Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.February 17, 2024, 12:19 am

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Coco is an 11 year old, male, Shih Tzu mix who acts like he is 5 years old. He weighs 15 pounds. He is energetic and playful and has a real zest for life. He was surrendered to the rescue after his owner had health issues and could no longer care for him. It appears Coco was loved and well cared for until the last year, when his owner’s health seriously declined and Coco was very neglected. Coco came into the rescue, not having not been groomed for over a year and needed veterinary care. After Coco received the care and consistency he needed, his foster parents have found that he loves to snuggle, enjoys his walks, food and toys. He is making up for the last year, experiencing the good life in his foster home after being neglected for so long. He really enjoys the company of his people, but also is okay with some alone time hanging out in his kennel. He feels secure in his kennel and goes there as his “safe” spot if the door is left open and he can go in and out as he pleases. He also prefers to sleep at night in his kennel. Coco enjoys car rides and is a great, calm traveling companion. The best home for Coco will be: - Coco is a very active dog and needs an owner who will enthusiastically engage and play with him, and can be home most of the day. Even though Coco is 11 years old, he has lots of energy and likes his walks and going outside on a daily, regular basis. This is a must for him to keep him happy and healthy. - He is accepting of another small dog in the family, but would be fine as an only dog. Coco is rather protective of his toys and food and this should be taken into consideration if another dog is in the home. - Coco’s new family will need to be patient in understanding Coco’s previous neglect situation, comfort him and help him acclimate to his new surroundings. He will need to re-learn, with his owners’ reassurance, that he can trust his owners to provide food and toys without him having to guard or protect them. - Coco would probably okay with kids that are respectful and who have had experience with small dogs. A family with children over the age of ten will be considered. - Live within 45 miles of Lakeville, MN and agree to attend the annual rescue reunion held each year in September. Coco is neutered, has had a dental, and is current on vaccinations and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $170.00 plus sales tax of $14.49 for a total of $184.49. To meet Coco, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Petco Southtown Center in Bloomington, MN.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He gets along with his foster siblings so a small companion dog would be fine.. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a plus.t. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. Petey’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total cost of $293.02. To meet Petey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at PETCO in Southtown Center in Bloomington.

Story
Hi! My name is McGruff and I am from a shelter in Oklahoma! From McGruff: Single white male seeking long term committed relationship. I have beautiful expressive brown eyes and curly blond hair. I love to snuggle. I will keep you warm all four seasons. I enjoy walks... really ANYTHING to be with you! I will protect you from squirrels and strangers. From the foster: McGruff is a sweet boy who wants to be with his person at all times. So much so, he has separation anxiety. He is doing well with his current medications but in the past has been destructive when left alone. He does well in his crate so it is important that when he is left that he is put in his crate so he isn't destructive. It would be best that his person is mainly home (retired, work from home) He has decided squirrels are the enemy, the furry beasts do love to torment him... (they know he is on a tether and stay just beyond his reach). He gets along fine with the other dogs in the house. He will share dog beds and lap space. No shared walls for this guy. At times he will sing the song of his people. (squirrels, rabbits, walkers bring a need to sound the alarm...) He is getting better at calming when guests arrive and does have medication that he can take prior to known stressful situations. He is a sweetie and just wants to be loved and to be with his person. Are you ready to be his everything? Medical Information: Since my arrival at Secondhand Hounds I've been seen at the SHH Veterinary Center and my medical team addressed a few things my adopter should know about! At my first exam, the Vet noticed I needed dental surgery, which was performed on 8/23/23. I had 7 teeth extracted, but I recovered well and my adopter should monitor oral health with my primary care vet in the future. My adopter should also monitor my knees as it was noted that I have grade 1 Medial Patellar Luxation on both knees (rear legs) that can be controlled or supported with joint supplements, however this is something that should be monitored by my adopter with my primary care vet in the future as well. There were a few masses noted, one on my neck and one on my scrotum. The mass on my neck was drained, determined to be benign and no surgical intervention was required. The mass on my scrotum was excised, submitted to a pathologist for testing and it was determined to be a low grade mast cell tumor. The SHH Vet says removal with wide enough margins like I had will most likely be curative. My foster has been working with me on separation anxiety and I have done well on a daily anxiety treatment called Fluoxetine. This medication may be needed life long depending on my needs in my new home. I'm sure my foster mom would be happy to talk more about this with a potential adopter!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Hello! I’m Aletha, a gorgeous albeit skittish adult female Shih Tzu. Sure, I’m frightened of pretty much everything except foster mom but once I get comfortable, I will show off my affectionately loving & playful side! In fact, foster mom says that I am “the sweetest little girl in the world!” No, seriously…you can ask her yourself when you come meet me! My favorite activities include exploring; saying “hello” to strangers outside; sleeping in bed with mom; and emptying out the toy box to play with my stuffed squeaky toys. I am ok with cats, calm kids, and other dogs and I haven’t had any accidents in the house since being with foster mom (YAY me). I could use more leash practice and I currently have the luxury of a fenced yard, so I hope to have one at my new home too! I am a very smart girl who knows what “come”, “outside”, and “go potty” mean and although I’m ok with the kennel/crate, I’m such a good girl that foster mom doesn’t feel I need it. That said, I don’t like it when she leaves me, so I may bark a bit, but the neighbor told her that I’m getting better about that! LOL!! Anyway, I love foster mom very much, but my dream is a fur-ever home. All I need is a calm, quiet environment with a patient, unconditionally loving person who promises to NEVER give up on me…like YOU! I am an incredibly sweet girl who is more than worth it, and I promise I will love you with my entire heart and soul! Love, Aletha *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared.  Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption.  This will be at the adopters expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a    particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit.  Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.     ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. Your donation will help us buy dog food and pay for medical costs.
