Story
Chewie is approximately 18 months old, hypo-allergenic, LOVES to walk. Chewie is an obedient, loving, companion dog. He's smart and desires to please, and is very patient with dogs his own size. We have another dog who is 8 years old that has medical issues. Chewie needs supervision/training for interactions with larger dogs. He gave chase to our outdoor cats when he first arrived, but now he just sniffs them and walks past. He has had some exposure to 2 year old, 9 year old, and 14 year old boys with no problems. It is with great sadness, I feel I need to re-home Chewie due to a death in the family, and our older dog's medical issues are requiring substantial care (though stable). Chewie needs continued training for separation anxiety, but a bark collar and Prozac have given him much relief. Chewie is a sweet friend who is sure to melt your heart as he snuggles you!

Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Charlie is a 13-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 9 pounds. He has beautiful curly white and brown fur. Charlie’s owner died and a family friend cared for him for a while, but was eventually surrendered to our rescue due to the family having 3 large dogs who intimidated and overpowered him. Charlie has no teeth therefore he eats small kibble or moist dog food and soft treats. He has some hearing loss and gets startled easily if touched from behind. Charlie is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He spends his day sleeping near his foster family while they work at home. Charlie shows no interest in playing with toys. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. He is house trained but needs to be let out every few hours. His foster parents make sure to let him out before leaving the house and frequently throughout the day. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night but would love to sleep in his people’s bed if given the opportunity. Charlie enjoys looking out the patio window, scouting out invading birds and squirrels on the deck. He doesn’t bark much when his foster family is around but gets very excited when his foster family returns home. When the weather is warm, he likes to sit out on the deck with his foster family. He walks well on the leash and loves to go to the park. Charlie has had frequent ear infections in the past and his adopters must clean his ears once a week to prevent infection. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are respectful, would be okay. Charlie has no teeth, so he eats small kibble or moist dog food and soft treats. He has some hearing loss and gets startled easily if touched from behind. He would be okay with another small dog in the house, and may rely on the other dog if his hearing continues to diminish. These are the requirements for Charlie’s new family: • A stay-at-home family, or a family where someone is home most of the day. Older children would be okay. • A fenced yard is a plus but not a requirement. He will explore the outdoors but should not be left alone outside. • A family that is willing to clean his ears once a week. • A family who lives within 30 miles of the Twin Cities. While Charlie is 13 years old, he will still bring many years of love and companionship to a family who will open their hearts to a senior dog. We hope his new family will plan to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Charlie is neutered, current on vaccinations, and on heartworm and flea & tick preventative medication. Charlie’s adoption fee is $75.00 plus $6.39 sales tax for a total cost of $81.39. To meet Charlie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at PETCO in Southtown Center in Bloomington.

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. What isn't there to love about Lola!   Lola is a puppy who wants to play, chase, wrestle and run! When she is tired she will happily cuddle on your lap. She LOVES all things food, squeaky toys and to be outside. She doesn't like to be left alone for long periods of time. Lola is very playful and good with children. She loves other dogs, we don't know about cats. She will bark a lot to vocalize and indicate she wants your attention or to play. If Lola seems like a perfect for you, you may fill out our application and someone will be in touch soon. Story
I am Noel. I am from Kentucky If you're looking for a hiking partner, look away! Noel's idea of an active life is going around the yard a couple times, followed by a nap. With a clean bill of health, this girl is ready to be someone's spoiled, pampered princess. And just like the Princess in the Princess and the Pea, this girl is sensitive. No kids and no rough handling for her. This girl needs an experienced owner who is willing to build trust, respect her boundaries and help her learn to feel safe and secure in higher stress situations like the vet. Noel currently lives with a cat and another small dog. She has little interest in either of them, but can get snappy with the other dog if he gets too close to her food. She can manage the three steps at the back door, but a full staircase from the first floor to the upstairs is a bit much from her, as is jumping up on the furniture. She'll happily fuss to let you know she wants up and is fine being carried up and down. Because of her sensitivity around rough hands, Noel is only available to homes with no children. While you'll need a little patience to win her full trust, this girl will reward you by making curling up at your side her favorite hobby. From the Vet: Hi! I'm Noel a spunky southern gal finally ready to be looking for my furever home! I came into rescue a few months ago and needed to have several medical issues addressed before I could commit to the search for a home. I came having already had a recent mammary mass removal surgery when I was still in Kentucky. The biopsy from that surgery was inconclusive so I was scheduled for a second mass removal surgery at which time it was determined that the masses were a non-cancerous benign growth. My future family should monitor for any future masses and consult a primary care vet if new masses present. I also had a dental procedure where 17 teeth were extracted. At home dental care is recommended to maintain oral health as much as possible. On my first exam, grade 2/4 MPL's (medial luxating patellas) were noted, however I am walking fine and not experiencing any lameness or pain. Currently, surgical intervention will not be needed. Joint supplements and other supportive care in addition to exercise and lean diet could be considered helpful. Hope to settle into a quiet, happy home in my later years!

Story
I need a temp foster from May 23- 28! Please CLICK HERE to sign up to foster! Hi! I'm Snowball! I'm from Kentucky! From her foster: Snowball, called Lou Gary in this house is a funny little guy. Lou has the best side eye. He likes to be near his people. He likes to sleep on your feet, hang out on the couch with you, lay in your lap. He likes to sniff outdoors. He's getting used to a leash, he likes to go his own way. I'm not sure I see him walking miles everyday - he just doesn't seem to love walks for the act of walking - maybe he is your backpack/stroller dog for distance? He loves to sniff - short sniff walks where he is in charge. He does well on car rides so I think he'd be a good travel buddy. He marks in the house and this is managed with belly bands right now. His first tail wags were to my resident pups. I think he'd like another dog companion.
