In addition to the following profile for these dogs, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Meet Sophie and Tucker, a bonded Shih Tzu pair who are great companions. They came into rescue when their owner died unexpectedly. They must be adopted together. Sophie, the female, is 9 years old and weigh 10 pounds and Tucker, the male, is 3 years old and weighs 19 pounds. They have luscious tri-color coats with reddish brown, black, and beige colors. They are calm and obedient dogs who are very easy to care for. They are housetrained and love to receive a treat for going potty outdoors. After going out one last time before bed at night, they sleep undisturbed with their foster mom until she awakens and takes them out to potty first thing in the morning. They ride beautifully in the car and walk well on a leash. Both like to cuddle with their people and follow you all over the house and especially love when people and dogs come to visit. They are both very docile and cooperative will let you clean their faces with a wet cloth and not object. Sophie is a gentle, low energy lady. She wants nothing more than to sit on your lap and get petted! She is very friendly and loves everyone. Sometimes she can be a bit scared of loud noises, but she finds comfort in her people. She does enjoy walks, but tends to only want to go a few blocks before wanting to head home. Sophie takes a couple of medications for allergies, which she will need for the rest of her life. She does not generally play with toys, Tucker does. Tucker is a playful snuggle boy! He loves to play with his people, and his big sister, Sophie. He still has the last of his puppy energy and loves going for walks. Tucker always keeps an eye on Sophie, checks on her, and naps next to her wherever she decides to nap. He protects and grooms her and is upset if you take her away without him. Tucker may get a bit nosey and pokes into things. He really likes certain types of toys and seems to have a time of day when he gets really playful. Requirements for applicants interested in Sophie and Tucker include: • A family with or without children, but children must be older than 10 years. Prefer adopters who are home most of the day. No older senior applicants will be considered due to Tucker’s young age. • Must adopt both dogs together (bonded pair). • Willing to take them outdoors for walks regularly every day, must be physically able to care for a young dog such as Tucker, and can handle two dogs. • A home within 30 miles of Eden Prairie, MN. • Willing to continue with treatment plan for Sophie’s allergies. • Must commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. Sophie and Tucker are spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. They will have a dental before they are adopted. The adoption fee for Sophie is $120.00 plus $9.03 sales tax for a total of $129.03. Tucker’s adoption fee is $320.00 plus $24.08 sales tax for a total of $344.08. The total amount to adopt both dogs is $473.11. The adoption fees reflect a $100.00 discount for adopting both dogs together. To meet Sophie and Tucker, please complete an adoption application on the STRMN website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see them and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Rockford or Chicago, IL areas and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Nora is a c urious, cuddly, sometimes apprehensive girl. She is gentle with kids (around infant now toddler) but should be around adults that protect Nora from grabby kids. She loves to be next to her human(s) and does not like to to be away from them for too long. She will let you know and will bark if she gets left behind on a couch or bed. She doesn't love her paws touched or being crated, as she spent too much time locked up before she came into rescue.  Nora will chew on toys for a little bit. She has poor vision, but knows how to go up the stairs. She is normal but sometimes does not see clearly the treat you are holding in front of her. She will also struggle at times knowing where sounds are coming from as she hears them but does not always know what direction the sound is coming from. That means if you call her name she takes off in a different direction, but if you keep calling her name she can catch the direction you are in. She would do best with a family that can be home with her a lot. She wants to snuggle and be close. So far she has not taken to walking on a leash. She stays fairly close when going outside to potty, she does not like to explore the outdoors very much. She potties and is ready to go inside. A yard with a small area gated to keep her in would be best so she can do her business and come back inside. As of now she is working on potty training, she will potty outside if she is taken out routinely. She needs human supervision to make sure she potties.        Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 18, 2023, 8:49 pm

Story
5 year old Zoe came into rescue in February.  She is very ready to find her forever home!     She loves to play with her fosters dogs, and has a mellow temperament except when she gets disturbed from her lazy slumber. Zoe’s likes- belly rubs, back scratches and snuggles Zoe’s dislikes- loud noises, quick movements and sleeping by herself. She is potty trained and unsure of her harness, but that’s a must! One thing she asks is that she finds a home only with older kids who are respectful to her.  She's been through a lot in her little life and wants to know she's safe, loved and always taken care of.  We know she's good with dogs, she just hasn't been around cats, so that's an unknown. Are you her forever?    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 18, 2023, 8:49 pm

Story
Hi! My name is McGruff and I am from a shelter in Oklahoma! From McGruff: Single white male seeking long term committed relationship. I have beautiful expressive brown eyes and curly blond hair. I love to snuggle. I will keep you warm all four seasons. I enjoy walks... really ANYTHING to be with you! I will protect you from squirrels and strangers. From the foster: McGruff is a sweet boy who wants to be with his person at all times. So much so, he has separation anxiety. He is doing well with his current medications but in the past has been destructive when left alone. He does well in his crate so it is important that when he is left that he is put in his crate so he isn't destructive. It would be best that his person is mainly home (retired, work from home) He has decided squirrels are the enemy, the furry beasts do love to torment him... (they know he is on a tether and stay just beyond his reach). He gets along fine with the other dogs in the house. He will share dog beds and lap space. No shared walls for this guy. At times he will sing the song of his people. (squirrels, rabbits, walkers bring a need to sound the alarm...) He is getting better at calming when guests arrive and does have medication that he can take prior to known stressful situations. He is a sweetie and just wants to be loved and to be with his person. Are you ready to be his everything? Medical Information: Since my arrival at Secondhand Hounds I've been seen at the SHH Veterinary Center and my medical team addressed a few things my adopter should know about! At my first exam, the Vet noticed I needed dental surgery, which was performed on 8/23/23. I had 7 teeth extracted, but I recovered well and my adopter should monitor oral health with my primary care vet in the future. My adopter should also monitor my knees as it was noted that I have grade 1 Medial Patellar Luxation on both knees (rear legs) that can be controlled or supported with joint supplements, however this is something that should be monitored by my adopter with my primary care vet in the future as well. There were a few masses noted, one on my neck and one on my scrotum. The mass on my neck was drained, determined to be benign and no surgical intervention was required. The mass on my scrotum was excised, submitted to a pathologist for testing and it was determined to be a low grade mast cell tumor. The SHH Vet says removal with wide enough margins like I had will most likely be curative. My foster has been working with me on separation anxiety and I have done well on a daily anxiety treatment called Fluoxetine. This medication may be needed life long depending on my needs in my new home. I'm sure my foster mom would be happy to talk more about this with a potential adopter!
