Story
I have a playful, good-natured, and energetic dog named Tucker who’s full of life and love, but unfortunately, I’m looking for a new home for him. Tucker is the kind of dog who can turn any day around with his wagging tail, bright eyes, and endless enthusiasm. He loves playing fetch, going for walks, and being part of whatever’s happening. He’s friendly with people and other pets, and after he’s had his fun, he’s just as happy to relax by your side. Tucker deserves a home where he can get plenty of attention, exercise, and affection—a place where his joyful, loving spirit can continue to shine.

Story
Meet Balsam: Your Future Professional Cuddle Buddy! Looking for a shadow to follow you through life? Meet Balsam, a sleek, black Lab mix puppy who is as sweet and steady as the tree she’s named after. While she might be a little shy at first, once you win her heart, you have a best friend for life. The Perfect Home Life Balsam is a low-drama girl who appreciates the finer things in life—like a soft couch and a good view. The Ultimate Napper: She is a certified cuddle bug. If you’re on the couch, she wants to be right there with you. Window Watcher: She loves spending her quiet time looking out the window, watching the world go by. Crate Fan: Unlike many pups, Balsam actually enjoys her crate! It’s her safe space where she goes to recharge. Potty Training: She is doing great with housebreaking! As long as she gets frequent trips outside, she’s a total pro. Social Butterfly (Dog Edition!) While Balsam is a bit timid with humans at first, she absolutely glows around other dogs. The Perfect Follower: She isn’t looking to be the boss; she’s a "follower" who takes her cues from more confident dogs. Versatile Friend: She currently lives with a tiny Chihuahua foster sister and a big Pit Bull foster sister—she loves them both equally! Nice to Have: Because she relies so much on canine companionship for confidence, she would truly thrive in a home with another dog. Cat Friendly: Thanks to her gentle, soft nature, we believe she would do wonderfully with feline friends as well. &#226&#156&#168 Personality & Quirks The Zoomies: She may be a sleeper, but she’s still a puppy! Expect some adorable "all-black-blur" zoomies when she’s feeling happy. Slow & Steady: She needs a patient family who understands that she takes a little time to warm up to new people. Once she trusts you, she is all in. Summary: Balsam is a gentle, submissive, and loving soul looking for a patient family and a dog sibling to show her the ropes. December 22, 2025, 7:28 pm

Story
Lizzie Beth has started her training in her foster home. But as her foster mom, I wanted to show daily life with Lizzie. Several people have applied, but Lizzie needs a really special home. Lizzie Beth came to SAAP with her sister. Both are semi feral but mostly terrified. Lizzie Beth came to us at the end of October. Her & her sister replied too heavily on one another so to further help them, they were separated. Lizzie has warmed up to 2 people in our house of 5. She seems to rely heavily on adult women. Kids are scary and men are absolutely terrifying! But Lizzie LOVES all dogs. She has yet to find a dog she doesn’t love. Older dogs can be easily exhausted by her energy. So she’ll need a playful, younger fur buddy. She loves cats and mostly wants to sniff them and be near them. She’s truly fascinated by them. (But never harms them) Lizzie still bolts from foster mom around the house and has kept me in shape from trying to catch her. We’ve begun using cheese to get entice her (& get her to eat from my hand) and a drag leash so she’s easy to grab. I forgot to put one on before her potty break and well…Lizzie really enjoyed the snow for a while! She also has a bad habit of nibbling holes in pillow cases, blankets, socks, slippers…etc. (ask me how I know ) BUT Lizzie Beth is SO sweet and snuggly. When it’s just foster mom, she will sleep on top of me or right beside me. She loves her furry foster siblings and cuddles with them too. To summarize: if you are interested in Lizzie Beth she needs the following (as far as we know at this time, it has taken several months for her to start to open up) -older kids. Young kids are scary and their toys are tasty -preferably no men, this might change but currently her foster dad is unable to handle her in the home and she usually runs from him. (Foster dad is sad as 95% of fosters all love him instantly) -Younger, social dogs in the home okay with play. -Patience because potty training is ruff and Lizzie takes time to open up. I know this is long but let me know if you have questions!  March 8, 2025, 5:55 pm

Story
Sandy is a beautiful mix of fluff.  Part Lab, part Yeti? Who's to say for sure. This gorgeous girl is 80+ pounds of love. As a senior, she has earned a life of leisure. She's looking for a home with plenty of comfy places to nap. Sandy is petrified of fireworks, and storms. She will need anti-anxiety meds. Combining fear with a healthy dose of curiosity which tempts her to explore, we strongly recommend Sandy have a yard with a high fence.  Our girl loves her some food and treats, and being tall has absolutely no problems countersurfing, so she'll need a door or an extra tall gate to keep her out of the kitchen.  Sandy gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home, but she does get growly when there are too many in close proximity.  She came to SAAP with some skin issues, but is all healed and looking for her forever home.April 29, 2025, 8:13 pm

Story
Marie Curie is a beautiful, lanky black colored lab mix that weighs approximately 38lbs. She is looking for a very patient adopter as she is very timid and shy around people. We are not sure if she suffered some abuse and/or neglect. She's gaining more courage and trust in humans and her surroundings daily but this is still a work in progress! For example, when I first got her, she would dart away from me when I approach her to pet her. She acts like she wants to be loved but is nervous to surrender. So she keeps her guard up. She is starting to let me approach her without running to give her head rubs!! It’s not 100% perfect but definitely getting better! When I catch her and put her on the couch with me, she is stiff at first and then will loosen up. Marie is clean and in the crate and working hard on potty training. She is also learning how to be a dog! She is playing with her foster siblings and is very submissive with other dogs and just a genuinely sweet soul. Thus far, she just ignores the resident cat. Marie would do best in a fenced yard as she still needs to work on leash training and more socialization. She can be timid to come back in the house when I am standing at the door so I have to walk away for her to come in. She would also benefit from basic training. Lastly, given her timid nature, Marie would do best with another confident dog in the home. She does better when she can follow the lead of another dog and they can teach her the ropes.  Are you willing to teach Marie what it means to be loved? If so, submit an application. She deserves a loving forever home! In time, I know she will be the best version of herself!       November 28, 2024, 12:01 pm

With a moderate energy level, he’s always up for an adventure but just as happy to curl up beside you when it’s time to relax. Kai is wonderful with kids of all ages and enjoys the company of other dogs, but he’d prefer a home without cats. His ideal family will give him lots of love, daily walks, and a comfy spot to nap. Special note: Takes thyroid medication twice daily (about $25/month) Heidi is a lovable and gentle soul with a heart as golden as her fur. Heidi is house-trained, spayed, up to date on all her vaccinations, heartworm negative, and microchipped. She’s on thyroid medication, which she takes twice a day, but it’s a manageable cost of around $25/month. Story
Old Yeller, is that a new trend? Old stuff made NEW?? Cause I am NOT old, although I am Yeller, a really pretty YELLER COLOR!!! :) I am a Yeller Chesapeake bay retriever/ YELLER lab mix, it is important for my new family to know about the Chesapeake bay breed. We can be very stubborn, smart and independent and I really like to be in charge, so my new family needs to be strong leaders too. I am a handsome bloke, with swirls of yellow and white all through my coat. I am very smart and very sweet. I can from a high kill shelter with no hope- Now I EXUDE hope!! And LOVE!!! I WAS heartworm positive but have already finished the treatment and am NEGATIVE and just stay on prevention for the rest of my life. I am good with other dogs, but really would be best in an only dog home, cause I want all the attention :) I LOVE MY people and I tend to take "control" of my home so have to have a couple of things... 1) STRONG leadership owner, 2) I have to have an owner who will be wiling to not let me meet everyone who visits.. I want to protect my home a little too much... and 3) I have to stay in the San Antonio/TX area so my rescue friends can keep close tabs on me and how i am doing :) I have been running and playing since I am safe, but really am a couch potato. I am a bigger boy and about 65-70#. Look me up, get my number, text or call me OR just APPLY to ADOPT ME!!! I will be waiting by the phone!!! Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX)
