Story
A mother and her 13yr old son arrived at the local mall to do a little shopping. As the 13yr old got out of the car Bertha came bounding up to him and nuzzled his hand asking for pets. He reached down and petted her, distracted from finishing getting out of the car. Next thing he knew, Bertha was climbing into the car with him for some much needed air conditioning (it was one of those days that it was REALLY hot). They obviously couldn’t continue their shopping trip, so they got back into the car and drove the dog into town while calling us. The entire car ride Bertha was in the backseat but had her head resting on the shoulder of the 13yr old in the passenger seat in front of her. When we met Bertha we put a leash on her and she willingly came with us. She loaded into the animal control truck like a champ with a little just a tiny bit of help up the ramp. She’s been calm and peaceful in her kennel, wags at the staff as they approach and doesn't have issue with her neighboring canine friends in the kennels next to her. She is pretty good on a leash unless she REALLY needs to go to the bathroom and is in a hurry, or if something scares her and she's getting out of dodge.Because of her size we wouldn't recommend her for a home with really little kids, unless they're familiar with giant breeds that aren't aware of just how large they are.Interested in adopting? Story
Pocono ACCT-A-259475 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Pocono must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH at 10AM. Should Pocono's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Meet Pocono! She came to ACCT Philly on August 24th after being found as a stray and brought in by police. She was shy and unsure when she first arrived, but she has been making wonderful progress and showing more of her sweet personality each day. Pocono is a low-to-medium energy girl who enjoys walks, knows sit and paw, and absolutely loves playing fetch. Once she feels comfortable, she enjoys affection and will happily lean into her favorite people for pets. She has also done well meeting other dogs, showing polite greetings and a willingness to sniff and walk alongside them. Pocono is still a little hesitant in new situations, but she responds well to calm, patient handling and has continued to gain confidence. She would love a home where she can take her time getting comfortable and keep discovering how wonderful life can be. Due to her length of stay, Pocono is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. She allowed me to leash her easily and pulled moderately walking through the kennels. She was very handler oriented. She had a good meet with Mickey and was very polite with introductions, walking along side by side and also taking turns doing butt sniffs. She walked back into the kennels easily but stopped outside of her kennel and did not want to go back in. An ACA was nearby who was petting her and picked her up to put her back in, which she tolerated very well. Pocono is a very sweet and goofy girl. Per staff, playgroup 9/6: Highly steerable. Came into the yard and immediately tried to mount Kiln, who corrected. Staff separated and removed. Per staff 9/6: Low energy. Slight issues returning. Shy but sweet. Good on walk and on leash. Per volunteer 9/5: Love playing fetch. Playful. Per staff 9/5: Pocono knows sit and paw. Per volunteer 9/4: Moderate issues returning to kennel - high value treats and leash pressure. Mildly jumpy. Low energy. Per staff 8/29: I asked an experienced volunteer to get Pocono out, no issues getting out or going back in, leaning into her leg when being pet, tolerant. Met Thor Majestic in a walk along, very interested in sniffing, loose and tolerant. During the meet, the other dog had a male handler; when he leaned forward at the fence and Pocono was on the other side of the fence, Pocono did a small huff, backed up, and moved away, indicating discomfort. Per staff 8/29: Due to behavioral improvement, this dog is being leveled down from Exp Blue to Blue. Making available for adoption too. Per volunteer 8/29: Low-medium energy. A little hesitant walking on kennel floors. Did not want to go back in kennel. Ate treats inside but not outside. Per staff 8/28: Easy to leash, came right to the front. Walked nicely on the leash, no pulling. Yes, I handled the dog. Enjoy the attention. Walked right into kennel and unleashed without issue. Sweet big girl. Does wanna say hi to other dogs walking past. Came up to handler for few pats. Per staff 8/27: Low energy. Mildly shy. Hesitant to come out of kennel. Very good dog to handle. Per staff 8/26: Sniffed, tolerant, moving away on her own. Per staff 8/26: Kennel Presentation: At the front of the kennel with wide/soft eyes, ears to the side and mid nub not moving. Leash Skills: When I went to leash she lowered her head and body. Came out of kennel and pulled mildly on the leash. Zig zagging while outside. Eyes darting. Sociability: Much better than yesterday. Skin no longer crawling. Allowed pets, however did not solicit for more. Gave me a play bow and then jumped straight in the air. Not eating treats outside. She was still looking out into the parking lot, less pacing than yesterday as well. Play: Tossed a rope toy, she caught it and played with it for a few seconds. Dog Interaction: Met Scooby. Tolerant and moved away on her own. Return to Kennel: Went right into kennel and was able to remove leash with hand. Per staff 8/26: Good greetings. Tolerant. Sniffed and got sniffed. Mingled around. Per volunteer 8/25: Low energy. Mild issues getting out of kennel, walking through kennels, and on leash. Super shy. Mostly exit searching in the yard. Eventually came over by my side. Knows sit and will allow all handling if you go slow. Met Lay Lay and opened up. Soft greetings by both. Per staff 8/25: Kennel Presentation: Volunteer got her out of the kennel. Said he has to close the guillotine door due to her being in the back side. Not eating any of the treats. Leash Skills: Pulls hard on the leash. Sociability: Tolerant of pets, however skin was crawling and would flinch with even the slightest of movements. Heavy panting while outside. Exit searching in the large yard. Ate one hot dog and then spit out another hot dog piece. Knows sit. Dog Interaction: Met Laylay. Stiff at fence greetings, followed the fence line. In the yard, able to sniff each other and move away. Stayed near Laylay when she was moving around the yard. Return to Kennel: Volunteer had no issues returning to kennel. Color Level: Exp Blue due to difficulty removing from kennel, not always eating, and exit searching. Recommendations and considerations: Making rescue only for now. Per staff 8/24: Low energy. Very shy girl, but very gentle. Good on leash. Stay around handler when warm up. Per staff 8/24: Friendly, shy, knows sit, down and paw. MEDICAL NOTES: Pocono is currently being treated for an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold." URIs are contagious to other dogs, but not to people or other types of animals. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging an animal. ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week. Please visit www.acctphilly.org/adopt for details. If you are a rescue interested in pulling this animal, please email our lifesaving team, or visit here if you are not currently a rescue partner: https://acctphilly.org/acct-philly-love-local-partnership-program/ Confirmed placement is considered a confirmation of an actual rescue pull. Possible placement, interested parties, and other "TBD" statuses are not considered confirmed and do not indicate an animal is no longer urgent. All animals at ACCT Philly are from Philadelphia, as the only open-intake animal shelter in Philadelphia, we are not able to accept animals from outside of Philadelphia. ACCT Philly's Pennsylvania kennel license number is 08313.
