Prim. That's my now name. Foster mama says it's because the first people's I lived with called me Princess and there are like 2,220,976 other doggies in rescue named that already and she didn't want anybody to be confused about who I am. Also, because I kinda knew my then name already. Close enough. I am a shih tzu puppy. My birthday is March 12th. I am not as "prim" as my new to me name suggests. I'm a girl, sure, but I'm not afraid to get out into nature (the backyard) and find a few stick or A-corns to chew on. Foster mama says the A-corns are for the tree kittens. Something about they hide them for the winters. What's a "winters"? Anyway, I come with a free AAA membership for life. Cause I'm Affectionate, Attentive and Adorable. I give endless kisses and love lap nap time. Car rides are great for those. If you are ready for a shadow, that's me. I'll follow you ANYWHERE! Oh and I'm super polite with other doggies my size. Foster mama says a little too polite sometimes. My perpetual smile is my mostest endearing feature. It's contagious. You already knew that though. Oh and my fur is luxurious and soft. So shiny. I should be in a shampoo commercial. Also, I hardly shed. I love that for me. And you. Mustard is a sweet older gentleman who believes life is best enjoyed at a slower pace. This calm little guy is pretty much a professional couch potato—give him a comfy spot to curl up and he’s perfectly content! Mustard is visually impaired and needs daily eye drops for dry eye, but he gets around and enjoys life just fine. He does best with a calm routine and gentle handling, as fast movements can make him nervous. He is good with other dogs, especially when they respect his slower pace and personal space. Mustard is pee-pad trained and will also potty outside when taken out on a leash. He hasn’t quite learned how to let you know when he needs to go outside yet, so his new family will need to keep him on a consistent routine. Mustard isn’t looking for a busy, action-packed life. He’s looking for a soft couch, a peaceful home, and someone who will love and spoil him through his golden years. This adorable Shih Tzu/Dachshund mix is as sweet as they come and has a quiet, loving nature that makes her easy to adore. One of the cutest things about Coco is the way she walks—she has a little bunny-hop style that is guaranteed to make you smile. Coco is happiest simply being near her people. She loves companionship, whether it’s from humans or other dogs, and is content to quietly follow you from room to room throughout the day. She enjoys cuddling, relaxing nearby, and keeping an eye on her favorite people. While she can be a little shy when first meeting new people, it doesn’t take long for her to realize she’s safe. Once she does, she becomes incredibly trusting and affectionate. Coco gets along wonderfully with all dog-friendly dogs and would enjoy having a canine companion. However, she does not require another dog as long as her people are home frequently and able to provide the companionship she loves. This sweet girl enjoys soft treats, cozy places to nap, and having a comfortable spot where she can watch for her people. Her favorite setup is her kennel with the door left open or a soft blanket-filled box near the doorway where she can keep an eye on everything while waiting for her family to return. As part of her daily routine, coco receives eye drops in the vending and 1/2 tablet of Benadryl twice a day with a little canned food. She’s very cooperative and does well with this. Coco isn’t looking for excitement or adventure—she’s looking for love. She would thrive in a home where she can be included in daily life, receive plenty of affection, and spend her days close to the people she loves most. Meet Layla! 💕 This adorable 11-lb Shih Tzu is a little girl with a BIG personality! Layla has opinions! She loves to “talk” to her people Because of her vocal personality, she wouldn’t be the best fit for apartment living. Her favorite things include her beloved Lamby stuffed toy, her people, and her food (of course!), She enjoys being close to her humans. Layla is good with other dogs, though she may become reactive when dogs are running or playing. A home with a calm, low-key dog may be a good fit, with separation during high-energy play times as needed. She does chase cats. Layla is still learning to feel comfortable with handling, including being moved or placed in her kennel. She will need a patient adopter willing to work with her on learning cues and building positive associations with these activities. My coat needs regular brushing at home and ongoing professional grooming to keep me comfortable and prevent painful matting. My future family should plan for the time and cost of grooming appointments every 8–12 weeks, or more often as recommended by a groomer for my coat.

Toby is a 10 pound, 10-year-old Maltese Shih Tzu mix with a sweet and affectionate personality. He is easy-going and full of love and is looking for his furever home. The thing he loves most is a cuddly blanket on a warm lap. Toby would do best in a house with lots of love and cuddles. He's always wanting to be near his family and loves to stay warm and close. Toby wasn’t initially interested in playing with squeaky balls and toys, though he was intrigued by them when the foster family dog played. It took some time for him to get comfortable in his foster home, but he’s recently started to play a bit with soft toys and gets along well with the small resident dog. Toby will continue to come out of his shell as he gains confidence and trust in his home. What Toby really enjoys is an outdoor adventure, wandering around his foster family’s fenced in yard. He's so fun to watch with his adorable prance. His greatest dream is to catch that squirrel in the backyard, but they're just too dang fast for this little guy. Toby has tried to be a bit of an escape artist so he should be kept on a leash if his yard is not securely fenced in. Speaking of leashes, Toby really enjoys his daily walks with his foster family. He walks very politely on the leash and loves sniffing all the neighborhood smells. Toby’s a great eater and does eat dry food but he prefers food that is softened with water or chicken broth. Toby is a sweet boy that wants to find that perfect home. Here are the requirements for Toby’s new family: - Toby needs a home where people are around most of the day since he can get anxious when left alone. - A calm home with gentle and patient humans would be great for Toby. Toby has a mild collapsing trachea and can occasionally have episodes of coughing when he gets very anxious. Keeping him calm and relaxed helps minimize the episodes. Day to day, Toby does great and has had very few coughing episodes. - Because Toby needs to be in a calm environment, an adults only home would be best. However, a family with children over the age of ten will be considered if they have had experience in gently and respectfully interacting with a small dog. - Toby must wear a harness any time a leash is used. With his collapsing trachea, a harness will avoid further injury to his trachea. Toby always wears a loose collar around the house for his name tag, but whenever a leash is used it’s attached to his harness. - Toby is house trained, but his foster family is still learning his signal to go outside. Right now, he gets taken out every few hours, and aside from a couple of accidents in the house when he first arrived, he’s done all his business outside. Toby needs a family that’s able to bring him outside every few hours. - Toby loves to be near his humans so a family that allows him to sleep in bed at night would be preferred. He sleeps on a soft blanket at the foot of the bed between his foster parents. He loves to come up and get belly rubs and cuddles before going to sleep and in the morning when he wakes up - An ideal home for Toby would likely include another small dog. He gets along well with his foster family’s shih tzu and seems to have gained some confidence with another dog in the house to show him the ropes. Toby being a solo dog is not a dealbreaker, however. - Interested adopters should live within a 40 minute drive from downtown Minneapolis and commit to attending the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. We understand that there are quite a few requirements for Toby’s new family, but Toby is totally worth it, and he is sure to bring lots of love to the perfect home. He's an expert cuddler and can't wait to share all his love with you. Toby will be neutered in early October and also have a full dental, including some extractions. Tessa is such a rambunctious sweetie! She absolutely adores doing everything right next to you. Although she is quite nervous when she first gets into new places, with a little patience and lots of love, she settles in and her true spirit comes out in full force. Tessa, a full Shih Tzu, is just over 1 year old and weighs 14.6 pounds. She loves to play fetch with her squeaky ball and her lamby is her emotional support stuffie. She has almost mastered potty training, although consistency is absolutely key for her. She was raised to eliminate on potty pads inside, but her foster parents are working on getting her to love the outdoors and understand that’s where she should be going potty. At night, she sleeps wonderfully in her kennel with little fuss, likely because she is constantly moving during the day! A gorgeous white and brown, she is a bit afraid of the grooming razors but couldn’t care less about getting her nails trimmed. Her foster parnets are helping her learn some commands, and she has almost mastered 'sit'. Tessa loves other small dogs and she would likely thrive in a home with another small, younger dog who can match her energy, but also continue to give her confidence! Although a full Shih Tzu, she has some herding inclination and can occasionally nip at your ankles. A firm 'no' and redirection have been working beautifully for this. We have not yet learned how she does with children, although she may do well with older children. Her new home should have these requirements: 1. Ability and time to provide appropriate energy outlets (walks, lots of playing fetch in a fenced in backyard, a young small dog to play with, etc). 2. Ability to provide lots of companionship - she has lots of energy, and likes interaction with her people. She will play alone but she likes to do it when near you. 3. Owners willing and able to continue her training – enrollment in a puppy training class is strongly encouraged. 4. A home with or without another small dog 5. A home with children over the age of ten who have demonstrated how to respectfully and appropriately interact with a small dog will be considered. 6. A home that is within 45 miles of Coon Rapids, MN 7. Commitment to attend our Rescue Reunion in September each year with Tessa.
