Toby is a 10 pound, 10-year-old Maltese Shih Tzu mix with a sweet and affectionate personality. He is easy-going and full of love and is looking for his furever home. The thing he loves most is a cuddly blanket on a warm lap. Toby would do best in a house with lots of love and cuddles. He's always wanting to be near his family and loves to stay warm and close. Toby wasn’t initially interested in playing with squeaky balls and toys, though he was intrigued by them when the foster family dog played. It took some time for him to get comfortable in his foster home, but he’s recently started to play a bit with soft toys and gets along well with the small resident dog. Toby will continue to come out of his shell as he gains confidence and trust in his home. What Toby really enjoys is an outdoor adventure, wandering around his foster family’s fenced in yard. He's so fun to watch with his adorable prance. His greatest dream is to catch that squirrel in the backyard, but they're just too dang fast for this little guy. Toby has tried to be a bit of an escape artist so he should be kept on a leash if his yard is not securely fenced in. Speaking of leashes, Toby really enjoys his daily walks with his foster family. He walks very politely on the leash and loves sniffing all the neighborhood smells. Toby’s a great eater and does eat dry food but he prefers food that is softened with water or chicken broth. Toby is a sweet boy that wants to find that perfect home. Here are the requirements for Toby’s new family: - Toby needs a home where people are around most of the day since he can get anxious when left alone. - A calm home with gentle and patient humans would be great for Toby. Toby has a mild collapsing trachea and can occasionally have episodes of coughing when he gets very anxious. Keeping him calm and relaxed helps minimize the episodes. Day to day, Toby does great and has had very few coughing episodes. - Because Toby needs to be in a calm environment, an adults only home would be best. However, a family with children over the age of ten will be considered if they have had experience in gently and respectfully interacting with a small dog. - Toby must wear a harness any time a leash is used. With his collapsing trachea, a harness will avoid further injury to his trachea. Toby always wears a loose collar around the house for his name tag, but whenever a leash is used it’s attached to his harness. - Toby is house trained, but his foster family is still learning his signal to go outside. Right now, he gets taken out every few hours, and aside from a couple of accidents in the house when he first arrived, he’s done all his business outside. Toby needs a family that’s able to bring him outside every few hours. - Toby loves to be near his humans so a family that allows him to sleep in bed at night would be preferred. He sleeps on a soft blanket at the foot of the bed between his foster parents. He loves to come up and get belly rubs and cuddles before going to sleep and in the morning when he wakes up - An ideal home for Toby would likely include another small dog. He gets along well with his foster family’s shih tzu and seems to have gained some confidence with another dog in the house to show him the ropes. Toby being a solo dog is not a dealbreaker, however. - Interested adopters should live within a 40 minute drive from downtown Minneapolis and commit to attending the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. We understand that there are quite a few requirements for Toby’s new family, but Toby is totally worth it, and he is sure to bring lots of love to the perfect home. He's an expert cuddler and can't wait to share all his love with you. Toby will be neutered in early October and also have a full dental, including some extractions. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Toby’s adoption fee is $220.00 plus $19.86 in sales tax for a total of $239.86. Walter may be a little shy and unsure at first, but give him some patience, love, and reassurance, and you’ll get to see his sweet personality blossom. Once he knows he’s safe, this little guy is happiest curled up beside his person, enjoying a cozy nap and simply being close to someone he loves. Walter is kennel trained and does well with other dogs, cats, and kids. He’s a gentle little guy who doesn’t ask for much—just a safe place to land and someone who will love him unconditionally. Just look at that sweet face… you can almost see him hoping that his person is out there. Meet Casanova! 🐾❤️ Casanova is a 7-year-old Shih Tzu with a unique, quirky personality who is learning what it means to be part of a family. Casanova has made wonderful progress in seeking affection. He now comes looking for his foster when he wants attention and will even stand on his back legs and put his paws on her when he wants to be picked up. He loves being held, curling into the nook of your arm, and being brushed. He also greets his foster at the door when she gets home. ❤️ Casanova gets along with other dogs and has recently started playing with Penny Sue, showing a playful side we hadn’t seen before. He has some unique quirks, including walking in circles—a behavior sometimes seen in breeder-release dogs who have spent much of their lives in kennel environments. He is also sensitive to thunder and certain loud or intense sounds, including the ominous music in scary movies. When frightened, he seeks out his foster for comfort and reassurance. ❤️ Casanova is very good about using pee pads indoors and happily goes into his kennel for naps and quiet time. He needs to be picked up and carried outside to potty, but once outside, he does his business. He can go down the deck stairs on his own but sometimes needs help getting back inside. Casanova is making progress with leash walking and will need continued practice. He may not be ready for long walks right away, but this is something his family can work toward. When outside, Casanova can become scared or disoriented if he cannot see his person or the other dogs he is with. Because of this, he will need to be kept on leash whenever he is outside of a securely fenced area. Casanova also has an adventurous streak when it comes to furniture! Despite having stairs available, he prefers to launch himself over the top, so his family will need to help him navigate furniture safely. **Meet Tony! 🤎🤍** Tony is a handsome chocolate and white Shih Tzu who is beginning his new life after being released from a breeding facility. While the world is still a little overwhelming to him, each day brings new opportunities to learn that people can be kind and life can be full of love. Tony is a sweet, gentle boy who is still shy, especially when it comes to being picked up. He does well with the other dogs in his foster home and enjoys having them around, but he's still learning to trust people and settle into the comforts of home. Because everything is so new to him, Tony is **not leash trained** and is currently afraid of the leash. For his safety, he will require a **securely fenced yard that is attached to the home** while he builds confidence. Meet Cody James! 🐾 Cody James is an 8-year-old breeder release Shih Tzu who’s discovering just how wonderful life can be! Every day, his sweet personality shines a little brighter. While he’s still working on potty training and isn’t leash trained yet, Cody James is making wonderful progress. He’ll need a home with a securely fenced, above-ground yard where he can safely explore and continue building his confidence. Although he’s naturally a bit shy around new people, Cody James has come a long way in foster care. He now seeks out affection from his foster mom, happily comes to sit by her feet, and is learning that people can be pretty amazing. Cody James gets along well with other dogs and politely ignores the resident cat. Every now and then, you’ll even catch him watching TV—and if something catches his eye, he may just have a few opinions to share with the characters on the screen! 📺🐶 The best part about Cody James is his incredible potential. Garth knows the commands “come” and “go potty!” Although, listening and following through are still a work in progress. He’s a curious little guy who loves going on walks and sniffing everything he can find. When he encounters something he isn’t quite sure about, he may jump and bark at it until he realizes there’s nothing to worry about. Garth enjoys playing independently and loves chewing on his toys and bones. He also likes to know where his people are and prefers to be able to see you and stay nearby. He’ll eat just about anything he can find—bunny poop, grass, acorns… you name it! He’s such a little vacuum cleaner, so his foster has to keep a close eye on him! He does well in his crate, but if he hears you nearby,  he may start barking to let you know he’d like to come out. The good news is that he usually settles down pretty quickly. We’ve also learned that Garth benefits from designated quiet time. He’s still learning how to fully settle himself, but with some structure and downtime, he does very well. This little guy is sweet, silly, curious, and absolutely full of personality. He may still be working on his manners and confidence, but he has so much love to give—and he’s going to make someone very happy! ❤️ Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses.
