Story
NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! Meet Birdie! This adorable little nugget was being given away on social media by her owners, who were leaving town the very next day and needed a quick solution. One of our team members saw the post and immediately stepped in to help. Birdie’s past has been unstable—she was originally rescued from a friend who kept her in their garage. After that, she spent the past year living in a long-haul truck and the last four months in a motel. With a new baby on the way and a big move to Greenville, her owners decided not to take her along. While little thought went into finding a safe solution for her, we’re grateful we were able to get her to safety  Now in foster care, Birdie is thriving! She shares her home with a senior pup and a few kitties. While the senior dog isn’t too interested in her, she’s made friends with the cats and enjoys trying to play with them. She’s been a wonderful house guest—fully house-trained, content being crated or in a gated area when left alone, and a sound sleeper through the night. She has no destructive tendencies and settles in easily. The biggest challenge so far has been her diet—she seems to prefer human food, especially eggs and kosher hotdogs! We suspect this was her primary diet before rescue, so transitioning her to a more well-balanced diet is a work in progress. Birdie has a delightful personality—sweet, social, and moderately energetic. She enjoys backyard time, watching birds and squirrels, playing fetch, and zooming around the yard. She would likely do best in a home with another small, playful pup to match her fun-loving spirit. Her foster mom will be working on leash training this week to see how she does on walks. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 4/12/25 "Birdie is full of playful energy and would thrive in a home with another pup buddy to romp around with or a family that’s ready to engage and play with her regularly. She loves her dog bed and her toys, often gathering them up to snuggle with in bed. Whether indoors or out in the yard, she entertains herself easily, happily tossing toys or gazing at birds and squirrels with wide-eyed wonder. Rabbits may get a chase, but mostly, she just loves being outdoors, soaking it all in. Because of her background, Birdie will need a patient and attentive owner to help her work through some food sensitivities. In her previous home, she was only fed human food, which has made her a bit picky. I'ave had some success with salmon-based wet food, and consistency has been key. Birdie is still adjusting to walks. I use a harness when I walk her, but she is a bit hesitant when walking solo—likely due to all the new sights and sounds in a busy neighborhood. She’s led a very sheltered life, coming from living full-time in a truck, so even the size of my house was overwhelming at first. A confident dog buddy would go a long way in helping her feel secure and enjoy her walks more. Birdie is such a special pup, and she’s ready to find a home where she can feel safe, play freely, and finally relax." ****** Birdie is ready to find a forever home where she can finally have the stability, love, and care she deserves. Could that be with you? She will be coming to town on 4/26.  Apply today! Apply for a DOG: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/CDCK/Dog City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is a foster-based rescue in Washington, DC. We do not have a shelter. CDCK has a thorough adoption process to find the best possible fit for each of our dogs and cats (we do not operate under a first-come, first-served model). Upon accepting a new cat or dog into the organization, we provide a basic vet visit that includes necessary vaccinations, disease screenings, deworming, microchips, and spay/neuter for dogs six months and older. We do not provide a comprehensive medical exam before adoption. As a result, sickness, injury, and disability may exist unbeknownst to CDCK. City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is not responsible for payment of any vet care, including known and unknown medical conditions once a cat or dog is adopted from us. Dog specific: Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella vaccines. They are tested for HW, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis. Story
Don’t let the size fool you—Lucy might only be 5 lbs, but she’s got the spirit of a Border Collie who just drank a Red Bull and read The Art of Herding. This 11-week-old mystery pup is (probably?) a Pomeranian mix, but we’re honestly just guessing. Her family tree is more of a tangled shrub with a whole lot of adorable in it.Lucy came from a home with 26 dogs and was rescued from some seriously ick conditions, but she’s thriving in foster care and ready to run your household like a tiny, fluffy supervisor. She’s the kind of pup who sees a group of people standing around and immediately starts organizing them into a tidy circle.Compared to her goofball sister Skye, Lucy is the brains of the operation—clever, observant, and always one paw ahead. She’s been exposed to other puppies, adult dogs, cats, and kids As a small, mischievous puppy, Lucy will need either a securely fenced yard or to be supervised closely while outside—she’s got places to go, sticks to chase, and zero understanding of “boundaries” (physical or otherwise). She’s still working on crate and house training, and she’ll need regular grooming to keep her looking fabulous. She’s full of energy, curiosity, and just the right amount of sass.If you’re looking for a tiny boss to lovingly micromanage your life, Lucy is accepting applications. Bonus points if you’ve got snacks and a strong work ethic. If you’d like to take Lucy home, please fill out an adoption application at this link – https://animalalliesrescue.org/dog-application. The adoption fee is $400 and covers all expenses needed to prepare dogs like this one for their forever homes. By the time you meet them, they’ve already been spayed/neutered (if age-appropriate) and microchipped. They’ve been checked by a veterinarian and are up to date on necessary vaccinations, including Rabies and DHLPP. They have also been tested for heartworm and tick-borne diseases and have started heartworm and flea preventative medication. Some of our dogs have even undergone extensive medical care to ensure they’re ready for a happy, healthy life with you!

Story
Skye is 11 weeks old and already a pro at being cute, mildly chaotic, and mysteriously mutty. We think her mom was an Australian Shepherd/Husky mix (25 lbs) and her dad a Pomeranian/Aussie mix (20 lbs)... but honestly, it’s like someone tossed a bunch of breeds in a blender and hit `cute.` We suspect her previous owners were trying to breed “mini Aussies,” but what they got was “major cuteness.”Skye came from a hoarding situation with 26 dogs and was seized due to less-than-chic living conditions (read: yikes). But don’t worry—she’s left that mess behind and is now living her best puppy life: running in chaotic zoomie circles, chewing on everything that legally can be chewed, and absolutely charming everyone she meets.Currently around 10 lbs, Skye is your typical puppy: wild, curious, cuddly when tired, and in need of a human who’s ready for some serious crate and potty training adventures. She’ll also need regular grooming to keep that fabulous fluff in check. She`s been mingling with puppies, adult dogs, cats, and kids, and has a pretty chill vibe—especially compared to her sister (also with AARF), who is definitely the overachieving hall monitor of the litter.Since she`s still a baby with a love for adventure and zero sense of self-preservation, Skye will need a securely fenced yard or close supervision when outside—she’s small, fast, and occasionally powered by chaos.Skye is the goofball, the sidekick, the nap-on-your-feet type. If you`re looking for a pup who`s equal parts silly and sweet (and don’t mind a little chaos with your cuddles), she might just be your girl.If you’d like to take Skye home, please fill out an adoption application at this link – https://animalalliesrescue.org/dog-application. The adoption fee is $400 and covers all expenses needed to prepare dogs like this one for their forever homes. By the time you meet them, they’ve already been spayed/neutered (if age-appropriate) and microchipped.
