Story
Meet Rhode Island (“Isla”) — the happiest little wrinkle puppy you’ll ever meet! Isla is a precious puppy with wrinkles for days and a personality just as adorable as her squishy face. She also has the coolest coat — mostly black with beautiful chocolate mixed throughout that makes her extra unique. This goofy girl wakes up happy and stays that way all day long. When she wags her tail, her entire back end wiggles right along with it! Isla is the perfect mix of playful and cuddly. She loves other dogs, does great with kids, and is always ready to make a new friend. After playtime, she’s happiest curled up beside her people, soaking up all the snuggles she can get. She’s also a smart puppy who is already doing wonderfully with her basic training — crate training, potty training, and beginner commands are all coming along beautifully. Isla is eager to please and would thrive with a family excited to continue helping her learn and grow. If you’re looking for a funny, affectionate, happy-go-lucky best friend with endless wrinkles and an even bigger heart, Isla may just be your girl

Story
Montana is such a special pup. He had a bit of a rough start in life, and while that's made him cautious about the world, he's already catching up by leaps and bounds. He may need a little bit to warm up to new spaces and people, but he loves people hard--as soon as he decides you're safe, he is all snuggles and (moderate amounts of) kisses. This is an incredibly sensitive boy, and he's very eager to please--the slightest change in tone of voice is enough to redirect him, and we use a cheerful "Oops!" as his "Try again" no-reward marker. His foster parent has only had to use the word "no" once in the time they've been together. That sensitivity is a gift and not something we'd like to fix: his ideal forever home would have people committed to using positive rewards-based training methods and continuing the socialization work we've started, which is helping him to blossom. He's learning fast that car rides don't have to be scary and is making fantastic progress. He was a dreamboat for his first nail trim (nailed it! ha) and we're handling his feet daily so that he stays calm about it. He's finally opened up enough to get short-but-adorable zoomies around the yard, but overall he is remarkably low-energy for a puppy. Montana knows that we sit to say "please," and he dashes into his crate at mealtime and sits politely before his dinner is put down. We are working on "down" and "wait" and a whistle to recall and he is such a quick study. Unlike many timid puppies, he has been just fine around unusual sounds. He is emphatically not a fan of being rained upon, but we watched a lightning show and listened to thunder together with no sign of nerves from him. When a new or loud person comes into the house and Montana feels overwhelmed, he heads to his crate quietly to self-regulate instead of barking--he definitely views the crate as his safe retreat. Speaking of crates: He's had zero accidents in his crate and knows to keep his space clean and is doing *great* with housetraining--like most puppies, he thrives on routine and plenty of opportunities to get it right. With the one caveat that he's still learning to be brave in new spaces and will need patience and understanding on that front, he is a dream to walk on a leash. He has only pulled twice (but pulled hard) when a squirrel darted past us. He is mostly content to mosey along beside his person and has stuck close to his foster when we're out in the yard together, even without a leash and harness on. Montana likes treats but thrives most on engagement and praise. Touch and words of affirmation are his love languages. He lives with two cats and has been just perfect, respectful of their space but not jumpy or reactive if they approach to sniff or snuggle him. We also just had our first play date with a friendly, well-mannered dog and Montana did GREAT and has a new buddy (video available)! Things to be aware of: He snores. Also, deep down, Montana does not believe there should be a reason for his person to go anywhere without him. He WILL follow you to the bathroom. While we need a gentle and understanding forever home for him, we also need one willing to put in the time for training and keep gentle but firm boundaries. To keep his velcro inclinations from blossoming into dependence and separation anxiety, he's getting daily "quiet" time for an hour in a crate with a Kong or a licki mat to keep up the habit of self-soothing and handling alone time well. Montana knows what couches and beds are and adores them. He is a champion snuggler and his happiest place to sleep would be in bed with his people, but in the interest of preparing him for a range of homes, he currently sleeps in his crate--he is used to the routine and settles down after only a brief bit of whining (he is still a puppy, after all). His ideal forever-people would either be familiar with the additional care requirements that shar-peis have (allergies, food sensitivities, skin, ear, and eye care) or be willing to learn about them and practice cooperative care techniques with him. If you'd like to know more, we're happy to direct you to some resources! Shar-peis can also be protective and he is already showing signs of that at his tender age--continued socialization will be important, especially since he is not done growing.

Story
Raisin is ready and eager to learn! She is a sweet puppy and has shown high intelligence! She is food motivated and has learned quickly on how to get her treat. She has been learning how to sit, come, and walk on a leash. It only takes her a few tries to understand your request. She is loves to play with the adult dog in her foster home, as well as with her brother, Squish. Raisin will do best with a family who will set aside some time to stimulate and train so she can show off how smart she is. She has been sleeping well in a crate with her brother. She will need consistent potty breaks of 2-3 hours (she is still a puppy) but she knows not to potty inside if she can help it. She is about to enter her teething phase so limiting her access and keeping so keeping an eye on her so she can be corrected if she starts chewing on something she shouldn't will set her up for success! Overall, she is a dream of a dog as she is eager to love and quick to train!

Story
(DOB 10/31/2025) Due to Jia's young age, she has not been spayed yet. For this reason, we are only considering local placement (within a 1-hour drive time of Wake Forest NC).  Jia is the kind of dog who feels like she was made to be part of a big, happy family. With her gentle nature and easygoing personality, she fits right in and that includes kids, cats, other dogs (even smaller ones). She has a natural understanding of how to be soft and respectful with little ones (both human and furry!), making her a wonderful companion in a busy, love-filled home. Jia NEEDS another playful dog in the home to help her burn energy and continue building her social skills. With her affectionate nature and lively spirit, she’ll do best in an active home ready to keep up with her zest for life and provide plenty of enrichment and playtime. This smart and inquisitive girl is always ready to learn something new. Jia is a quick learner who enjoys figuring things out, and her playful curiosity keeps life fun and engaging. Whether she’s exploring her surroundings, joining in on playtime, or simply watching the world go by, she brings a bright, happy energy wherever she goes. Jia has also shown that she handles new situations like a pro. At adoption events and meet-ups, she’s calm, friendly, and well-mannered around unfamiliar animals and people alike. She takes everything in stride and is especially patient and sweet with young children, happily soaking up attention and affection. So don't wait too long because this girl is an amazing catch! At the end of the day, Jia is all about connection and she loves being around her people, getting pets, and joining in on the fun. If you’re looking for a loving, playful, and adaptable pup who will thrive in a lively household, Jia is ready to be your perfect match. As part of Jia’s $325 adoption fee, she will be spayed, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and current on her monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. In addition to the adoption fee, a $100 spay/neuter deposit and puppy spay/neuter agreement will also be required. The deposit will be returned once the puppy is altered. If you have questions about this sweet girl, you can email: Dogteam@pawsforlifenc.org. If you wish to adopt Jia, you can complete an application online for her under the Adopt a Pet Tab on our website: www.pawsforlifenc.org. ##2642329##
