This big guy is Chewie. He ended up at the Mesquite Animal Shelter after one of our officers picked him up as a stray on 5/28. Chewie is listed as a Newfoundland mix, weighs 81 pounds, and is about 1 1/2 years old. This sweet-tempered working breed from Canada is known for its gentle nature, webbed paws, and thick coats. Often called “gentle giants,” they’re calm, loyal, and highly empathetic, with a reputation for being patient with kids—earning them the nickname “nanny dog.” Chewie is a friendly, tail-wagging delight who loves treats and followed me everywhere, hoping for more. He doesn’t seem to know any commands yet, but he enjoyed roaming around, happy to be out of his kennel and stretching his legs. Alert and observant, he soaked in everything happening around him and was thrilled to get some pets and affection. With his soft fur, sweet face, and loving personality, he deserves a home where he can live indoors as a cherished family member. His thick coat will need regular grooming.
