Check out this patriotic little guy! Meet Baxter! If you're searching for a loving new family member, your search ends here. Baxter is a 12-pound, 2-3-year-old Malti Tzu (a Maltese and Shih Tzu mix), and he embodies all the best, sweetest traits of both breeds. Ater a few days in his foster home, Baxter found his voice. Yes he has that Maltese trait. For this reason, Baxter is not suited to apartment life. Baxter was found as a stray in Nashville after someone suspected he’d been hit by a car and brought him to the emergency vet. Thankfully, there were no broken bones> He has now totally healed from a sore back leg. (Hih had X-rays when he was neutered. Everything now looks good.) We wish Baxter could tell us what happened and how he ended up on his own—it’s hard to imagine any family not wanting such a sweet boy. Baxter is both a people-lover and a dog’s dog! He loves to play and would thrive with a young, active canine companion in his forever home. He adores people and always wants to be by your side—be prepared to never be alone again! His leg never slowed him down; he still jumps on the furniture to be with his foster mom whenever steps are available. This young gentleman walks well on a leash and is fully housebroken. He loves going on adventures and rides like a champ in the car—he even prefers the back seat, though he’s happy on a passenger’s lap, too! Baxter is the perfect companion for trips to the park or visits to dog-friendly restaurants and shops. Baxter can entertain himself but must have a doggie companion in his forever home. • Rescue Story: Meet Tonki👋 In April 2025, a group of small dogs—believed to be victims of an illegal breeding operation—were found abandoned together on the streets of South Korea. Tonki was one of them. Now, he’s ready to leave his difficult past behind and begin a new chapter as a beloved member of a loving family. Having learned how to live happily with humans in his foster home, Tonki is patiently waiting for his forever home—where he’ll be cherished, protected, and loved the way he truly deserves. • Personality: Sweet, Friendly, Bright Tonki is a lovable, easygoing pup with a bright, happy energy. He’s incredibly affectionate and loves showing his humans just how much love he has to give! While he may need a little extra time to warm up to adult men, once he does, he becomes a loyal and devoted furry companion. • Affinity with - Dogs: Wonderful with other dogs! Arlo is an adorable 2 1/2-year-old, 10-pound love bug. Once he identifies you as his people, he wants nothing more than to lie around and snuggle with you all day. He loves pets and belly rubs and playing with his ball! Arlo requires frequent brushing and grooming every 4-6 weeks (he is thought to be Maltese or Havanese). He dislikes the heat so we have been keeping his coat shorter for the summer. He is housetrained and has previously slept in a baby-gated area with a crate, but prefers the freedom to move around at night from his dog bed to the couch. Arlo was rescued at the age of 1 1/2 so his prior life is unknown but likely involved some struggles and trauma. As a result, Arlo struggles with anxiety and reactivity, so he currently takes 10 mg of Fluoxetine. The medicine has helped him remain calm and comfortable during the day while we are at work. We do have a dog walker who comes mid-day for company and to get him outside. Arlo loves his family and is extremely protective which results in him being very reactive to any visitors in the home. We have been working with a trainer on a protocol to make him more comfortable with visitors but he continues to need to be secured behind a gate or in a room when visitors enter the home. Arlo is also reactive towards other people and dogs on his walks. He has improved with tolerating people on walks (using training tips like “cookies for lookies”), but he continues to be reactive to other dogs.

Meet Sprout, 5-6 years old This sweet little Maltese weighs around 6 pounds and is super sweet. Sprout was rescued from a puppy mill, along with his brother Cooper, listed below. Sprout is shy when you meet him, which can lead to him being overlooked by many adopters. We know it's due to fear. For this reason, we have him also listed under our Safe Haven Sanctuary, where he will always be safe if he is never adopted. Since his rescue, he is LOVING life! He loves to run around the yard playing and enjoys climbing up to kiss you on your cheek. This little munchkin is used to being around other small dogs in the puppy mill, so we feel he would do best in a household with another small dog. Sprout had a complete dental where most of his teeth were removed. He also had blood work, and he's in excellent health. We look forward to hearing from you! Sweet Star came to CHR a year ago in rough condition at the age of 5 or 6 years old. She lived in a puppy mill, where she was bred to produce puppies for sale. She lived in a small shed with access to the outdoors through a doggie door. Recently, Star was diagnosed with a torn cruciate, so on 6/19 she will have orthopedic surgery to repair the cruciate tear. We’re keeping Star in our Safe Haven Sanctuary while she recovers, but we are still looking for her forever home if the fit is good for you and her. Star’s foster mom describes her as a beam of sunshine. She’s spunky and full of love and gentleness, and she kisses humans and dogs alike. She enjoys walking through a fenced yard to find just the right spot to eliminate. We’re asking her to go to a home with a fenced yard. Star loves to nap by your side. She is like a sponge, absorbing your hugs and kisses daily. One of the biggest challenges with Star is that she will sometimes(1-2 times a week) eliminates on top of dog beds. This could be a marking behavior from being in the puppy mill. Her foster mom picks up the beds before feeding to make sure there are no triggers, like after eating, when she may go eliminate on them or she immediately lets her out for a potty break after eating. Star is also let out every 3 hours during the day for a potty break. At night, she does well without accidents, but she may have accidents for the first few months in any house she goes to, so we recommend diapers for this cutie at night during the beginning of her stay with you. Star does not enjoy being crated, and it's not recommended for a puppy mill survivor..
