of fosters all love him instantly) -Younger, social dogs in the home okay with play. -Patience because potty training is ruff and Lizzie takes time to open up. I know this is long but let me know if you have questions!  March 8, 2025, 5:55 pm

Story
Sandy is a beautiful mix of fluff.  Part Lab, part Yeti? Who's to say for sure. This gorgeous girl is 80+ pounds of love. As a senior, she has earned a life of leisure. She's looking for a home with plenty of comfy places to nap. Sandy is petrified of fireworks, and storms. She will need anti-anxiety meds. Combining fear with a healthy dose of curiosity which tempts her to explore, we strongly recommend Sandy have a yard with a high fence.  Our girl loves her some food and treats, and being tall has absolutely no problems countersurfing, so she'll need a door or an extra tall gate to keep her out of the kitchen.  Sandy gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home, but she does get growly when there are too many in close proximity.  She came to SAAP with some skin issues, but is all healed and looking for her forever home.April 29, 2025, 8:13 pm

Story
Marie Curie is a beautiful, lanky black colored lab mix that weighs approximately 38lbs. She is looking for a very patient adopter as she is very timid and shy around people. We are not sure if she suffered some abuse and/or neglect. She's gaining more courage and trust in humans and her surroundings daily but this is still a work in progress! For example, when I first got her, she would dart away from me when I approach her to pet her. She acts like she wants to be loved but is nervous to surrender. So she keeps her guard up. She is starting to let me approach her without running to give her head rubs!! It’s not 100% perfect but definitely getting better! When I catch her and put her on the couch with me, she is stiff at first and then will loosen up. Marie is clean and in the crate and working hard on potty training. She is also learning how to be a dog! She is playing with her foster siblings and is very submissive with other dogs and just a genuinely sweet soul. Thus far, she just ignores the resident cat. Marie would do best in a fenced yard as she still needs to work on leash training and more socialization. She can be timid to come back in the house when I am standing at the door so I have to walk away for her to come in. She would also benefit from basic training. Lastly, given her timid nature, Marie would do best with another confident dog in the home. She does better when she can follow the lead of another dog and they can teach her the ropes.  Are you willing to teach Marie what it means to be loved? If so, submit an application. She deserves a loving forever home! In time, I know she will be the best version of herself!       November 28, 2024, 12:01 pm

Story
Biscuit is an adorable young doodle who has been with her foster family for almost a year with the exception of a brief adoption. We have learned a lot about her over this past year after she came to us emaciated and terrified from a rural Kentucky shelter. After she was diagnosed with Megaesophagus and appropriate feeding protocols were put in place, Biscuit gained weight and blossomed. She is fostered in a busy home with kids, dogs and cats and has done well with all in her foster home. We did find out that she is cat selective when she was adopted, but honestly she’s a dog that needs a playful dog friend to help her expend all her crazy doodle energy (after proper introductions). She leaves the many cats alone in her foster home. Biscuit still has some puppy energy and manners.    She gets a little mouthy when excited, but she is just the sweetest girl. She absolutely loves her people and would be a wonderful addition to any family. She is available for our foster to adopt program, and foster mom will be happy to provide education in her current feeding regimen and lifetime support.  November 21, 2025, 9:32 pm

Say hello to Zoey! Though she’s a senior, don’t let her age fool you. Zoey loves to play with squeaky toys and tennis balls. This sweet girl was surrendered through no fault of her own, and she’s ready for a fresh start with a new family. Zoey is crate and house trained, making her an easy addition to any family. She has lived with dogs, cats and children. Zoey would thrive best in a home with a yard, so she can run and play as freely as she desires. If you’re looking for a dog with experience, Zoey is your match!

Old Yeller, is that a new trend? Old stuff made NEW?? Cause I am NOT old, although I am Yeller, a really pretty YELLER COLOR!!! :) I am a Yeller Chesapeake bay retriever/ YELLER lab mix, it is important for my new family to know about the Chesapeake bay breed. We can be very stubborn, smart and independent and I really like to be in charge, so my new family needs to be strong leaders too. I am a handsome bloke, with swirls of yellow and white all through my coat. I am very smart and very sweet. I can from a high kill shelter with no hope- Now I EXUDE hope!! And LOVE!!! I WAS heartworm positive but have already finished the treatment and am NEGATIVE and just stay on prevention for the rest of my life. I am good with other dogs, but really would be best in an only dog home, cause I want all the attention :) I LOVE MY people and I tend to take "control" of my home so have to have a couple of things... 1) STRONG leadership owner, 2) I have to have an owner who will be wiling to not let me meet everyone who visits.. I want to protect my home a little too much... and 3) I have to stay in the San Antonio/TX area so my rescue friends can keep close tabs on me and how i am doing :) I have been running and playing since I am safe, but really am a couch potato. I am a bigger boy and about 65-70#. Look me up, get my number, text or call me OR just APPLY to ADOPT ME!!! I will be waiting by the phone!!! Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX)
